4J Studios’ move toward original games is a gradual shift in emphasis, not a departure from its development roots. The studio has spent years building and adapting games for other companies; in a 2023 interview, co-founder Chris van der Kuyl said 4J increasingly wanted to make and publish games based on its own ideas. Manic Mechanics is a clear example: a party game about repairing vehicles under pressure, designed to welcome occasional players while offering tougher challenges for veterans.
Why 4J Studios is pursuing original games
4J’s history includes substantial development work for other companies, including ports and technical work. Van der Kuyl described that experience as a foundation for choosing projects and partners, rather than a reason to keep doing volume work-for-hire indefinitely. “We’d rather make original games with the amazing team that we have,” he told GamesBeat in 2023. The ambition is to put the studio’s own ideas at the center of more projects while drawing on the expertise it built through earlier work. GamesBeat’s 2023 interview also reported historical figures attributed to 4J: 16 published titles, 17 mash-up games, seven mini games, 30 skin packs, 11 texture packs, 11 international awards, and 150 million players. Those are figures presented in the interview, not independently audited totals.
What makes Manic Mechanics a 4J original
Manic Mechanics turns vehicle repair into a cooperative race against the clock. Players work through garage levels, completing repairs while hazards and time pressure make coordination increasingly chaotic. 4J’s official game page describes six neighborhoods and 30 garage levels, and says players can team up with as many as three fellow mechanics. It lists Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC via Steam as platforms; because the page is undated, check the current store listings for up-to-date availability.
Designed for groups with different experience levels
Van der Kuyl said the team wanted the gameplay to be accessible to people who do not play games often, while retaining difficult challenges and extra discoveries for experienced players. That design aim connects Manic Mechanics to 4J’s stated “games for everyone” ethos: players can share the basic experience without every member of a group needing the same level of skill.

Original development sits alongside publishing
4J’s interest in its own games has not meant limiting its work to internally developed projects. In a publishing announcement, the studio named Skye Tales, developed by Puny Astronaut, as its first published title. The announcement also said future releases would include both 4J originals and games from studios in which it had invested through Chroma Ventures. It described a six-figure investment in Puny Astronaut in 2018, though the announcement page does not state a publication date. 4J’s publishing announcement characterizes Skye Tales as an accessible adventure about a friendly dragon.
The distinction matters: making an original game and publishing an outside studio’s game are different roles. 4J’s strategy described in 2023 encompassed both, rather than replacing one with the other.

What changed when Curve Games took over publishing
In October 2024, 4J announced that Curve Games would take over publishing Skye Tales and Manic Mechanics. The stated scope included distribution, promotion, and opportunities to reach international audiences. 4J co-founder and chair Chris van der Kuyl said Curve was positioned to help bring the titles to a wider audience. The partnership announcement identifies Curve as publisher; it does not say Curve developed or originated either game. The change in publishing arrangement is compatible with 4J’s original-game ambitions: a studio can create a game and work with a separate publisher to market and distribute it.

The clearest change is creative emphasis: 4J wants more room to make games around its own concepts, using experience gained from development and porting work. Its publishing activity also leaves room for projects by external studios. The available announcements explain the direction and roles, but do not provide comparable budgets, sales figures, or evidence that original development performs better commercially than work-for-hire in 4J’s case.
