1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe short answer is that the Wii U does not sign in with a Nintendo Account at all. It uses a Nintendo Network ID (NNID). A Nintendo Account can be linked to an NNID, but only through the Nintendo Account website, and only when several settings on both accounts agree. When the link fails, the cause is almost always a birth date or country mismatch, an NNID that is already tied to a different Nintendo Account, or an NNID set to block use on other devices.
Why the two account systems don’t match
Nintendo describes the NNID as the account used mainly on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, and the Nintendo Account as the account used mainly on Nintendo Switch, computers, and smart devices. Those are two separate account systems with separate passwords, so a Wii U user who expects to sign in with a Nintendo Account is looking for something the console does not offer.
| Item | Nintendo Network ID (NNID) | Nintendo Account |
|---|---|---|
| Main platforms (per Nintendo Support) | Wii U and Nintendo 3DS | Nintendo Switch, computers, and smart devices |
| Console sign-in on Wii U | Yes. This is the login the Wii U uses. | No. The Wii U does not accept it as its console login. |
| Where it is set up or linked | Registered on the Wii U under the user’s Mii and User Settings (per Nintendo Japan’s Wii U instructions) | Managed on the Nintendo Account website |
| Can be linked to the other system? | Yes, from the Nintendo Account website, if the checks below pass | Yes, to an NNID, using the NNID’s own credentials |
| EShop fund balance combining | Not possible between an NNID and a Nintendo Account since March 11, 2024 (per Nintendo Japan’s service notice) | Same as left |
Step 1: Confirm the Wii U user has an NNID
Before attempting any link, make sure the person who will use the Wii U has an NNID registered on the console. Nintendo Japan’s Wii U setup instructions place this registration under the user’s Mii and User Settings on the console. If the Wii U has no NNID for that user, there is nothing to link yet.
Step 2: Link the NNID from the Nintendo Account website
Linking is done on the web, not on the Wii U. Use this path on the Nintendo Account website:

#1 Best Overall
- Controllers are original OEM (not 3rd party)
- Tested and works well. Nice condition
- Sign in to the Nintendo Account you want to link to.
- Open User information.
- Select Linked apps and services.
- Select Edit.
- Check Nintendo Network ID.
- At the prompt, enter the NNID and that NNID’s password, then follow the remaining prompts.
Menu labels can differ by region. If your screen shows different wording, use your local Nintendo Support site to find the equivalent option.
Why the link fails
Nintendo Support lists five conditions that block or complicate linking. Check them in this order, since the first two are the most common mismatches.
Rank #2
- The Wii U GamePad breaks down barriers between you and your entertainment with a 6.2" 16:9 LCD touch screen, motion control system, front-facing camera, microphone, stereo speakers, rumble feature
- Console works with most games from the original Wii console, as well as the Wii Remote, Wii Remote Plus, Nunchuk controllers, Balance Board and many other Wii accessories, so you can continue to enjoy your favorite Wii features
- Play using a Wii Remote controller, the Wii U GamePad controller or a Wii U Pro Controller.
- Four USB 2.0 connector slots are included. The new console is backward compatible with Wii games and Wii accessories.
1. The date of birth does not match
The birth date saved on the NNID must match the birth date on the Nintendo Account. Nintendo’s troubleshooting article, Unable to Link a Nintendo Network ID to a Nintendo Account, states: “You cannot link accounts if the date of birth listed for the NNID does not match the date of birth for the Nintendo Account you’re trying to link to.” Compare both records exactly, including the day and month, before trying again.
2. The country does not match
The country-of-residence setting on the NNID must match the country on the Nintendo Account. A player who moved, or who created the NNID with a different region selected, can hit this even when the birth dates agree.
Rank #3
3. The NNID is already linked to another account
If the message reads “Another account has already been linked,” the NNID is tied to a different Nintendo Account. Sign in to that other account, unlink the NNID there, and then link it to the account you intended. You cannot link an NNID to two Nintendo Accounts, so the earlier link has to be removed first. If you no longer have access to the other account, contact Nintendo Support rather than retrying.
4. The NNID blocks off-device use
An NNID cannot be linked if it restricts use on other devices. On the Wii U, open the NNID settings and allow Usage from PCs and Other Devices. Once that setting is allowed, retry the link from the Nintendo Account website.

- Includes Replacement Wii U Console.
5. The NNID credentials are wrong or forgotten
The linking prompt asks for the NNID and its password. If you do not know the NNID, Nintendo says to select the Mii at the upper left of the Wii U menu to view it. If you have forgotten the NNID password, Nintendo Japan’s recovery guidance sends a temporary password to the email address registered to the NNID. If that email is no longer accessible, the password cannot be recovered this way, so contact Nintendo Support.

A link connects account identities. It does not merge funds. Nintendo Japan’s service notice states that as of March 11, 2024, it is no longer possible to combine the Nintendo eShop fund balance between a Nintendo Network ID and a Nintendo Account. Do not link accounts expecting balances to move from one to the other.

If the checks don’t solve the problem
If the birth date, country, existing link, off-device setting, and credentials all check out and the link still fails, contact Nintendo Support for your region. Have the exact error message ready, since the wording tells support which condition applies. The same error can appear for more than one cause, so the message is the most useful detail to supply.
