“When it’s ready” was 4A Games’ answer about the next mainline Metro game in a February 15, 2024 anniversary post—not a release date. PLAION’s current catalog now lists METRO 2039 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, but the cited listing gives no release year. Those are separate facts: the old quote does not establish when the listed game will launch.
Where “when it’s ready” came from
On February 15, 2024, the official Metro account marked the fifth anniversary of Metro Exodus and said the next mainline game from 4A Games would arrive “When it’s ready.” The post did not announce a date or release window. Insider Gaming reported the post and its wording; PC Gamer also covered the announcement.

The context was a fan asking about a year. The reported reply was “definitely in the future,” which likewise did not give a launch window. The post also said Metro Exodus had sold over 10 million copies, according to the official Metro account in 2024; it did not provide an audit method or sales breakdown.
What the current METRO 2039 listing confirms
PLAION’s Metro support catalog lists METRO 2039 and names PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S as platforms. The cited listing excerpt does not state a release year. It therefore confirms the title and listed platforms, not a launch date or window.

The 2024 “when it’s ready” post and the present catalog entry should not be combined into a claim that the game is launching in a particular year. The anniversary post did not name a year; the catalog excerpt does not supply one.
METRO 2039 and Metro Awakening are different games
The February 2024 post discussed two projects: the next mainline game from 4A Games and Metro Awakening, a VR title from Vertigo Games. Metro Awakening is not the next mainline 4A Games entry. The distinction matters when interpreting older coverage of the franchise’s upcoming games.

What to play while waiting
If you want an explicitly labeled series catch-up option, PLAION confirms a physical Metro Exodus Complete Edition for Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PlayStation 5. It includes the base game and both expansions, The Two Colonels and Sam’s Story. This is an earlier game, not METRO 2039; availability may depend on platform and region. The official Metro product page lists the edition and included content.
