Animal Well earned acclaim for the way it turns exploration into a chain of discoveries: its compact, strange world is full of tools, environmental puzzles and secrets, with little conventional combat. Billy Basso developed it solo over about seven years, but publisher Bigmode and marketing support from Dan Adelman were also part of the project. “Top game of 2024” is a critical reputation, not a single, objectively established ranking.
Who made Animal Well?
Billy Basso is credited as Animal Well’s solo developer and creator, while Bigmode is its publisher. The distinction matters: solo development describes the game’s authorship, not a claim that Basso handled every publishing or business function alone. The development accounts also describe marketing support from Dan Adelman.

Basso’s work extended beyond designing the game: accounts of the project say he built its engine from scratch. That is a reported description of his development process, not an independently tested assessment of the engine.
How long did Animal Well take to make?
Development took about seven years. The project began as work Basso pursued in his spare time while he was employed elsewhere, before it became a finished release. That long timeline is part of the story, but it does not mean the game was made entirely without outside support.

- Dense atmospheric puzzle box world with tons of secrets
- Light candles for safety and gradually fill out your map
- Nonlinear -- explore and collect items in whatever order you choose
- Enemies, environment, and items interact in surprising and systemic ways
What kind of game is Animal Well?
It is a surreal puzzle platformer, and it is often grouped with Metroidvanias because exploration, navigation and revisiting spaces are central. But Basso has resisted a tidy genre label: “It’s a weird mish-mash of genres that doesn’t fit cleanly into anything.” Its identity comes less from fitting a familiar category than from how its systems encourage players to investigate.
Exploration and tools instead of conventional combat
The game places players in a dim labyrinth rendered in pixel art, where bright light sources, animals and objects give the environment its distinctive atmosphere. Items are not simply rewards or weapons; their uses can be unexpected, and interactions with the surroundings help players navigate and solve puzzles. GameSpot’s review praised that surprising use of items and the game’s surreal mood.
That emphasis changes the usual rhythm of a platform adventure. Instead of relying on frequent fights, Animal Well asks players to notice details, test what objects can do and make sense of what they encounter. Its secrets are not just decoration around the main route; discovery is a central part of the experience.

Unsettling, but not simply a horror game
The shadowy setting and unusual creatures can feel unsettling, and horror influences are part of its atmosphere. Basso’s description, however, does not reduce it to either “a horrorish game” or “something more cozy”: it is neither simply a horror game nor a cozy one. The contrast between a mysterious world and moments of wonder is part of what makes its tone difficult to pin down.

Why was it called a top game of 2024?
The strongest case for Animal Well’s reputation is its clear, unusual design vision: a solo-developed game built around exploration, puzzling and secrets, rather than a conventional combat loop. The praise reflected in GameSpot’s review supports describing it as an acclaimed game, but one review cannot establish a universal ranking or a numerical critical consensus. “Top game of 2024” is best understood as a critical assessment, not a definitive title shared by every ranking.
Basso’s approach also helps explain why the game does not feel designed around a simple pitch. In a Time Extension interview, he said: “From the get-go, Animal Well wasn’t made with an audience in mind I could pitch to.” The result is a game whose appeal rests on letting players explore an odd world and work out its rules, rather than explaining everything upfront.

What platforms is Animal Well on?
GameSpot lists the game for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and gives May 9, 2024, as its first release date. That source does not provide separate launch dates by platform, so the date should not be treated here as a confirmed platform-by-platform chronology.
What is established—and what is not
The available accounts establish Basso’s solo developer credit, the project’s approximate seven-year development, its spare-time origins and the centrality of exploration and secrets. They do not establish a current sales total, a verified review-aggregate score, or an objectively final ranking as the year’s best game. Those distinctions keep the acclaim in view without turning reputation into an unsupported statistic.
