Why Aloy Looks Different in Horizon Forbidden West—and What the Remaster Changed

Yes—Aloy’s face and character model look different in Horizon Forbidden West than in the original Horizon Zero Dawn. Guerrilla says the change comes from higher-fidelity character technology: denser geometry, more accurate facial and body capture, additional skeletal joints, and finer surface and material detail. It is a technical upgrade built on the same character design, not a story explanation that Aloy suddenly became a different person.

There is also a separate update in Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. Guerrilla’s art director said that version brought over Aloy’s Forbidden West model, then adjusted character lighting, skin tones and hair shaders. That is why the remaster can look much closer to the sequel than the original 2017 game does.

The short answer: her model was rebuilt at higher fidelity

Guerrilla did change Aloy’s in-game appearance between the original Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West. The studio described the sequel as an improvement in character quality and fidelity while retaining the design foundation established in the first game.

Lead character artist Bastien Ramisse identified two especially visible advances: more accurate facial and body capture, and a careful increase in polygon density. More polygons allow the artists to describe subtler contours instead of approximating a face with broad shapes. Better capture gives those shapes more believable proportions and movement. The result is a face that can appear softer, more detailed and more expressive even when the character’s underlying design remains recognizable.

Guerrilla also added finer surface information, including details such as peach fuzz, smoother contour transitions and more convincing material response on skin, hair and clothing. The team increased the number of skeletal joints used for facial animation, allowing expressions to deform the model in more nuanced ways than a simpler rig can.

“The most noticeable differences and improvements for Aloy in terms of technology is the push of facial and body capture accuracy, allowing more realistic shapes and surface details on characters as well as the careful increase of polygon density to capture handmade and used outfits.”

— Bastien Ramisse, Lead Character Artist at Guerrilla, quoted in a 2021 PlayStation Blog developer article

Those changes affect both close-up cinematics and ordinary gameplay. They are not one isolated alteration to Aloy’s nose, jaw or eyes; they are the combined effect of geometry, animation, capture, shading and lighting.

Why does Aloy look different in Forbidden West?

Denser geometry changes the silhouette

A 3D character is built from polygons. A low-detail model has to represent a cheek, eyelid or jawline with relatively large planes. A denser model can curve those areas more gradually and preserve small transitions around the mouth, eyes and nose. That changes the way light travels across the face and can make the same broad design read as more natural.

Ramisse said the PS5 generation enabled Guerrilla to push this fidelity further. The increase was not limited to Aloy’s head. The studio also used additional detail to represent handmade and worn clothing, so the character model, outfit and facial appearance could all benefit from the newer asset pipeline.

Facial and body capture became more accurate

Capture data supplies artists and animators with realistic movement and proportions. Guerrilla called the improvement in facial and body capture accuracy one of the most noticeable technological differences for Aloy. Better capture does not mean that a real person’s face was copied wholesale into the game. It means the production could preserve more credible shapes and expressions when Aloy speaks, reacts or moves.

  • Unravel startling mysteries - uncover the secret behind Earth's imminent collapse and unlock a hidden chapter in the ancient past. one that will change Aloy forever.

The distinction matters because screenshots often focus on a neutral face, while players see Aloy across dialogue, combat, climbing and cinematic scenes. A model with more accurate capture can look different from its predecessor even when both versions use the same concept design and character identity.

More facial joints produce subtler expressions

Facial animation depends on a rig: a network of controls and joints that deforms the model. Guerrilla increased the number of skeletal joints used for facial work in Forbidden West. More joints give animators finer control over eyelids, cheeks, lips and other areas, reducing the rigid or “pulled” look that can result from a simpler setup.

This is one reason a comparison can make Aloy seem to have a different face shape. Expression changes alter the apparent width of the eyes, the tension around the mouth and the outline of the cheeks. The change is in the quality of the movement and deformation, not evidence that the story has replaced her with another character.

Surface detail, hair and materials affect perception

Skin is not a flat color, and hair is not a solid helmet. Fine surface detail and more advanced shaders determine how highlights, shadows and translucency appear. Peach fuzz, smoother contours and more carefully authored materials can make skin look less like a painted texture and more like a physical surface.

Lighting then determines which of those details are visible. A warm scene, a cool outdoor scene and a brightly lit dialogue shot can make the same model appear to have a different complexion or facial structure. For that reason, a useful comparison must identify not only the game but also the scene and lighting conditions.

Did Aloy’s face change because she aged?

Not on the evidence Guerrilla provided. Horizon Forbidden West begins six months after Horizon Zero Dawn. Narrative director Ben McCaw described the sequel this way: “It starts with the same Aloy that players fell in love with during Horizon Zero Dawn.”

A six-month interval is too short to explain the substantial visual difference by ordinary aging alone, and Guerrilla’s own explanation centers on production technology. Aloy does have new experiences in the sequel, but the studio presented her as the same established character carried into a higher-fidelity game.

That does not mean every pixel was frozen. Character artists can revise proportions, textures, hair, clothing and facial-animation behavior while preserving the recognizable design. The evidence supports that kind of asset refinement, not a claim that the story gives Aloy a new face.

Original Zero Dawn, Forbidden West and Zero Dawn Remastered compared

These three versions should be treated as separate visual targets. The first is the original game’s launch-era model; the second is the sequel’s rebuilt, higher-fidelity implementation; the third is a remaster that reportedly imports the sequel model into the earlier game.

Version Character-model geometry and detail Capture and facial expression Lighting, skin and hair treatment Story position
Horizon Zero Dawn (original 2017 release) Original character assets and the fidelity level of the first game’s production. Original facial and body-capture implementation; fewer later-generation refinements. Original character-lighting and shader setup. The starting point for Aloy’s story.
Horizon Forbidden West Denser polygons, finer contours and additional surface detail built for the sequel’s technology. More accurate facial and body capture, plus more skeletal joints for expression. More detailed materials and rendering intended to show skin, hair and clothing with greater fidelity. Begins six months after Zero Dawn with the same Aloy.
Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered Guerrilla art director Jan-Bart van Beek said Aloy’s Forbidden West model was brought into the remaster. Uses the imported model as part of the remaster’s visual update; the cited statement does not provide a separate joint count. Character lighting was reworked to match Forbidden West and improve skin tones; hair shaders were improved. Returns to the earlier game’s story while using a newer visual presentation.

The table explains why a screenshot from the remaster can look dramatically unlike the 2017 original even though both depict the same story period. The remaster is not showing Aloy several years older; it is using a later model and rendering treatment.

What changed in the Zero Dawn remaster?

The remaster is a distinct change from the sequel upgrade. In a report published by GamesRadar about a September 25, 2024 public post, Guerrilla co-studio director and art director Jan-Bart van Beek wrote:

“We brought over Aloy’s model fromForbidden west. We also reworked the character lighting to match the look of HFW and improve skin tones. Hair shaders are also improved.”

— Jan-Bart van Beek, quoted by GamesRadar from his public post

The wording contains the original post’s “fromForbidden west” spelling. The important distinction is the model transfer: the remaster reportedly uses the sequel’s Aloy model rather than merely applying a higher-resolution texture to the original asset.

Lighting and shaders matter almost as much as mesh geometry when judging a face. Reworked character lighting can change how warm or cool skin appears, how strongly facial planes are defined and how eyes or hair catch highlights. Improved hair shaders can alter the apparent hairstyle volume and the framing around Aloy’s face. These updates explain why the remaster may resemble Forbidden West even when you are playing the earlier game’s missions.

How to compare Aloy’s face without mixing versions

If you want to settle a visual comparison for yourself, use a controlled method rather than matching random screenshots.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the exact release. Label each image as the original Zero Dawn, Forbidden West or Zero Dawn Remastered. A remaster screenshot is not evidence of what the 2017 model looked like.
  2. Match the scene and camera angle. Compare similar dialogue or gameplay shots. A three-quarter view and a frontal close-up emphasize different facial contours.
  3. Check the expression. More facial joints allow different eyelid, cheek and mouth movement. A neutral frame should not be compared with a smile, grimace or mid-sentence pose.
  4. Separate model detail from lighting. Look for geometry and surface features, then examine skin tone, hair highlights and shadow direction. Lighting changes can make an unchanged contour appear substantially different.
  5. Note the outfit and hair presentation. Guerrilla’s fidelity work covered clothing and materials as well as the face. Hair, headgear and costume framing can alter the apparent proportions of the head.
  6. Keep the timeline separate from the asset version. The sequel’s six-month story interval does not explain the model upgrade, and the remaster’s use of the sequel model does not move the story forward.

What the available statements do—and do not—establish

They do establish a deliberate technical upgrade

  • Guerrilla described improved facial and body capture accuracy for Aloy.
  • The sequel used greater polygon density and finer surface detail.
  • The facial rig gained more skeletal joints for credible expressions.
  • Forbidden West retained the design foundation established in Zero Dawn.
  • The remaster was reported to use the Forbidden West model, with revised lighting, skin-tone treatment and hair shaders.

They do not establish a single real-life face model

The cited material describes a team process involving character artists, capture and rendering technology. It does not establish that one real person alone supplied Aloy’s final in-game appearance. Treating the result as the work of a sole face model would go beyond what these statements support.

There is no published player-reaction statistic to quote

No named percentage, survey or other measured statistic about how many players noticed or preferred the change is established in the cited material. The defensible conclusion comes from Guerrilla’s technical explanation and the documented six-month story interval, not from an invented reaction count.

Why screenshots can make the difference look larger

Side-by-side images are useful, but they can exaggerate or disguise changes when they come from different rendering conditions. Resolution, camera distance, facial pose, scene lighting and hair or costume framing all influence what the eye reads as “the face.” The remaster adds another variable because it reportedly combines the sequel model with revised lighting and shaders.

A fair comparison therefore asks four questions: which version produced the image, how detailed is the model, how was the face animated, and how are lighting and materials presenting it? Those four axes separate a genuine asset change from an apparent difference caused by the shot.

Bottom line

Aloy was not recast as a different character between the two games. Horizon Forbidden West uses a more detailed, better-captured and more expressive version of the same established design. Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered goes further by reportedly importing that sequel model and matching its lighting and hair treatment. The visual change is real; the explanation is a generational production upgrade, not a long in-world aging process.
