Most likely, nothing is broken: piglins do not guarantee ender pearls. Bartering gives one random result, and the pearl result is uncommon. First check that you bartered with an adult piglin using a gold ingot; if you dropped the ingot, check that the piglin could pick it up.
Why piglins may not give you pearls
A gold ingot starts a barter; it does not promise a particular item. Minecraft describes gold ingots as “currency to Piglins,” but the output is randomly selected. Minecraft’s Nether Update notes explain the basic mechanic.
For the current Java loot table cited here, an ender-pearl result has a 10/469 chance—about 2.13% per ingot—and yields 2–4 pearls when it occurs. That is a version-specific rate, not a guarantee after a set number of ingots. CraftMC’s bartering simulator lists the current Java probability.
Check the piglin and the gold ingot
- Use an adult piglin. Baby piglins can take gold without returning a barter item. Piglin brutes do not barter. See the Piglin bartering reference.
- Use a gold ingot. Nuggets or other gold items do not start a barter.
- Make sure the barter actually started. You can throw a gold ingot to a piglin or interact with it while holding an ingot, according to Minecraft’s official notes.
- If you threw the ingot, make sure it can be picked up. With mob griefing disabled, a piglin may not pick up the dropped item. Interacting while holding the ingot is an alternative.
How many ingots should you expect to use?
At the cited Java rate, each ingot independently has about a 2.13% chance to produce pearls. The chance of getting no pearl result across several ingots is therefore substantial; the game does not guarantee a pearl after any fixed number of trades.

For illustration, assuming the same 10/469 chance for every ingot, the chance of at least one pearl result after 10 ingots is about 19.4%, and after 32 ingots about 50%. These are probability calculations from that cited rate, not guarantees or a separate in-game mechanic.
Does edition or version change the odds?
Yes. Exact loot-table probabilities can differ by edition and version. A version-specific reference records a change from 10/459 to 10/469 in Java 1.21.6 and Bedrock 1.21.90. The 10/469 figure above should not be applied automatically to older versions or every edition. The version-specific reference documents that change.

If you need an exact diagnosis, check the edition and game version you are playing. Official update notes establish that piglins barter gold for items, but do not provide the current numerical pearl odds.
