Beryl’s “deformed potato” look is an intentional part of staging his sword fight with Fissel—not how the finished 2D scene is meant to appear. YAMATOWORKS reshaped the 3D character to get the pose and furious side profile the artists wanted in the final image.
Why was Beryl’s 3D anatomy distorted?
In its 2 October 2026 report, 80 Level describes how YAMATOWORKS adjusted Beryl’s anatomy while developing a sword battle between Beryl and Fissel. The original 3D setup did not produce the desired pose and expression, so the team squished and stretched features to make the final image read more strongly.
The distortion was a means to an end: the 3D model served the shot, rather than dictating realistic anatomy. The report says viewers would not see those manipulations in the finished 2D image.
What scene was the team working on?
The adjustments were made for Beryl’s sword battle with Fissel. The 80 Level account names YAMATOWORKS artists Ryo Tsunoda, Meiya Okuda, and Kaito Kobayashi. It also says the team used LightWave 3D to create the battle choreography.

What the “deformed potato” image does—and does not—show
- It shows: an intentionally altered 3D setup used to achieve a more forceful pose and furious side profile.
- It does not show: the intended appearance of the final 2D scene, which was meant to convey the expression without revealing the 3D squashing and stretching.
The memorable description is about the behind-the-scenes construction, not evidence that Beryl looks that way in the finished image.
