If you cannot find Buy as a gift, the usual reason is that the specific game or edition is not eligible, the option is hidden in another menu, or the purchase is being blocked by region, account, or payment rules. Xbox’s current guidance supports gifting eligible games, add-ons, and some subscriptions through Xbox consoles, the Xbox app on PC, the Xbox Store online, and Microsoft Store on Windows.
The most important restriction is geography: the buyer and recipient should generally be in the same country, and digital gifts are tied to the country or region where they were purchased. (Xbox Wire)

The five most likely reasons you cannot gift an Xbox game
- The game or edition is not gift-eligible. Xbox supports eligible or selected digital content, not every item in the Microsoft Store. Virtual currency, consumables, some bundles, preorders, and account-bound content can have different rules.
- The gift control is hidden. On PC and in a browser, Buy as a gift may appear inside the … menu instead of beside the main purchase button.
- The buyer and recipient are in different countries. Xbox says the recipient should be in the same country as the purchaser. Gifts and codes generally can be redeemed only in the country or region where they were bought.
- Checkout is failing. A declined payment method, incorrect billing details, account restriction, family purchase setting, or temporary Microsoft Store problem can prevent the transaction.
- The recipient is using the wrong account or platform. A gift is claimed by a specific Microsoft account and must match the recipient’s supported console or PC platform.
How Xbox game gifting works
Buy as a gift creates a new digital gift entitlement or redemption code. It does not transfer a game that you already own from your library. The recipient receives an Xbox message and/or email, then uses Redeem code to claim the content. Confirm the recipient’s email address or Xbox identity before paying.
This is also different from Xbox console sharing or Microsoft family settings. Sharing can provide access or impose parental controls, but it does not convert an already-owned license into a transferable present.

How to gift an Xbox game correctly
Xbox’s labels can change between store surfaces, but these are the current paths described in its gifting guide.
Xbox console
- Open the Microsoft Store.
- Find the game.
- Select the gift-wrap icon.
- Choose someone from your Xbox friends list or enter an email address.
- Confirm the payment method and complete the purchase.
The recipient should receive an Xbox message and email containing redemption instructions. (Xbox Wire)
Xbox app on PC
- Search for the game in the Xbox app.
- Select the … menu beside the purchase button.
- Choose Buy as Gift.
- Select an Xbox friend or enter the recipient’s email address.
- Complete payment.
Xbox describes the same route for the Xbox full-screen experience on supported handheld devices. (Xbox Wire)

Xbox Store or Microsoft Store in a browser
- Open the Xbox Store or Microsoft Store online and find the game, add-on, or subscription.
- Open the … menu beside the purchase button.
- Select Buy as a gift.
- Sign in, choose a payment method, enter the recipient’s email address, and complete checkout.
The browser method is email-based rather than friend-list-based. (Xbox Wire)

What to do when “Buy as a gift” is missing
A missing button is not automatically an Xbox software fault. First determine whether the product is eligible.
- Check the exact product. Make sure you are viewing the full game rather than virtual currency, a consumable, or an account-bound item.
- Check the edition. A standard, deluxe, cross-generation, PC, or console edition may have different purchase and gifting availability.
- Inspect the menu. On PC or the web, open the … menu beside the buy button.
- Try another official store surface. Open the same product in a browser if the console or app does not show the gift control.
- Update and restart the app. Install available Xbox or Microsoft Store updates, then sign out and back in or restart the device.
- Stop retrying if it is absent everywhere. If no gift option appears on the console, app, or web listing, treat the title or edition as possibly non-giftable rather than assuming repeated attempts will restore it.
Microsoft’s earlier gifting documentation also described the feature as applying to selected games and supported downloadable content, so “every Xbox game can be gifted” is not an accurate assumption. (Xbox Wire)

What to do when the gift button appears but payment fails
This is a checkout problem, not a missing-feature problem. Work through these checks:
- Confirm that you are signed into the intended Microsoft account.
- Review the saved payment method, billing address, and account country.
- Check whether the bank or payment provider declined the transaction.
- Review family settings or other purchase restrictions on the account.
- Try the browser store if the console or app fails, or try the app if the browser fails.
- Check your Microsoft order history and bank authorization before submitting the payment again. Repeated attempts can create confusion when a charge is pending.
- If you were charged but no gift message or code was issued, contact Xbox or Microsoft Support with the order details.
Xbox’s purchase-error guidance recommends reviewing payment options and account purchase settings for failed transactions. (Xbox Support)
What to do when the recipient cannot redeem the gift
Start with the country restriction before troubleshooting the code itself.

- Verify the countries. The buyer and recipient should be in the same country. A gift purchased for one region may not redeem in another.
- Check the account. Have the recipient sign into the Microsoft account intended to own the game.
- Use the original message or email. The recipient should open it and select Redeem code.
- Check code status. Confirm that it has not already been redeemed, canceled, or invalidated after a refund.
- Check platform compatibility. Confirm that the gifted edition supports the recipient’s Xbox console or Windows device.
- Do not use a VPN or falsify the account region. Changing locations is not a reliable fix and can create account, redemption, and refund complications.
Microsoft’s published guidance ties gifting and gift-card redemption to country and region. Community reports on Microsoft Q&A also describe region-locked game gifts, but those reports are examples rather than a replacement for Microsoft’s official support or refund decision. (Xbox Wire, Microsoft gift-card FAQ, Microsoft Q&A)
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you gift an Xbox game to someone in another country?
Not dependably. Xbox’s current guidance says the recipient should be in the same country as the purchaser, and gift tokens are generally redeemable only in the purchasing country or region. A foreign-region code or gift card can leave the recipient with content they cannot claim.
Do not rely on a VPN, a deliberately changed account location, or a cheaper foreign storefront. If the purchase was made for the wrong region, stop trying random region changes and contact Microsoft or the seller to ask about available refund options. A refund is not guaranteed, particularly after a code has been redeemed.

Best alternatives when direct gifting does not work
1. A same-region Xbox gift card
This is usually the safest digital fallback when the game is not giftable or the recipient should choose the edition. The recipient receives account balance rather than a specific game and can spend it on eligible games, add-ons, apps, movies, accessories, or Xbox-related subscriptions through participating Microsoft Stores.
Buy the card for the recipient’s actual country and currency—not automatically your own. Microsoft states that gift cards are country- and currency-specific. Account balance generally cannot be converted to cash or used to buy another gift certificate. (Microsoft Xbox Gift Card, Microsoft Support)
2. A Game Pass subscription gift
Xbox’s current gifting guide says some subscriptions, including Xbox Game Pass Ultimate in supported cases, can be gifted. This is useful when the recipient wants access to a catalog rather than one particular game. Check the recipient’s country and whether they already have the subscription before purchasing. (Xbox Wire)
3. A physical copy
A physical game can avoid a missing digital gift button, but confirm the disc works with the recipient’s console. Physical products can also have regional or platform limitations.
4. An authorized local retailer code
A code bought from an authorized retailer in the recipient’s country may work when direct gifting is unavailable. Check the platform, edition, and redemption region before buying; not every third-party code works internationally.
5. Reimbursement
If the recipient is in another country or the store will not offer a gift option, asking them to purchase the game locally and reimbursing them may be less risky than sending a region-mismatched code. Keep the payment arrangement separate from account credentials: never share a Microsoft password.
