The most specific placement record available is a 2018 Bedrock bug report that lists dirt, coarse dirt, sand and gravel as accepted surfaces, and says kelp cannot be placed on most kinds of solid blocks. Soul sand is not named in that record, and none of the sources explain the underlying rule for it. If your goal is a soul sand bubble elevator, the workaround that appears in community guides is to build the water column with kelp first, then remove the bottom kelp and replace its support with soul sand. Exact behavior depends on your edition and version, and the evidence below is older than the current game.
What the sources establish
The table below lists each source behind this guidance, what it covers, and how current it is. Where a source does not give a date or version, the cell says so.
| Source | Edition or scope | Date | What it says | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mojang legacy bug tracker, MCPE-33747 | Legacy Bedrock; affected version 1.4.2.0, fix version 1.6.0 | Created 2018-05-24 | Kelp could be placed on dirt, coarse dirt, sand and gravel, but not on most solid blocks | Confirmed and resolved |
| Minecraft Wiki, “Kelp” | Community-maintained; current version compatibility not independently verified | Not stated | Placed by hand in water source blocks or downward-flowing water, not horizontally flowing water; kelp placed in downward-flowing water becomes a source block | Community reference |
| Minecraft Wiki, “Bubble Column” | Community-maintained | Not stated | Soul sand beneath source water generates an upward bubble column; columns stop at flowing water or waterlogged blocks | Community reference |
| Minecraft Wiki, “Tutorials/Elevators” | Community-maintained tutorial | Not stated | Use kelp through the water column, remove the lowest kelp, and replace the support block with soul sand | Tutorial workaround |
| Mojang Java bug tracker, MC-133817 | Java; several historical affected versions listed in the tracker | Created 2018-07-17 | Describes a kelp-and-slab waterlogging interaction | Unresolved |
What the placement record does and does not show
The 2018 Bedrock report is the only official placement record in this group, and it describes an older game. It does not explain why soul sand behaves differently from dirt or sand, and it does not establish how kelp placement works in current Java or Bedrock releases. Auldrick, identified in the report as a moderator, wrote: “Kelp cannot be placed on most kinds of solid blocks.” That is a historical statement about one reported Bedrock issue, not a rule that applies to every version.
- Kelp placement is restricted, and a solid block is not automatically a valid support for it.
- Soul sand is not listed among the accepted surfaces in the 2018 report.
- Soul sand under source water produces an upward bubble column, according to the Minecraft Wiki.
- The kelp-first elevator method is a community tutorial workaround, not an official mechanic.

- Dig a vertical channel of the height you need, with a clear column above the bottom block.
- Place kelp on a surface it accepts, such as dirt, coarse dirt, sand or gravel, inside a water column. Kelp placed in downward-flowing water becomes a source block, according to the Minecraft Wiki’s “Kelp” entry, so this turns the column into source water. Use source water blocks throughout if you prefer not to rely on kelp.
- Remove the lowest kelp along with its temporary support block.
- Place soul sand in the freed bottom position, directly beneath the source-water column.
- Check that bubbles rise through the column. If they do not, use the checks in the next section.
When the elevator does not produce bubbles
Most failures come from the water column rather than the soul sand itself. Work through these causes in order.
- Flowing water in the column. Bubble columns stop at flowing water, so replace any horizontally or downward-flowing segment with source water.
- Waterlogged blocks. A waterlogged block in the column also stops the bubbles. Remove or move it out of the shaft.
- Kelp and slab interactions in Java. The unresolved MC-133817 report describes waterlogging behavior with kelp and slabs. If your column includes slabs, move them out of the water path and test again.
- Edition or version mismatch. The placement evidence is from Bedrock 1.4.2.0 and 1.6.0 and from a 2018 Java tracker entry. Confirm whether you play Java or Bedrock and which version you run before applying version-specific advice.
If kelp will not place on the soul sand itself, do not force the build. Use the workaround above, where soul sand sits at the bottom of the finished water column rather than beneath kelp.
