Check that the villager can reach the workstation assigned to its profession, then give it an opportunity to work during the day. The exact wording in Mojang’s guidance differs between Java and Bedrock, so edition and version matter when troubleshooting.
How villager trade restocking works
In Java Edition, Mojang says villagers restock trades when they can work at their workstation. The 2019 Village & Pillage Java release notes describe villagers as able to restock up to twice per day. That is a stated maximum, not a guarantee that every villager will refresh twice regardless of access or circumstances.
For Bedrock Edition, Mojang’s Village & Pillage Bedrock release notes say villagers resupply trades when they arrive at their job site. In either edition, a villager that cannot get to the correct work location may not restock.
Check the workstation and the route to it
- Identify the villager’s profession and its matching workstation. Confirm that the block you expect it to use is the job site associated with that profession.
- Make sure the villager can physically reach the block. Check for walls, fences, trapdoors, water, or other obstacles that might prevent it from walking to the workstation. Mojang’s Java 20W22A snapshot notes said: “Villagers now have to walk to and reach the workstation before they can acquire the profession/work there.” This is a 2020 snapshot-era rule described in Mojang’s 20W22A notes.
- Check whether another villager has the workstation. Mojang’s Java workstation notes say villagers do not try to work at the same workstation. If several villagers and job-site blocks are close together, verify which villager is linked to the block you intend it to use.
- Watch during the work period. Give the villager time to reach its job site and work; do not expect a reset at any arbitrary moment just because a trade is exhausted.
Java vs. Bedrock: what the official guidance establishes

These descriptions come from different release notes and do not establish every behavior in every current game version. If the basic checks pass but trades still do not refresh, note whether you are playing Java or Bedrock and the exact version before assuming the cause.

Consider mods, add-ons, datapacks, and server plugins
If the world is customized, a mod, add-on, datapack, or server plugin may affect villager behavior. Mojang’s cited release notes do not cover every customized setup, so vanilla troubleshooting may not identify the cause. Record the edition, game version, and installed customizations when asking for help.

Probably not as a basic restocking fix. Mojang’s Java 1.20.2 release notes describe Villager Trade Rebalance as an optional experiment that changes some trades and has no effect on normal worlds. Those notes do not say it changes the ordinary restocking process.
