Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Most Minecraft connection failures come down to a server that is offline, an edition or version mismatch, an incorrect address or port, account restrictions, or a network blocking the connection. Start by checking whether the problem affects one server or every server; that distinction quickly separates server-side faults from problems with your game, account, or network.
Do this first:
- Check the Minecraft service-status page.
- Confirm you launched the same edition—Java or Bedrock—as the server supports.
- Check the required game version, including whether the server expects a release, Preview/Beta, Snapshot, or specific modpack.
- Re-enter the address and port supplied by the server owner.
- Restart Minecraft and the launcher, then sign out and back into the correct Microsoft account.
- If it is someone else’s server, ask the owner whether it is online and whether your account is allowed to join.
First identify what you’re trying to join
“A Minecraft server” can mean a Java public server, a Bedrock featured or dedicated server, a Realm, a friend-hosted world, or a LAN world. The right fix depends on which one is failing. Java and Bedrock are separate multiplayer ecosystems by default; a Java player cannot ordinarily join a standard Bedrock server, or vice versa. Cross-play requires a server-side bridge or other compatible setup, and it must be configured by the server owner. Minecraft’s edition guide explains the distinction.

- One server fails, but others work: focus on that server’s address, status, port, whitelist, version, mods, or host network.
- Every server fails: check service status, account permissions, launcher authentication, local firewall or VPN, and the network you are using.
- Only your account fails: check privacy settings, invitations, whitelist or ban status, and sign-in.
- Nobody can join your server: the server process, hosting account, firewall, public address, or port forwarding is more likely to be at fault.
Check whether Minecraft services are unavailable
Check Minecraft service status before changing network settings. An outage affecting logins or multiplayer sessions can look like a local connection failure. If unrelated servers, Realms, or account functions fail at the same time, changing DNS or reinstalling the game is unlikely to fix it. Service status can change, so verify it when the problem occurs rather than relying on an old report.
Make sure the edition and version match
Use the server’s edition
Launch Java Edition for a Java server and Bedrock Edition for a Bedrock server unless the owner confirms that a cross-play bridge is installed and supports your connection. Windows players may have access to both editions; owning both does not make their servers interchangeable. Java and Bedrock Realms are also separate: Realms support cross-platform play within the same edition, not Java-to-Bedrock play. See Minecraft Realms.

Use the required game build and content
Check the exact version the server requires. Compare the game edition and version, release versus Preview/Beta/Snapshot, server software, and—on modded Java servers—the mod loader and modpack. Do not assume nearby versions are compatible: server owners can restrict connections, and compatibility tools vary by setup. Microsoft warns that Bedrock Dedicated Server protocol changes can accompany minor-version changes, so different minor versions are not necessarily compatible. Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server guide covers version compatibility.
For Java, the client may need the same required mods and mod versions as the server, using a supported loader such as Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge. If the server is reached and then rejects your client, a mod, loader, resource-pack, or authentication handshake problem is more plausible than a basic routing failure. For Bedrock, try the normal release build and temporarily disable nonessential add-ons or resource packs if the disconnect happens during loading.
Check the server address and port
Enter the address exactly as the owner supplied it. Do not add https://, a webpage path, or a trailing slash. A hostname can stop resolving if its DNS record changes; a numeric public IP can become outdated if a home host’s ISP changes it.
Java Edition
A Java address may look like server.example.com or server.example.com:25566. Port 25565 is common by default, but the owner may use a different port. Include :port when the owner gives you a non-default port; do not guess it.

- Open Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Select Multiplayer, then Add Server or Direct Connection.
- Enter the address provided by the owner, including a specified non-default port.
- Join using the required game version and mod profile.
Bedrock Edition
Bedrock server entries commonly require separate address and port fields. Microsoft lists 19132 and 19133 as default IPv4 and IPv6 ports for Bedrock Dedicated Server, but owners can change them in the server configuration. Use the owner’s actual port rather than assuming a default. Microsoft’s setup guide documents these defaults.
- Open Bedrock Edition and select Play.
- Open the Servers tab and choose Add Server.
- Enter the server name, address, and port supplied by the owner.
- Confirm that your client is on the required release version.
Check Microsoft/Xbox multiplayer permissions
You can be signed in and still be prevented from joining multiplayer. Microsoft/Xbox privacy controls can restrict multiplayer, invitations, or communication, particularly for a child or family-managed account. The account organizer may need to review permissions for joining multiplayer games, playing with people outside the platform network, receiving invitations, and communicating by voice, text, or invites. Use the current guidance at Minecraft parental controls and the Xbox privacy settings; account screens and labels can change.
Changing one setting may not override other family restrictions. On consoles, online multiplayer may also require the platform’s own subscription; requirements vary by platform and region. Minecraft’s edition guide outlines platform differences.
Check the server before changing your network
If you are joining someone else’s server, ask the owner to check its console or hosting panel. A player cannot repair a stopped server, a changed address, a full server, or a host-side firewall rule.

- Is the server process running, and has it finished restarting or updating?
- Is the hosting account active, and has the provider reported an outage or suspension?
- Is the server accepting your edition and version, and is it full?
- Are you on the whitelist, and has your account been banned?
- Does the owner see your connection attempt in the console or logs?
For Bedrock Dedicated Server, the owner should also check the configured ports, firewall, and allow-list. Microsoft’s Bedrock server properties reference documents configurable settings, including ports and authentication-related options.
Test your firewall, VPN, and network safely
A local firewall, antivirus network filter, VPN, proxy, or restricted Wi-Fi network can block Minecraft traffic. On Windows, make sure Minecraft is allowed through Defender Firewall on the network profile you are actually using. Third-party security software can have its own network rules. School, work, hotel, library, and guest Wi-Fi may block game traffic or isolate devices.
- Confirm Minecraft is allowed through the firewall; prefer a narrow app or port rule.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy and try again. Some servers block VPN traffic, so a VPN is a variable to test, not a universal fix.
- If needed, briefly test whether security software is blocking traffic, then re-enable protection immediately. Do not leave the firewall disabled.
- Try another device or a mobile hotspot. If the hotspot works but home Wi-Fi does not, the result points toward the home router, ISP, DNS, filtering, or NAT, but does not identify which one.
Changing DNS is only relevant when a hostname fails to resolve; it cannot bring an offline server online, open a closed port, correct an edition mismatch, or change account permissions.
If you host the server yourself
Prove the server works locally first
Start the server and test from the host or the same local network. A successful local connection proves that the process can accept a local connection; it does not prove remote players can reach it from the internet. For Bedrock Dedicated Server on Windows, Microsoft documents a same-machine loopback limitation: Windows Minecraft may not connect to the Bedrock server on that computer unless loopback is enabled. See the Bedrock server setup guide.

Separate LAN access from public access
- A LAN address such as
192.168.x.xor10.x.x.xis private and works only inside the local network. Do not give it to remote players. - Remote players need the correct public IP or a hostname that resolves to it, plus the server’s configured port.
- For a home-hosted server, reserve or otherwise stabilize the host computer’s local IP, forward the required port from the router to that computer, and allow the port through its firewall.
- Bedrock Dedicated Server uses configurable
server-portandserver-portv6settings; its documented defaults are19132and19133. Microsoft gives these example Linux firewall commands for those default ports:
sudo ufw allow 19132
sudo ufw allow 19133
sudo ufw reload
Use the ports actually configured on your server; do not copy default-port rules if you changed them.
Check NAT, the ISP, and external reachability
If local players can join but remote players time out, check port forwarding, the host firewall, and whether the public IP or DNS hostname changed. Double NAT means two routers are translating traffic; both may need configuration, or one may need bridge mode. CGNAT is an ISP arrangement that can prevent inbound port forwarding even when router settings look correct. If your setup depends on inbound IPv4 connections, ask your ISP whether you have a public IPv4 address or whether it offers another supported option. Test from a genuinely external network; joining from inside the same home network may not test public reachability reliably.

Error wording varies by edition and version. Treat these as clues about the connection layer, not proof of one specific cause.
| Error or symptom | Likely layer | First checks |
|---|---|---|
Unknown host or Could not resolve hostname |
Name resolution | Check spelling and hostname; ask whether the address or DNS changed. DNS changes will not fix other failure types. |
Connection timed out |
No response from destination | Check whether the server is online, then verify address and port, firewall, forwarding, and possible CGNAT. |
Connection refused |
Host reached, but no service accepted the connection on that port | Check that the server is running and listening on the specified port and that the port and firewall rule are correct. |
Outdated client |
Client version mismatch | Update or select the game version the server requires. |
Outdated server |
Server version mismatch | Ask the owner which version the server is running and whether it has updated. |
Invalid session or Failed to verify username |
Authentication or service | Restart the launcher, sign out and back in to the correct account, and check service status. |
| Bedrock says multiplayer connection failed | Account, service, network, or compatibility | Check privacy permissions, updates, service status, and whether another network works. |
| Realm unavailable | Realm, account, or service | Check service status, sign-in, and whether the Realm owner can access it. |
| LAN works, but remote players cannot join | Host networking | Check public address, port forwarding, firewall, and CGNAT or double NAT. |
| Hotspot works, but home Wi-Fi does not | Home network or ISP | Check router rules, DNS, filtering, double NAT, or ISP restrictions. |
If only one player cannot join
When other players can enter the same server, the server is less likely to be the sole cause. Check the affected player’s account, client, and local connection in this order:
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
- Ask another player to confirm they can still join.
- Have the affected player test a known working server.
- Remove and re-add the server entry to clear a stale saved address.
- Sign out and back into the correct Microsoft account.
- Try the required clean, unmodded profile or release build.
- Test another network, such as a mobile hotspot.
- Ask the owner to confirm the exact username, whitelist or ban status, and relevant server-log entry.
If nobody can join
When all players fail, have the owner check the server process and hosting dashboard before asking everyone to change DNS. Likely causes include a stopped or crashed server, host outage or suspension, a changed public IP or DNS record, a broken port-forwarding or firewall rule, a version change, or a full server. If the server is local-only, its private LAN address will not work for remote players.
Choose a hosting method that fits the problem
Changing hosting is not a fix for a wrong edition, restricted account, outdated client, or Minecraft service outage. It can make sense when the recurring problem is that a home server is difficult to keep online or expose safely to the internet.
| Method | Useful when | Common trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Friend-hosted Bedrock world | You want a simple session without managing a dedicated server. | The host generally needs to be online; account, platform, and network restrictions can still interfere. |
| LAN | Players are on the same local network. | It is not internet hosting; guest Wi-Fi isolation can prevent device discovery. |
| Self-hosted Java or Bedrock Dedicated Server | You want control over the server and are comfortable maintaining it. | You manage uptime, updates, backups, firewall, public reachability, and—in home hosting—NAT and port forwarding. |
| Realms | You want an always-online private world with invitations and less network setup. | Java and Bedrock Realms are separate; Realms offer less server-level control than a dedicated setup. |
| Third-party hosting | You want a managed server, or need server software and controls beyond a Realm. | There is a recurring cost, and provider features, performance, backups, and terms differ. |
| Cross-play bridge | Players on Java and Bedrock need to join one compatible server. | The server owner must install and configure compatible bridge software; it adds another possible failure point. |
Minecraft’s Realms page lists its current plans and terms; check it directly for up-to-date availability, pricing, player limits, and trial details. Invited friends do not need their own Realms subscription, but they must use the edition compatible with that Realm.
When to contact the owner or support
For a third-party server, contact its owner or host first; for a Realm or account problem, use Minecraft Technical Support as appropriate. Include details that help distinguish a client, account, or server fault:
