Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Roblox defaults to a 60 FPS client cap, but supported Windows clients can raise the limit to 120, 144, or 240 FPS using the built-in Maximum Framerate setting. Choosing 240 FPS is only a higher ceiling—it cannot make hardware or an individual experience render that quickly.
If your FPS is exactly 60, check Roblox’s cap first. If the setting is already above 60, investigate Windows refresh rate, VSync, GPU-driver limits, third-party tools, and the performance of the specific experience.
The quickest fix
- Join a Roblox experience.
- Press Esc or click the Roblox logo.
- Open Settings.
- Find Maximum Framerate.
- Change Default or 60 FPS to 120 FPS, 144 FPS, or 240 FPS.
- Resume the experience. If the FPS does not change, leave and rejoin or restart Roblox.
Roblox introduced this control for supported Windows clients and recommends using it instead of an external FPS unlocker. Its documented choices are Default/60, 120, 144, and 240 FPS—not unlimited FPS. Roblox’s announcement explains the feature and its limits.
What an exact 60 FPS reading means
A perfectly steady 60 FPS usually points to an intentional limit: Roblox may still be set to Default or 60, Windows or the GPU driver may be synchronizing output at 60, or the display may be configured for 60 Hz.

Different patterns suggest different problems:
- Exactly 60 everywhere: likely a cap or synchronization limit.
- 55–60 FPS with fluctuations: the computer or experience may be struggling to render frames.
- Exactly 30 FPS: check power-saving, driver, display, or another separate limiter.
- More than 60 FPS, but motion looks like 60 Hz: Windows may still be using a 60 Hz refresh rate.
Roblox’s default client cap is 60 FPS, while supported Windows clients can raise the client maximum to 240 FPS. The server’s heartbeat is a separate matter and remains capped at 60; it is not the same as locally rendered FPS. Roblox’s creator documentation distinguishes client rendering from server simulation.
FPS and refresh rate are different
FPS measures how many frames Roblox renders. Hz measures how many times your display refreshes each second. A 144 Hz monitor does not automatically make Roblox render at 144 FPS, and Roblox can run at 60 FPS on a 144 Hz monitor.
A 60 Hz display cannot visibly present the full benefit of 120, 144, or 240 rendered frames per second. Higher FPS can improve responsiveness and motion clarity only when the display and the rest of the input chain can use it.
Check Windows’ refresh rate
- Open Start → Settings → System → Display.
- Select the correct monitor if more than one is connected.
- Open Advanced display.
- Under Choose a refresh rate, select the highest stable rate supported at your current resolution.
Available rates depend on the monitor, resolution, cable, port, adapter, dock, and laptop display mode. Microsoft documents this path and the related hardware restrictions in its Windows refresh-rate guide.

On compatible Windows 11 displays, Dynamic Refresh Rate can vary the refresh rate automatically. Microsoft notes that it can limit the maximum refresh rate of some games. If Roblox appears to run at a lower refresh rate, temporarily disable Dynamic Refresh Rate and test again.
If Roblox is set above 60 but still shows 60
When Maximum Framerate is 120, 144, or 240 but the counter remains exactly 60, check for another limiter:
- VSync in GPU-driver or graphics settings
- A driver-level maximum frame-rate setting
- NVIDIA, AMD, or other overlay controls
- Radeon Chill or equivalent adaptive frame-rate features
- RTSS/MSI Afterburner limits
- Laptop performance or battery-saving software
- Monitor game-mode utilities, docks, adapters, or remote-desktop software
These are possibilities, not guaranteed causes. Disable or adjust one control at a time, close overlays, and test Roblox again. A useful diagnosis is:
- Roblox cap 60, FPS 60: change Maximum Framerate.
- Roblox cap 240, FPS exactly 60: inspect refresh rate, VSync, and external caps.
- Roblox cap 240, FPS fluctuating at 45–59: investigate performance or the experience.
- FPS 144, display set to 60 Hz: correct Windows display settings.
Improve performance when the cap is not the problem
Lowering graphics cannot remove a strict 60 FPS cap, but it can help when rendering workload is limiting performance.

- Join an experience and open the Roblox menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Set Graphics Mode to Automatic, or choose Manual.
- With Manual selected, move Graphics Quality left to reduce visual workload.
Lower quality reduces detail; higher quality may expose a GPU bottleneck. If FPS rises after lowering the slider, the original problem was performance rather than the cap. Roblox explains these controls in its graphics-quality support article.
Also plug in a laptop, select a high-performance power mode, close unnecessary background programs and overlays, and ensure Roblox is using the intended discrete GPU where applicable. Test at least two experiences: a simple experience may exceed 60 FPS while a large one with effects, scripts, streamed assets, textures, or many players may not.
What to do if Maximum Framerate is missing
The retrieved first-party documentation confirms Windows support but does not establish universal availability on Mac, mobile, console, or every Roblox client variant. The menu may also vary because of client versions, feature rollouts, experiments, or temporary UI problems.
Try this conservative sequence:
- Leave the experience and reopen Roblox Settings.
- Fully close Roblox. Check Task Manager for any remaining Roblox process and end it if necessary.
- Restart Roblox and the computer.
- Install available Roblox and Windows updates.
- Test another experience.
- Reinstall Roblox using the official Roblox download path if the option remains absent.
A May 2026 Developer Forum report described the option disappearing for some Windows users and later returning, but that is community bug-report evidence rather than a guaranteed explanation. If the setting remains missing, contact Roblox Support and include your Windows version, Roblox client version if shown, GPU model, monitor refresh rate, whether the option is absent or locked to 60, and whether the issue affects every experience.

Should you use a Roblox FPS unlocker?
Usually, no. The official Maximum Framerate setting makes an external unlocker unnecessary when it is available. Third-party unlockers remove a cap; they do not create additional CPU or GPU performance. They may stop working after Roblox updates, trigger antivirus warnings, or introduce compatibility, trust, and account-safety concerns.
Roblox says its built-in control should be preferred because external tools rely on internal behavior that can change. A community unlocker’s own repository likewise says it removes the cap rather than boosting performance, but that is a third-party claim—not Roblox policy. See the project’s documentation if you need to understand what such tools claim, not as an endorsement.

“Lag” does not always mean low FPS. High ping is a network problem; local GPU or CPU load is a rendering problem; server simulation can affect responsiveness; and asset loading can cause stutter. A high FPS counter does not rule out network latency or uneven frame delivery.
Frame time is another useful measurement. At 60 FPS, each frame has about 16.67 milliseconds to render. At 120 FPS it is 8.33 ms, at 144 FPS 6.94 ms, and at 240 FPS 4.17 ms. Spikes can make a game feel uneven even when the average FPS looks acceptable. Roblox’s optional MicroProfiler can help advanced users investigate frame-time spikes, but ordinary troubleshooting does not require it.

When 240 FPS is worth selecting
Selecting 240 FPS makes sense only if your PC can approach that rate, your monitor supports a high refresh rate, and you value lower frame time or responsiveness. If your hardware produces 70–100 FPS, a 240-FPS cap does not force it to render faster. If your display is 60 Hz, the visible benefit will be limited even when the counter rises above 60.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Roblox stay at exactly 60 FPS after I select 240?
Verify Windows Advanced display is set above 60 Hz, then check VSync, GPU-driver limits, overlays, and third-party frame limiters. Also restart or rejoin Roblox after changing the setting.
Can lowering Roblox graphics unlock FPS?
No. Lowering Graphics Quality can improve performance when the computer is overloaded, but it cannot remove Roblox’s fixed frame cap.
Why does one Roblox experience run above 60 while another does not?
Experiences have different rendering and simulation workloads. A demanding experience may be performance-limited even when a simpler one exceeds 60 FPS.
Why does Roblox feel laggy at 60 FPS?
The cause may be a 60 Hz display, high ping, server simulation, input latency, or frame-time spikes rather than low client FPS.
