It depends on the game. Eligible PS4 owners of Mafia: Definitive Edition can claim its PS5 digital edition at no extra cost under 2K’s 2026 upgrade offer. That does not mean every PS4 Mafia game gets a free native PS5 version: Mafia II: Definitive Edition required a separate purchase on PlayStation, while the free Mafia III: Definitive Edition entitlement for PS4 owners dates to its 2020 launch and is not proof of a PS5 upgrade.
PS4-to-PS5 upgrade rules by Mafia game
| Game | What PS4 owners are entitled to | Do you need to buy it again? |
|---|---|---|
| Mafia: Definitive Edition | 2K says owners of a qualifying purchased PS4 copy can claim the PS5 digital edition free. The copy must have been purchased before August 14, 2026; a PS+ monthly-game claim does not qualify. 2K’s upgrade FAQ | Usually no, if your copy and account meet the eligibility rules below. |
| Mafia II: Definitive Edition | 2K describes the PS4 edition as a new PlayStation listing that required purchase. Its free grant for existing owners of the original game applied to Steam on PC, not PlayStation. 2K’s Trilogy FAQ | Yes, if you want the PS4 Definitive Edition and do not already own it; do not expect an older-console copy to grant it. |
| Mafia III: Definitive Edition | 2K says existing physical and digital PS4 owners received the Definitive Edition at no charge when it launched in 2020. This historical entitlement does not establish a native PS5 upgrade. 2K’s Trilogy FAQ | That depends on whether you already received or own the PS4 edition; the 2020 grant is not a separate PS5-upgrade offer. |
The currently listed Mafia Trilogy collection identifies a PS5 version for Mafia: Definitive Edition; its Mafia II and Mafia III entries are not labelled as PS5 editions. A collection containing all three games does not make every entry a native PS5 release.

Who qualifies for the free Mafia: Definitive Edition PS5 upgrade?
According to 2K’s current upgrade terms, the offer is for a physical or digital PS4 copy purchased before August 14, 2026, including a copy obtained as part of Mafia: Trilogy. A game claimed as a PlayStation Plus monthly game is excluded. 2K states that purchases on or after August 14, 2026 already include the newer-generation edition in the library for the purchases described in its FAQ; if your account does not show the entitlement, check the relevant PlayStation Store listing and account.
Digital PS4 copy
- Sign in to the PlayStation account that owns the qualifying game.
- Find the PS5 version of Mafia: Definitive Edition in the PlayStation Store and add it to your library.
PS4 disc
- Use a PS5 model with a disc drive and insert the PS4 game disc.
- Open the game hub and select the upgrade offer.
- Keep the disc inserted whenever you play the PS5 digital upgrade.
The disc must be from a region compatible with your PlayStation. 2K says a disc from another region cannot be used to claim the offer.

PS+ monthly-game claim
A PS+ monthly-game claim is not eligible for this upgrade. 2K states: “For players that claimed the game on PS4 through PS+ as one of your monthly games, the PS5 upgrade is not available.”
Why the Definitive Edition subtitle does not mean the same thing for each game
The upgrade rules attach to specific editions and platforms, not to the shared phrase “Definitive Edition.” Mafia: Definitive Edition is a remake of the 2002 original and has the 2026 PS5 upgrade offer. Mafia II: Definitive Edition had a separate PS4 listing that required purchase; the PC-only free existing-owner offer does not transfer to PlayStation. Mafia III: Definitive Edition was granted to existing PS4 owners at launch in 2020, which is a different entitlement from a native PS5 edition.

Check these details before buying
- Confirm the exact game: Mafia: Definitive Edition, Mafia II: Definitive Edition, or Mafia III: Definitive Edition.
- Check whether your ownership is a purchase or a PS+ monthly-game claim; the latter is excluded from the 2026 Mafia: Definitive Edition upgrade.
- For a disc upgrade, confirm your PS5 has a disc drive, the disc region is compatible, and you can keep the disc inserted to play.
- For a collection, inspect which edition and platform each included game listing actually identifies. The collection does not confer a native PS5 edition on every game.
