A padlock on a PlayStation Plus game does not, by itself, mean your subscription expired. PlayStation says it can indicate a license issue, so first identify which account and offer gave you access; then check sharing and restore licenses if the entitlement is still valid.
Why a PS Plus game can be locked
“PS Plus game” can mean several different things: a game you bought, a monthly game you claimed, a title available through the Extra or Premium catalog, or a game supplied by another account on the console. Each has different access rules. Installed game files do not prove that the account currently has a license.

PlayStation Support notes that a padlock is not necessarily related to subscription expiration. Treat it as a symptom, then check the entitlement that applies to this particular game.

If you bought or redeemed the game
Sign in to the PlayStation account that made the purchase or claimed the game, then check its transaction history. If the game belongs to another account on the console, confirm that account’s sharing settings instead.

If you claimed it as a monthly game
Check that the account that claimed the game has an active PlayStation Plus membership. A monthly game is different from a game that is merely in the Extra or Premium catalog.
If it came from the game catalog
Check the live catalog for your region to make sure the title is still available, and verify that your plan includes the relevant catalog. PlayStation says Extra includes the game catalog; Premium includes the game and classics catalogs. Specific access and streaming benefits vary by plan and title, and catalog availability and local plan terms can change.

If another account supplies access
Verify that the account that owns or claimed the game is on the console and that sharing is set up on that account’s console. Sharing does not transfer ownership or let another account claim Plus games for itself.

Check console sharing when another account owns the game
PlayStation allows selected benefits to be shared from the owner’s console: on PS5, through Console Sharing and Offline Play; on PS4, by activating the console as the owner’s primary PS4. The PS5 setting can be enabled on one PS5 at a time for an account. Check PlayStation’s benefit-sharing guide for which benefits are shareable.
Turn on sharing on PS5
- Sign in to the account that owns or claimed the game.
- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Select the option to enable Console Sharing and Offline Play if it is not already enabled. PlayStation’s PS5 setup guide explains the setting and its limits.
Activate the owner’s primary PS4
- Sign in to the account that owns or claimed the game.
- Open Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PS4.
- Choose Activate if the console is not already activated for that account.
Sharing provides access to selected benefits on the owner’s console; it does not make the other account the owner of the game.

Restore licenses on the console
If the account still has the right to access the game, restore licenses. PlayStation says this process does not affect user data.
- PS5: Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
- PS4: Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses > Restore.
PlayStation Support provides these steps in its license restoration guide. Restoring licenses cannot renew an expired entitlement or restore a catalog title that is no longer available to your account.

If the game remains locked
- Recheck the account and entitlement. Confirm the purchase or claim appears in the owner account’s transaction history. For monthly games, check membership status; for catalog games, confirm the title is currently listed and your plan grants access.
- Check sharing again. Make sure the game-owning account has sharing enabled on the relevant PS5 or has activated the PS4 as its primary console.
- Check PlayStation Network status and console software. Restart the console as appropriate and make sure its system software is current.
- Follow the console-specific troubleshooting steps. PlayStation’s game-start troubleshooting guide includes further checks, including database-rebuild steps where advised.
- Contact PlayStation Support if it is still locked. Include the displayed error code, what you tried and what happened, plus a screenshot or video if possible.
Choose the fix based on the cause
| What the game came from | What to verify first | Next step if access should still be valid |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase or claimed game | The owner account and transaction history | Restore licenses; continue console troubleshooting if needed |
| Monthly Plus game | The claiming account and active membership | Restore licenses after confirming the entitlement |
| Extra or Premium catalog | Current catalog listing and a plan that includes the title | Restore licenses if it remains eligible |
| Another account’s game | That account’s entitlement and sharing setup | Enable sharing on its PS5 or activate its primary PS4 |
