Xbox is bringing selected games to PlayStation to reach players beyond its own consoles—not because every Xbox game is becoming a PlayStation release. Microsoft has described broader availability as a way to help games reach more people, while retaining the option to make some titles exclusive. Which games come to PlayStation is decided title by title, and the direction has shifted over time.
Why is Xbox releasing games on PlayStation?
Xbox’s stated reason is reach. In a February 2024 Official Xbox Podcast, Phil Spencer said, “Xbox is a platform for creators who want to reach the most players.” He added that the devices people want to play on should help make games “as big and popular as they possibly could be.”
That rationale treats the game and its audience as more important than keeping every release tied to one console. Putting a title on PlayStation can make it available to people who do not own an Xbox. It is reasonable to infer that broader distribution may also create more sales opportunities, but the cited sources do not quantify revenue or player growth attributable to PlayStation versions.
Keeping a community connected
For Call of Duty, Spencer has also emphasized community continuity across platforms. In an October 2023 Official Xbox Podcast, he said he wanted PlayStation players to feel “100% part of the community” and described a goal of “100% parity across all platforms as much as we can for launch and content.” He acknowledged that resolution and frame rate can still differ with platform performance. These were stated goals, not independent confirmation that every version is identical.

Does this mean all Xbox games are coming to PS5?
No. Xbox’s announcements name platforms for individual games; a PlayStation release for one title does not establish a policy that applies to the whole catalog. Some games may launch on PlayStation at the same time as Xbox, some may arrive later, and others may not have a PlayStation version announced.
For example, Xbox’s 2024 showcase recap listed Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 for PS5 and PS4, and DOOM: The Dark Ages for PS5. Its 2025 showcase recap listed Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 for PS5 and PS4. These are examples of selected releases, not a complete or current catalog.

How to check a specific game
- Look for the game’s official announcement or its PlayStation Store listing to confirm a PS4 or PS5 version.
- Check the stated release date on each platform; availability may be simultaneous or staggered.
- Look for explicit details about cross-play, cross-save, and content parity rather than assuming they match across versions.
- Distinguish a confirmed release announcement from a report about a future plan.
Has Xbox’s approach changed?
Yes, the public picture has evolved, so statements need dates. In February 2024, Microsoft announced that four games would come to rival platforms. The Associated Press reported at the time that Microsoft described its fundamental approach to exclusivity as unchanged. That account explains the initial announcement; it should not be treated as a definitive description of Xbox’s policy today. See the Associated Press report.
A July 21, 2026 TechRadar report described renewed emphasis on console exclusives alongside reported multiplatform plans for some games, including Fable and Halo: Campaign Evolved. Those details describe the reported direction and plans at that date, not a guarantee that every planned release will arrive on every platform. The report also did not establish a fixed rule that live-service games must be multiplatform while single-player games must be exclusive.

What does this mean for players?
Xbox publishing a game on PlayStation gives players another possible way to access that particular title; it does not make Xbox and PlayStation catalogs interchangeable. If a game matters to your platform choice, use its confirmed platform list and release details rather than relying on the publisher’s ownership or a broader strategy headline. Xbox’s stated aim is to reach more players, but the decision about where each game appears remains selective and can change.
