Why 2025 Was a Great Time to Start No Man’s Sky

Four 2025 additions gave No Man’s Sky new entry points for explorers, builders, collectors, and players who want to crew a customizable ship.

No Man’s Sky had several strong new entry points in 2025: expanded planetary exploration, more involved settlement management, collectible fossil-hunting, and customizable ships built for multiplayer crews. That makes 2025 a persuasive year to begin—not because there is one ideal way to play, but because the updates broadened the kinds of play the game supports. These are historical additions, not a claim that they are the newest updates in October 2026.

What made 2025 a good time to start?

The clearest case is variety. Hello Games’ 2025 updates added new reasons to explore, build, collect, and play with friends. The features will appeal differently depending on what you want from a space sandbox, and official feature announcements do not establish that every player will enjoy them.

  • Explore: Worlds Part II added new planetary environments and terrain changes.
  • Build and manage: Beacon expanded settlement ownership and management.
  • Collect and curate: Hello Games’ year-end recap lists bone-hunting and fossil design among the year’s additions.
  • Design and crew a ship: Voyagers introduced customizable Corvette-class ships and multiplayer missions.

Worlds Part II made exploration more varied

Released January 29, 2025, update 5.50 added purple-class star systems and new planetary characteristics, including gas giants and water worlds. Hello Games also described revised terrain generation, deeper oceans, aquatic life, and new hazards and equipment for deep-water exploration. The official Worlds Part II notes specify that the new terrain settings apply to planets in purple systems; terrain in existing systems was not regenerated. That distinction matters if you had already built or explored in older systems: the update did not overwrite their terrain.

Beacon gave settlement builders more to oversee

Announced June 4, 2025, Beacon expanded settlement play with the ability to oversee multiple settlements, settlement upgrades, new building types, and more management decisions. For a new player, it offers a more substantial building-and-management path than simply establishing a base. Hello Games’ Beacon announcement also said the update was releasing that day.

Relics added a collecting and curation angle

Hello Games’ 2025 recap includes bone-hunting and fossil design among the year’s additions. That supports another way to approach the game: seek out finds and treat them as collectibles to display, rather than focusing only on travel or construction. The recap is the cited basis for this summary; it does not provide enough detail here to describe a full Relics feature set.

Voyagers made ship design a co-op hook

In August 2025, Voyagers introduced Corvette-class ships assembled from modules, which players can inhabit with friends. Hello Games’ Voyagers announcement and official release log describe multi-crew ships, multiplayer missions, and a ship-building expedition. It is a compelling draw if you like designing a shared vehicle or exploring with a crew; it does not mean the whole game is multiplayer-focused.

Choose a platform based on your hardware and edition

Hello Games’ official release log lists PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox Game Pass. A separate Nintendo Switch 2 edition arrived with the console on June 5, 2025. In its Beacon announcement, Hello Games said that the Switch 2 edition added full multiplayer and cross-save/cross-play, and that existing Switch owners could upgrade through a free eShop upgrade pack. Those are announcement-era details; check the current store listing for regional availability, upgrade terms, and the edition that fits your hardware. The platform list does not establish identical features across every version.

There is no sourced player-count, sales, review-score, or adoption figure that proves 2025 was objectively the best year to start. The argument is about the breadth of the additions: as Hello Games founder Sean Murray put it in the Beacon announcement, “From day one, new players are benefiting from 9 years of updates, just tons of huge additions.” That is the developer’s characterization, not independent evaluation.

So, should you start?

If you are drawn to exploration, settlement management, collecting, or building a ship with friends, 2025 brought a concrete new feature for each of those interests. That makes it a strong retrospective answer to “When was a good time to get into No Man’s Sky?” It is not evidence that 2025 remains the best or most current starting point in October 2026; later updates and current platform details should be checked against Hello Games’ release log and the store for your region.
