If Ubisoft Connect will not install a game, the cause is usually one of six things: the wrong Ubisoft account or missing entitlement, a damaged launcher, a connection problem, insufficient storage, Windows blocking the install folder, or leftover files from an earlier installation. Steam and Epic Games purchases add a separate account-linking and launcher-handoff problem.
First identify the symptom—missing game, disabled Install button, stalled download, folder-creation error, or a failed installation near 100%. Then follow the matching fixes below. Avoid deleting the entire Ubisoft folder or installed game directory until you have tried to locate or repair the existing files.
What does “can’t install” mean?
The symptom points toward the likely cause:
| Symptom | Most likely causes |
|---|---|
| The game is missing from Library | Wrong Ubisoft account, missing entitlement, incomplete Steam/Epic linking, or an edition/platform mismatch |
| Install is greyed out | Missing entitlement, unsupported platform, existing installation, or an incomplete launcher state |
| The download never starts | Connection, service availability, cache, permissions, or launcher-process problems |
| The download stops or loops | Unstable network, corrupted cache, antivirus interference, insufficient space, or a failing drive |
| Connect cannot create a folder | Write permissions, a protected directory, an unavailable drive, or security software blocking access |
| The install fails at 99% | Temporary storage, verification, permissions, or corrupted download problems |
| The game appears installed but Connect wants to download it again | The library location changed, files were moved, or Connect no longer recognizes the existing installation |
If every Ubisoft game fails, prioritize account, launcher, network, security, storage, and service-wide causes. If only one title fails, check that game’s edition, requirements, regional availability, and existing files first.
1. Confirm the Ubisoft account owns the game
This is the first check, especially for games bought through Steam or Epic. Sign out of Ubisoft Connect, then sign back in with the Ubisoft account used when the game was first activated. Verify the email address, username, edition, and PC platform against your purchase receipt.

A game appearing in Steam or Epic does not prove that the currently signed-in Ubisoft account has the matching Ubisoft entitlement. A purchase made through another storefront may require the account-linking and first-launch process to be completed. If the game came from a subscription, confirm that the subscription is active and that the specific title is still included. Console ownership also does not automatically provide the PC version.
Do not repeatedly unlink and relink accounts as a first step. That can create additional activation and entitlement confusion. If the game is visible in the purchasing storefront but absent from Ubisoft Connect, keep the receipt and account details for Ubisoft Support.
2. Check which launcher should start the installation
For some Steam and Epic titles, the purchasing storefront controls the download trigger or launch handoff while Ubisoft Connect verifies the Ubisoft account, updates, or required components. The exact relationship varies by game and edition.
- Update Steam or Epic Games Launcher.
- Exit both launchers completely, including their notification-area icons. Close leftover processes in Task Manager if necessary.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Steam or Epic first and start the installation there when that storefront owns the game.
- Sign in to Ubisoft Connect when prompted, using the account linked to the purchase.
Epic’s support guidance recommends updating its launcher, clearing its cache when appropriate, checking whether the game appears in Ubisoft Connect, and launching through the appropriate launcher. See Epic’s troubleshooting instructions.

Ubisoft Connect is a free desktop service accessed through the official Ubisoft Connect download page. Use that page rather than third-party installers, repacks, registry cleaners, replacement DLLs, or unofficial download tools.
Ubisoft says that an internet connection, Ubisoft account, and Ubisoft Connect client may be required to install, launch, access, or unlock some content. It also does not guarantee uninterrupted service availability in every location or on every device. Check Ubisoft’s official support and service-status channels before making destructive changes. If the service is experiencing an outage, repeatedly retrying the download will not repair your PC.

To separate a Ubisoft-specific problem from a general connection failure:
- Open several unrelated websites or online services.
- Disable a VPN or proxy temporarily.
- Restart the router and PC.
- Test a wired connection or another network if possible.
- As an optional Windows diagnostic, open Command Prompt as administrator and run
ipconfig /flushdns, then restart Ubisoft Connect. This only addresses a possible local DNS condition; it cannot repair an entitlement or launcher-cache problem.
4. Check storage on both drives
Do not check only the advertised download size. Installation may need additional space for decompression, temporary files, patches, verification, language data, and installation metadata. The game drive and the Windows system drive—normally C:—can both matter even when the game is being installed elsewhere.
- Check free space on the destination drive.
- Check free space on
C:. - Confirm the drive opens normally in File Explorer.
- Check whether a removable drive is connected and retaining the expected drive letter.
- Avoid network shares and cloud-synchronized folders while troubleshooting.
- Check the individual game’s current requirements rather than relying on a universal free-space number.
If the drive is nearly full, disconnected, read-only, or reporting file-system errors, fix that problem before retrying. An external drive that sleeps, disconnects, or is beginning to fail can make a download stop near completion.
5. Give Windows a usable installation folder
Windows may block Connect from writing to a protected directory, a folder owned by another user, or a drive that is unavailable. Create a simple local library folder on a healthy internal drive, for example D:Ubisoft Games, then select it in Connect if the client allows you to change the destination.
As a diagnostic test, right-click Ubisoft Connect and choose Run as administrator once. If installation works only this way, the result suggests a permissions or security-software issue—not that Connect must always run elevated. Correct the folder permissions or security rule instead of permanently running every application as administrator.
Also check Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history for blocked Ubisoft processes or installers. Temporarily testing with antivirus or ransomware protection changed can identify interference, but leave protection disabled only for the shortest possible test. Prefer a narrowly scoped exception for trusted, official Ubisoft files and folders, then restore normal protection.

6. Reset only the Ubisoft Connect cache
A damaged cache can cause a blank Library, zero-percent downloads, repeated “try again” messages, disappearing games, or downloads that repeatedly verify and restart. Cache clearing is a non-destructive launcher repair, not a universal solution.
- Exit Ubisoft Connect from the notification area.
- Open Task Manager and confirm Ubisoft Connect processes have closed.
- Open the Ubisoft Game Launcher installation folder. Its location is version- and installation-dependent;
C:Program Files (x86)UbisoftUbisoft Game Launcheris a commonly reported default, not a guaranteed path. - Optionally copy the cache folder somewhere safe.
- Rename or delete only the cache folder.
- Restart Windows, open Connect, sign in again, and retry the installation.
Do not automatically delete the entire Ubisoft folder. That can remove useful configuration, detection information, or other data. A Microsoft Q&A response also recommends checking network access and system-drive space, clearing the cache, and reinstalling the launcher if necessary; treat that as practical secondary guidance rather than an official universal procedure.
7. Recover an incomplete or unrecognized installation
If the game folder already exists, preserve it until Connect has had a chance to detect it. The current client may expose an option named Locate installed game, Find installed files, Detect installed game, or similar. Menu wording varies by client version and title.
- Identify the existing game folder and confirm it is on an accessible drive.
- Use Connect’s locate, verify, repair, or equivalent function if available.
- Point the launcher to the existing folder rather than deleting it.
- Allow Connect to verify or repair the files.
Not every Ubisoft title or storefront supports importing an existing installation in the same way. If no locate option exists, one version-dependent workaround is to begin an install to the same parent folder, pause after the new directory is created, close Connect, and compare it with the existing files. Back up the folder first, and do not merge or overwrite files blindly. If verification repeatedly fails, move the old folder aside and perform a clean download.
8. Reinstall Ubisoft Connect without unnecessarily deleting games
Use a full client reinstall only if Connect will not update, repeatedly crashes, or the cache reset and other checks fail. Reinstalling the client does not fix a missing purchase, an unavailable Ubisoft service, or a failing destination drive.
- Back up local saves and important configuration files first. Save locations and cloud-save behavior vary by title.
- Uninstall Ubisoft Connect.
- Read the uninstall dialog carefully and preserve installed games or local saves if the available option offers that choice.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current client from Ubisoft’s official download page.
- Reinstall it and sign in with the original Ubisoft account.
- Point Connect to the existing game library where possible.
Do not assume every client version provides identical preservation prompts. Do not delete installed game directories before checking for a locate or detection function.

9. Check the game’s own requirements
If only one title will not install, check that game’s current requirements and product page. Confirm the supported Windows version, CPU, GPU, RAM, DirectX or runtime requirements, storage needs, SSD recommendations, additional online or anti-cheat requirements, and the correct PC edition.
Do not apply one Ubisoft game’s requirements to every Ubisoft title. Ubisoft notes that performance depends on the user’s equipment and that software updates may be needed to continue using its services. Installation and launching are also different problems: a game can install successfully and later fail because of drivers, authentication, anti-cheat, DRM, or game-specific requirements.

Symptom-specific fixes
Install button unavailable
Verify the Ubisoft account, PC entitlement, edition, and platform. Check whether the title is already installed elsewhere and whether the purchase must be started through Steam or Epic. If every title has the same problem, restart Connect, update it, and reset its cache.
Download stuck at 0%
Check service status, disable VPN or proxy, test another network, check firewall and antivirus history, and confirm that both the destination drive and C: have space. Reset the cache after these basic checks.
Download stops near completion
Check temporary space, drive health, permissions, and security-software blocks. External or nearly full drives are common suspects. A repeated verification failure can indicate corrupted partial files.

Connect cannot create a folder
Test whether File Explorer can manually create and rename a file in the destination. If it cannot, choose a simple local folder on an internal drive, correct permissions, and check ransomware protection. Run Connect as administrator once only as a diagnostic.
Game missing from Library
Sign out and check the account email, purchase platform, subscription status, edition, and account link. Do not buy the game again until the original entitlement has been verified.
Connect wants to download an installed game again
Use the client’s locate or detect function, check whether the drive letter or library path changed, and preserve the existing folder. Reinstalling the client or deleting the game is not the first step.
Generic “try again later” error
Check for an outage, restart all relevant launchers and Windows, test the network without VPN or proxy, then check storage, security software, and cache. Record the exact message rather than relying on a paraphrase.
