A PS5 cannot play PlayStation 2 game software from a disc. Sony explicitly excludes PlayStation 2 format software from disc playback on PS5, so a PS2 game that fails to start is not evidence by itself that the disc is dirty or the console’s drive is broken. Cleaning it, changing settings, or updating the console will not make it playable as a PS2 game.
The confusing part is that many PS2 games use DVD-shaped media, while some PS5 models can play supported DVDs. Those are separate questions: the PS5 may recognize a physical DVD format for video or other supported purposes without being able to run the PlayStation 2 software recorded on it.

Why a PS5 will not play a PS2 game disc
The issue is software compatibility, not simply the disc’s physical shape or storage medium. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PS5 safety guide states: “PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and PlayStation®3 format software cannot be played from a disc.” That exclusion applies even if the PS2 game disc is in good condition and the console can read other kinds of discs.

DVD support means the console can play certain DVD formats for supported purposes; it does not mean the PS5 can run every kind of software recorded on a DVD. The disc’s format as a game and the physical media format are separate compatibility questions.

In practical terms, a PS5 can be able to read a commercial movie DVD yet reject a PS2 game DVD. That behavior is expected rather than proof that the optical pickup is failing. The same applies to a PS2 disc that looks immaculate, has no fingerprints, and worked in an original PS2.
So if the console displays a read error or does not launch a PS2 game, there is no PS5 setting or disc-care procedure that turns that PS2 disc into supported PS5 software. Use troubleshooting only to diagnose problems with discs the PS5 is designed to support.
First check whether your PS5 has a disc drive
Before testing any physical disc, identify the console configuration. A PS5 Digital Edition without an attached compatible drive has no physical disc-reading capability in that configuration. The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition does not support disc-based games or media. Sony lists later Digital Edition model groups that can use a separately sold compatible disc drive; the exact model and drive guidance should be checked against Sony’s instructions for the relevant market.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAn optional compatible drive can provide access to supported physical formats on eligible models. It does not add PS2 game compatibility. Installing a drive to a compatible Digital Edition therefore solves only the absence of a reader. It cannot make PlayStation, PlayStation 2, or PlayStation 3 disc software supported.
If you are unsure which model you own, check the model information printed on the console or its packaging and compare it with Sony’s model-specific disc-drive instructions. Do not assume every Digital Edition uses the same drive or that a drive sold for one model group fits another. Availability and exact requirements can differ by market.
What to do if the disc is a PS2 game
- Confirm the disc is PS2-format software. Check the label, case, and title. If it is a PlayStation 2 game disc, the PS5’s stated compatibility limit is the explanation for why it will not play.
- Stop troubleshooting that disc as a drive fault. Cleaning, reinserting, changing console settings, or installing an update cannot override the unsupported software format. Repeated insertion can add scratches without changing the result.
- Check options for the specific game. If you want to play that title, check whether an officially available current release exists for PS5 or another supported platform you can use. Availability depends on the title and region; not every PS2 game has a digital release or remaster.
A PS2 disc that fails on PS5 may still be readable by hardware that supports PS2 discs. That is a different compatibility situation from playing it on a PS5: the failure on PS5 is expected even when the disc is undamaged. Conversely, if the same PS5 also fails to read several supported PS5 or PS4 games, Blu-ray discs, or DVDs, investigate the drive separately.

How to troubleshoot a supported game, Blu-ray, or DVD
These checks apply to media that the particular PS5 model supports. Work through them one at a time, reinserting the disc after each change. If the disc is a PS2 game, skip this procedure: the steps cannot make it compatible.
Recommended Free Tools
- Check that the console has a drive. If you have a Digital Edition, verify whether your exact model group supports an attached compatible drive and whether one is installed. Use Sony’s model-specific instructions for the drive and your region. A drive that is not attached, not compatible, or not correctly installed cannot read any physical media.
- Check the disc’s orientation. Sony’s troubleshooting illustration shows the labeled side facing left when a PS5 is vertical as the disc is inserted. If your console is positioned differently, follow the orientation shown for that position in Sony’s instructions. Do not force a disc that meets resistance.
- Inspect and gently clean the disc. Look for fingerprints, smudges, dust, and scratches. If cleaning is appropriate, wipe gently with a soft, clean cloth, taking care not to leave new fingerprints when handling the disc. Wipe from the center toward the edge rather than scrubbing aggressively in circles. A suitable cloth you already own is enough; cleaning does not repair scratches or change format compatibility.
- Test a different supported disc. Try another supported game, Blu-ray, or DVD. This comparison helps distinguish a problem limited to one disc from a problem affecting the console’s disc-reading function. Use known-good supported media, not another PS2 game, as the comparison.
- Check the disc type and condition. A supported category can still have restrictions. For example, Sony says unfinalized DVDs cannot be played, and it warns that recording quality and the characteristics of the recording device can affect playback.
- Contact PlayStation support or use PlayStation Repairs if supported discs keep failing. Sony’s error-code guidance directs users to support or repairs when its checks do not resolve the problem. Have the console model, the types of discs tested, and the exact on-screen message ready.
Do not begin with a factory reset when the only disc that fails is a PS2 game. A reset cannot change the format exclusion. Sony’s troubleshooting materials include further software-recovery steps for persistent problems with supported media, but those are a separate escalation path; understand the data consequences from Sony’s current Safe Mode documentation before taking any recovery action.
Use the results to distinguish an expected limitation from a fault
| What happens | What it suggests | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A PS2 game fails, but other supported discs work | Expected PS2 software incompatibility on PS5 | Stop treating the PS2 disc as a drive problem. Check whether the specific title has another officially available way to play it. |
| One supported disc fails, but others work | A disc-specific format, condition, or recording issue is plausible | Inspect and gently clean it, then check that its format is supported and, for a DVD, that it has been finalized if applicable. |
| Several supported discs fail | A console read-function or drive issue is plausible | Confirm the console model and disc orientation, then follow Sony’s support or repair route. |
| A Digital Edition has no attached drive | That configuration cannot read physical discs | Check the exact model group and Sony’s compatible-drive options; an eligible drive supports only media the PS5 otherwise supports. |
| A burned DVD or audio CD fails | The media type is excluded, not necessarily defective hardware | Use a supported commercial game, Blu-ray, or DVD for testing instead. |
These outcomes are diagnostic clues, not a guarantee of a particular hardware fault. In particular, one unsupported PS2 game cannot establish that the console’s drive is defective. Compare only against discs the model is meant to read.
Disc formats and physical media that can still cause problems
Sony lists supported PS5-format Ultra HD Blu-ray and compatible PS4-format Blu-ray, as well as Ultra HD Blu-ray, BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE with a version exception, DVD-ROM, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, and AVCHD among supported media in its safety guide. Sony’s media-playback guidance gives further detail. The precise formats and availability can depend on model and region, so consult the local PlayStation support information for your console rather than treating one regional list as universal.
Support for a broad media category does not mean every disc within it will work. Sony says PS5 cannot play burned discs or audio CDs. Its safety guide also says unfinalized DVDs cannot be played and notes that scratches, dust, recording quality, and the characteristics of the recording device can prevent some discs from playing.
- Do not use an 8 cm disc or a disc that is not circular.
- Do not insert cracked, deformed, or repaired discs.
- Do not use discs with paper or stickers attached.
- For a DVD that should be supported, check whether it was finalized; an unfinalized DVD will not play.
- Do not assume a home-recorded disc is equivalent to a pressed commercial disc. Recording quality and finalization can affect whether supported DVD media is recognized.
These cautions concern supported physical media and safe use of the drive. They do not create exceptions for PS2 games: a pristine, finalized PS2 DVD remains PS2-format software that the PS5 cannot play from disc.

What not to try for a PS2 disc
- Do not buy a cleaning product expecting it to add compatibility. A soft, clean cloth can remove surface smudges from a disc; it cannot enable PS2 software on PS5 or repair damage. A specialty brand is not required.
- Do not use scratch-repair claims as a solution. Even a successfully polished disc would remain unsupported PS2 software on PS5, and aggressive repair methods can damage media.
- Do not change settings or reset the console to make the disc launch. The limitation is the software format, not a setting that needs to be enabled.
- Do not infer a broken drive from this one test. Use a supported game or other supported disc to assess whether the drive reads media it is designed to handle.
- Do not assume every PS2 title has a newer release. Check the exact game and your region; release availability varies.
- Do not force an unfamiliar disc into the slot. Follow the orientation for your console position and avoid cracked, deformed, non-circular, 8 cm, sticker-covered, or repaired discs.
Why the DVD wording causes so much confusion
“DVD” describes a physical storage medium, while “PlayStation 2 format software” describes the software platform and how the console is expected to interpret it. Two discs can have the same diameter and both use DVD technology while requiring completely different software support. A PS5’s ability to play a listed DVD video format therefore says nothing about its ability to execute PS2 game software.
The same logic explains why inserting a PS2 game into a PS5 with a working drive may produce a message that sounds like a reading failure. The console can detect that something is present without supporting the software on it. Testing another supported disc is the useful next step; repeatedly cleaning the PS2 disc is not.
Frequently asked questions
Can a PS5 play PS2 games on disc?
No. Sony states that PlayStation 2 format software cannot be played from a disc on PS5.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can a PS5 play a PS2 game that is stored on a DVD?
No. DVD media support and PS2 game-software support are separate. A PS2 game remains unsupported even when its physical disc is DVD-shaped.
Why does my PS5 say the disc cannot be read?
If the disc is a PS2 game, the compatibility exclusion explains the result. If it is supported media, check orientation, condition, format, and whether other supported discs work.
Will cleaning a PS2 disc make it work?
Cleaning with a soft, clean cloth may remove fingerprints or dust, but it cannot make unsupported PS2 software playable on PS5.

Does a PS5 Digital Edition support PS2 discs if I buy the add-on drive?
An eligible compatible drive adds physical-disc access for formats the PS5 supports. It does not add PlayStation 2 game compatibility. The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition does not support disc-based games or media.

Not for a PS2 disc. A reset cannot override Sony’s compatibility limit. Consider broader recovery or repair steps only when supported media also fails, and review the data consequences in Sony’s Safe Mode documentation.
What if one supported DVD fails but another works?
Inspect the disc, clean it gently, and check its format and finalization. Scratches, dust, recording quality, or an unfinalized DVD can prevent playback.
What if several supported discs fail?

Is there a product I need to buy?
No special product is required for the basic cleaning check. Sony recommends a soft, clean cloth. A separately sold compatible drive may be relevant to an eligible Digital Edition that lacks a drive, but it still will not run PS2 discs.

Why will a PS5 read a DVD movie but not a PS2 DVD?
The console’s supported DVD media formats do not include running PS2 game software. Physical media type and software-platform compatibility are separate.
Could my PS2 disc be damaged?
It could have scratches or dirt, but that is not the reason it fails specifically on PS5: PS2 game software is unsupported from disc. Test supported media to evaluate the drive.
Will an add-on drive let a Digital Edition play PS2 discs?
No. A compatible drive adds access to supported physical formats only. It does not add PS2 software compatibility.

When should I contact Sony?
Contact PlayStation support or use PlayStation Repairs when multiple supported games or movies fail after checking orientation and condition. A single PS2-disc failure is expected behavior.
The Bottom Line
A PS5 cannot run PlayStation 2 software from a disc, even when the disc is a clean DVD and the console plays other DVDs. Confirm your model has a compatible drive, then use orientation, gentle cleaning, and comparison tests only with supported media. If several supported discs fail, follow Sony’s support or repair process; an add-on drive or factory reset will not make PS2 discs compatible.
