Roblox animations most often fail because the animation was not published, the script uses the wrong asset ID, or playback is not set up through the right Animator. Start by checking those basics; then look at replication, competing animation tracks, rig compatibility, publishing ownership, or avatar animation-pack settings depending on what you see.
Check that the animation is published and the ID is correct
An animation saved while you work in Studio is not automatically a cloud asset that a script can play. Publish it to create an asset ID, then make sure the script refers to that animation rather than another asset. Roblox explains the publishing and ID steps in its animation playback tutorial and test and save guide.
- Confirm you published the intended animation.
- Check that the ID in the script belongs to that asset. The
AnimationIdvalue should use therbxassetid://prefix followed by the numeric ID. - If a different animation plays, verify the ID before changing other parts of the script.
Check the Animator, loading, and playback sequence
For a character with a Humanoid, the basic sequence is to get its Animator, create an Animation with the correct ID, load it, and play the resulting track. The Animator must be in Workspace before you load an animation. Roblox documents this setup in its animation usage guide and Animator:LoadAnimation() reference.
local humanoid = character:WaitForChild("Humanoid")
local animator = humanoid:WaitForChild("Animator")
local animation = Instance.new("Animation")
animation.AnimationId = "rbxassetid://YOUR_ANIMATION_ID"
local track = animator:LoadAnimation(animation)
track:Play()
Replace YOUR_ANIMATION_ID with the published animation’s numeric ID. This snippet shows the documented API sequence; it is not a project-specific diagnosis. Also, each LoadAnimation() call creates a new track. Do not call it just to look up a track that has already been loaded.

If the animation plays for you but not for other players, check replication
Animation replication depends on where the Animator was created and where playback starts. Roblox’s Animation engine reference states: “If an Animator is created locally, then AnimationTracks loaded with that Animator will not replicate.” The Animation engine reference and Animator reference describe the relevant conditions:
- Player character: The
Animatorshould be created on the server and replicate to clients. An animation started by that character’s player client can replicate to the server and other clients. - Animator outside a player character: If other clients need to see the animation, load and start it on the server.
So if only the local player sees motion, check the Animator’s origin and whether the animation is started in the appropriate context before revising the asset.

If the track runs but the motion looks wrong, inspect other tracks
Another active animation can override or blend with the one you expect. Roblox’s AnimationTrack reference explains that, when two tracks animate the same limb, the higher-priority track controls it. At equal priority, track weights are used to combine motion.
- Check which animation tracks are active while the unexpected pose appears.
- Compare their priorities, especially when both affect the same joints.
- Use a loaded track’s
Lengthas a signal that it has loaded; check it after loading rather than treating an unloaded value as proof that the animation is empty.
Confirm the rig and the animation’s poses
Animations are authored by posing rig joints, so an animation made for a different rig or one that lacks the expected poses may not produce the motion you want. In the Animation Editor guide, Roblox describes working with a rig in the editor. Check that the target rig is the one you intended to animate and that the saved, published asset contains the poses you expect. Without the actual rig and asset, there is no way to identify a specific mismatch from the symptom alone.

For group-owned games, check which creator published the animation
If the experience is group-owned, the publishing creator can matter. Roblox’s Animation Editor guide says to choose the group in the Creator field when publishing an animation for use in a group-owned game. If publishing or ownership errors appear, check that the account owns the asset or has the relevant group permissions; Roblox’s animation-pack documentation also calls out ownership and group permissions for pack uploads. Treat this as a targeted check when the error or setup points to ownership, not as a universal cause of playback failures.
If an equipped animation pack is not applying, check experience settings
This setting applies to avatar animation packs, not every custom animation played by a script. Roblox’s animation-pack guide says the default Player Choice setting lets an equipped pack apply. Choosing Standard R15 or Standard R6 instead overrides player animation packs with the platform’s standard animations. If the issue concerns a custom scripted track, investigate its asset, playback, replication, and priority instead.
