A jailbroken PS5 still does not gain Sony’s native ability to run PlayStation 2 discs. Sony’s PS5 manual states that PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 software cannot be played from a disc. Jailbreaking only creates a way to run unofficial software; it does not change the PS5 operating system into a PS2-compatible console.
A compatible jailbreak can run PS5SX2, a PS2 emulator. A report published October 11, 2026 says newer PS5SX2 builds can read physical PS2 DVDs, but that feature depends on the build, firmware, setup and game. PS2 titles released on CD remain blocked by the PS5 optical drive. If your disc fails, first determine whether you are seeing normal lack of native support, an emulator setup problem, a media-format limitation or a separate drive fault.

What the PS5 is actually refusing to do
The PS5 optical drive can recognize several kinds of DVD media, including DVD-ROM, DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW on the CFI-21XX series covered by Sony’s instruction manual. That specification describes the physical media the drive can read; it does not mean the console can interpret the software stored on every DVD.
Sony makes the distinction explicit: “PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and PlayStation®3 format software cannot be played from a disc.” A PS2 game disc may therefore be detected as a disc, appear briefly in the interface or be rejected without a useful error, while the console is operating normally.

Sony’s official backward-compatibility information concerns the overwhelming majority of PS4 games on PS5. It does not promise PS2 disc compatibility. Reading a DVD, supporting PS4 software and understanding the PS2 disc format are three different capabilities.
Jailbreak, emulator and disc support are separate layers
What a jailbreak changes
A jailbreak can allow unsigned or unofficial applications to run on particular PS5 firmware versions. It does not add a Sony-made PS2 runtime, replace the PS5 disc menu or make every jailbreakable firmware interchangeable. The exact firmware and console model matter because unofficial projects generally test only selected combinations.
What PS5SX2 provides
PS5SX2 is a native PS5 port of the PCSX2 emulator for jailbroken consoles. Emulation recreates the PS2 hardware in software; it is not the same as native backwards compatibility. The project documentation lists a jailbroken PS5, a helper payload with kstuff, ShadowMountPlus, a PS2 BIOS and game input among the requirements. The project does not include BIOS files, games or keys.

What the recent physical-disc feature changes
Tom’s Hardware reported on October 11, 2026 that PS5SX2 had added physical PS2 game-disc support for DVD media. The report describes use with both the PS5’s built-in drive and external USB optical drives. This is an emulator-project feature, not a Sony-supported PS5 function.

The project’s main setup material still describes image-based game input, so do not assume that every build containing PS5SX2 has the same disc implementation. Check the instructions and release notes for the exact build installed on your console. A physical-disc option can also have different requirements from loading an ISO or another image.
Why a PS2 disc can fail even when PS5SX2 is installed

DVD versus CD: the physical-media limit
The reported PS5SX2 disc feature applies to PS2 games on DVD. Tom’s Hardware specifically reports that CD-based PS2 games cannot be read by the PS5 optical drive. That limitation remains even if the emulator itself could otherwise emulate the title.
PS2 software was distributed on both DVD and CD. A blue or otherwise CD-based PS2 disc is therefore a different case from a standard DVD game. Do not diagnose a failed CD as proof that the entire emulator is broken, and do not expect a USB optical drive automatically to solve the issue: the current report describes USB-drive support for the physical-disc feature, but exact configuration requirements belong to the active PS5SX2 documentation.
How to diagnose the failure
1. Identify the route you are using
Put the disc in the normal PS5 interface and note what happens. If you are not launching PS5SX2 or another emulator, the result is expected: Sony does not support starting PS2 software from the standard disc interface.
2. Record the disc format
Determine whether the title is DVD-based or CD-based. A DVD title is the only physical format covered by the October 2026 report. If the title is CD-based, stop treating it as a general PS5SX2 configuration failure; the optical drive is the limiting component.

3. Check the installed PS5SX2 build
Confirm that your build actually includes the physical-disc feature. The feature is recent, and the project’s general documentation may still present image files as the normal input. Read the instructions for that specific release rather than relying on a video or guide made for an earlier build.
4. Verify the emulator prerequisites
Confirm all of the project-listed components:
- A PS5 jailbreak compatible with your console and firmware.
- The required helper payload with kstuff.
- ShadowMountPlus, where required by the project’s setup.
- A user-supplied PS2 BIOS.
- A supported game input, either the physical DVD feature or an accepted image format such as ISO, CHD, CSO or ZSO.
A missing BIOS or game input can prevent a title from appearing even when the PS5 drive itself is functioning.
5. Check firmware and console coverage
PS5SX2 documents particular tested firmware versions and consoles and says that firmware not listed has not been tried. Treat an unlisted combination as unknown. Do not infer that a jailbreak working for one firmware makes PS5SX2 reliable on another, and avoid updating or downgrading solely on the assumption that an untested version will work.
6. Test the same title by an image route, if available
If you have a lawful, correctly prepared image that the project supports, compare its behavior with the physical DVD. If the image launches but the DVD does not, concentrate on physical-disc support, drive access, disc condition and title compatibility. If neither works, revisit the BIOS, payload, mount component, file placement and firmware combination.
7. Compare with the project’s test information
The project reported that 108 games had been started in an early September 2026 test set. It explicitly says the list is not a compatibility guarantee, and behavior can change between builds. A game missing from that list is not proven impossible; a listed game is not promised to work on your console, firmware or disc.

When the PS5 drive itself may be faulty
A PS2 disc failing alone does not prove a defective drive, because native PS2 playback is unsupported and CD-based PS2 media has the reported optical limitation. Suspect a separate hardware or media problem only when supported formats fail as well.
Sony’s general troubleshooting sequence is:
- Orient the disc according to the illustration for your PS5 model. On a horizontal console, the printed side faces the direction shown in Sony’s guide; a vertical installation has a different orientation.
- Clean the disc with a soft, lint-free cloth, wiping from the center toward the edge rather than in circles.
- Try another supported PS5 or PS4 game disc, Blu-ray or DVD.
- Remember that Sony says PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs; those are not valid tests of PS2 support.
- If multiple supported discs fail, use Sony’s Safe Mode disc-troubleshooting steps and service guidance.
These steps can establish whether the console has a broader reading problem. They cannot add PS2 software support to the standard PS5 interface and cannot overcome the PS2-CD limitation described for the emulator route.

If your priority is playing an original DVD with minimal software configuration, original PS2 hardware is the straightforward native route. If you already maintain a compatible jailbroken PS5 and want higher-resolution emulation, PS5SX2 can be practical, provided the specific title and media format fit the current build.

Does a jailbroken PS5 automatically play PS2 discs?

Why does a PS2 DVD appear in the PS5 menu but not start?
Disc detection is not software compatibility. The standard PS5 interface recognizes physical media without having a PS2 runtime capable of launching the game.
Will an external USB DVD drive fix a failed disc?

Without those details, “the disc does not work” cannot distinguish native incompatibility, an unsupported CD, an untested firmware combination, a setup error or a defective drive.
