Blizzard confirmed on April 25, 2024, that it would not hold BlizzCon that year. The company said it had considered the decision over the previous year, but did not name a single reason. Instead, it outlined a different mix of game updates, convention appearances, esports events, livestreams and Warcraft anniversary celebrations.
What reason did Blizzard give for canceling BlizzCon 2024?
Blizzard’s announcement said the decision followed “careful consideration over the last year” and “was not made lightly.” It also stressed that BlizzCon remained special to the company and its community, and that Blizzard was excited to bring it back in future years. That means claims that Blizzard officially blamed finances, staffing, Microsoft ownership, or a lack of announcements go beyond what the company said publicly. Its explanation was that it had considered the decision and would approach the year differently.
What did Blizzard plan to do instead?
Blizzard described other ways it intended to share news and bring players together during 2024. These plans were not presented as BlizzCon under another name; the company said the events were distinct, while hoping they would share some of the convention’s celebratory spirit.

Was BlizzCon canceled because there was nothing to announce?
Blizzard did not say that. The company named upcoming game launches and other event plans, but did not state that a shortage of announcements caused the cancellation.
A same-day report from Blizzard Watch offered a separate interpretation: because BlizzCon usually took place in early November, the World of Warcraft and Diablo IV expansions would have been out shortly beforehand, potentially making them less useful as major convention reveals. That is reporting context about the release calendar, not a reason Blizzard explicitly gave.

Did Blizzard give a financial or attendance reason?
No financial, attendance, cost or revenue figures appeared in the public announcement. It therefore does not support a claim that a particular economic factor drove the decision.

Yes. Blizzard later announced that BlizzCon would return to the Anaheim Convention Center on September 12–13, 2026, with programming including an Opening Ceremony, panels, the Darkmoon Faire, friendly competition and hands-on gameplay. The return announcement establishes that skipping 2024 was not the end of the convention. The dates have passed, so consult Blizzard’s official BlizzCon site for current event information rather than treating that schedule as upcoming.
