The answer depends on whether you’re playing ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA) or ARK: Survival Evolved (ASE), and on which cap-raising milestones you’ve completed.
First, identify which ARK you’re playing
ASA and ASE have different progression rules and level caps, so a number found for one edition may not apply to the other. The ARK Official Community Wiki’s leveling result reports a potential ASA maximum of 245 as of August 28, 2026; its separate Ascension result reports a maximum of 205 for ASE after the progression it lists. Those are edition- and progression-specific figures, not a guarantee that every character or server can reach them.
Why your character may have stopped leveling
You reached your character’s currently available cap
A character can stop gaining levels once it reaches the cap available under its edition and progression. The highest potential cap includes bonus levels, so it can be higher than the cap a character has unlocked so far.
You have not completed the cap-raising progression
The ARK Official Community Wiki’s ASA leveling result says 104 levels can be gained normally, with additional levels tied to listed Alpha boss victories, Explorer Note collections, Chibi levels, and DLC note collections. If you are below the reported potential maximum, check which of those milestones remain incomplete rather than assuming the XP system is broken.

Your edition uses different unlocks
Do not use ASA’s cap or unlock list to diagnose an ASE character. The wiki’s ASE Ascension result describes a separate progression that includes ascension, notes, Fjordur Runes, and Chibi levels.
Your Chibi may contribute bonus levels
The wiki’s Chibi-Gacha result says a Chibi pet gains levels from qualifying predator kills while equipped, and that Chibi levels increase the survivor cap. Check the rules for your edition before relying on this method.

How to narrow down the cause
- Confirm the edition. Check whether you launched ARK: Survival Ascended or ARK: Survival Evolved; use that edition’s cap and progression rules.
- Compare your level with the edition’s potential cap. For ASA, the wiki result reports 245 as the potential maximum as of August 28, 2026. For ASE, its Ascension result reports 205 after the progression it lists. These figures describe potential progression, not necessarily your character’s current cap.
- Review the relevant milestones. For ASA, check the listed Alpha boss defeats, Explorer Note collections, Chibi levels, and DLC note collections. For ASE, check its separate ascension, note, Fjordur Rune, and Chibi progression.
- Consider your game mode and settings. A custom server or single-player configuration may affect what applies, but the available information does not establish how your particular configuration changes the cap.
Why guides may show different maximum levels
Older guides may describe earlier caps, and some results cover ASE while others cover ASA. One historical ARK Community Crunch 271 announcement from 2021 called level 105 “pre-ascension”; that dated statement is not the current ASA maximum reported by the wiki. Match any level figure you see to the edition, date, and progression it describes.

A level that appears to stop increasing is consistent with reaching the character’s available cap, but the level by itself does not reveal which unlocks are missing. Without knowing your edition, game mode, server settings, current level, and completed progression, it is not possible to identify the exact cause for your character.
