Check those causes in that order, starting with the edition and invitation.
1. Check that your edition and game version match
Java and Bedrock Realms are separate: you must join a Realm that supports the edition you are playing. Update Minecraft to the latest release, since Realms may not support some older game versions. See Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements.

2. Confirm the invitation was sent to the right account and accepted
Make sure you are signed in to the account that received the invitation. An invite that has not been accepted will not give you access to the Realm.
Java Edition
Open Minecraft Realms and select Join Realm. If you are joining with a code, enter the code there. Once you accept an invitation, the Realm appears in your available Realms list. Minecraft’s Java Realm joining instructions cover the process.

Bedrock Edition
Accept the invite in Minecraft’s in-game Inbox, or open Play → Realms → Add/join Realm → Join an existing Realm and enter the invite link. See Minecraft’s Bedrock invitation instructions.
3. Check Microsoft account permissions and sign-in
Verify that the account you are using can play multiplayer. If Minecraft says, “You cannot play online multiplayer because of how your Microsoft account is setup,” and this is a child account, the adult Family Account owner needs to review the account’s privacy and multiplayer settings. 4. Check whether your console requires an online subscription
On Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation, Minecraft lists Xbox Game Pass Core, Nintendo Switch Online, and PlayStation Plus, respectively, as requirements for multiplayer on those consoles. Check that the relevant subscription is active. This is separate from a Realms subscription: Java Realm guests do not need to buy their own Realms subscription to join, but console multiplayer may still require the platform’s online service. 5. Ask the Realm owner to check its status
Ask the owner to confirm that the Realm is open and their Realms subscription is active. They can try closing and reopening it if access problems continue. 6. Test your connection and network setup
Check that your device has a stable internet connection or, for local network play, a stable LAN connection. Minecraft’s multiplayer troubleshooting identifies custom DNS and port configurations as possible sources of connection problems, but there is no single router setting to change for every error. Use the guidance for your specific error and setup in Minecraft’s multiplayer connectivity troubleshooting. If your device supports it, testing with Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi can help determine whether the wireless connection is unstable; it will not fix access, account, subscription, or Realm-status problems.
7. Refresh your sign-in and restart
- Sign out of Minecraft.
- Restart the game system, then reopen Minecraft and sign in again.
- On Windows, Minecraft also recommends signing out of Microsoft Store, Xbox, and other running Minecraft services, then closing those apps before trying again.
Follow Minecraft’s Realms connection troubleshooting if the connection still fails.

What to do if it still will not connect
Note the exact error message, your platform, and whether you are using Java or Bedrock. Those details help distinguish a Realm access issue from a local network or platform problem. Check the relevant Minecraft help page for that error; the steps above do not identify a universal fix for every code or network configuration.
