If you can hear other people on Xbox but they cannot hear you, troubleshoot your microphone’s input path first. Check mute controls and the headset connection, then find out whether the problem affects Xbox party chat, one game’s voice chat, or both. Hearing chat confirms that audio output works; it does not confirm that your microphone is sending audio.
Why can nobody hear me on Xbox even though I can hear them?
Your speakers or headset can receive chat audio while the microphone, its connection, or its permissions fail to send your voice. Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting guidance recommends checking mute, connection, input selection, and microphone access: Fix microphone problems.
Check mute and reconnect the headset
- Check every mute control. Look for an inline switch on the headset cable, a headset mute control, and a mute switch on any adapter you use. Microsoft’s general microphone guidance includes checking the headset’s mute button. Headset controls vary, so use the instructions for your model rather than assuming a particular layout.
- Reseat the connection. Disconnect the headset from the controller or adapter, then plug it back in firmly. Check for a loose connector or damaged cable.
Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Wireless Headset User Guide describes mute behavior for that legacy headset. It is not a layout guide for current headsets.
Find out whether the issue is party chat or game chat
Test your microphone in an Xbox party and in the affected game’s voice chat. These are separate contexts: a game can have its own voice-chat settings, and working party chat does not necessarily mean in-game chat is enabled.

- HYPERCLEAR CARDIOID MIC — An improved pickup pattern ensures more voice and less noise as it tapers off towards the mic’s back and sides, with the sweet spot easily placed at the mouth because of the mic’s bendable design
- ADVANCED PASSIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — Sturdy closed earcups fully cover the ears to prevent noise from leaking into the headset, with its cushions providing a closer seal for more sound isolation
- LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN WITH MEMORY FOAM EAR CUSHIONS — At just 240 g, the headset features thicker headband padding and memory foam ear cushions with leatherette to keep gaming in peak form during grueling tournaments and training sessions
- WORKS WITH WINDOWS SONIC — Make the most of the headset’s powerful drivers by pairing it with lifelike surround sound that places audio with pinpoint accuracy, heightening in-game awareness and immersion
- Party chat works, but a game cannot hear you: Check that game’s voice-chat setting, selected input device, communication permissions, and cross-play voice settings. Controls differ by game; consult its current official support information.
- Neither party chat nor game chat works: Continue checking the headset, controller connection, and account communication permissions.
Bungie’s Destiny Audio Guide illustrates how a game’s voice chat can be governed separately from platform party chat. Its instructions apply to Destiny, not every Xbox game.
Review communication permissions on a family-managed account
If the account belongs to a child or is managed by a family organizer, ask the organizer to review communication and multiplayer privacy permissions. Xbox menu names and available controls can change across console generations, so check current Xbox Support guidance for the correct route rather than relying on an outdated menu path.

If you use Xbox chat on Windows, check microphone access and input
For the Xbox app or Game Bar on a Windows PC, confirm that Windows allows microphone access and that the intended headset microphone is selected. Microsoft lists these checks for Windows 10 and 11.
- On Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Turn on device and app access as appropriate; allow desktop apps if you are using a desktop client.
- Open Settings > System > Sound > Input and select the headset microphone you intend to use.
- Run the microphone test on that page and check whether Windows detects your voice.
If Windows does not detect the microphone, the issue is likely in the local input path or permissions rather than just one game’s chat. See Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting steps.

Cross-test the headset and controller before replacing anything
Test the headset on another compatible device, or try a known-good compatible headset with the Xbox and controller. These checks help narrow down the fault, but they do not guarantee a diagnosis.
- If your headset fails on other compatible devices too, investigate the headset, connector, or cable.
- If a second compatible headset works on the same Xbox but yours does not, the original headset is the more likely source of the problem.
- If multiple known-good headsets fail through one controller, investigate that controller’s connection or headset jack.
Before buying replacement equipment, verify compatibility with your Xbox model, controller, and headset. Connector types and wireless support vary.

When should you look at the network?
If chat cannot connect or repeatedly drops, network troubleshooting may be relevant. But when you can hear others and the specific symptom is that they cannot hear your microphone, first check mute, the local connection, microphone selection, permissions, and whether the failure is limited to one game. That one-way symptom alone does not establish that NAT or another network setting is the cause.
