Fortnite’s loading delay can happen at launch, sign-in, the lobby, or when joining a match, and the symptom alone does not identify the cause. First note where it stalls and whether an error appears, then check for updates and restart the game and device. After that, use the troubleshooting steps for your platform rather than assuming one fix applies to every long load.
First, identify where Fortnite is getting stuck
Note whether the delay occurs while starting Fortnite, signing in, reaching the lobby, or entering a match. Record any error message, and consider whether other online games are also slow or failing. That information helps distinguish a Fortnite-specific issue from a broader connection or console problem; a long loading screen alone is not enough to diagnose one cause.
Epic’s console guidance recommends checking for game and system updates, clearing the platform cache, reinstalling Fortnite if needed, and fully power cycling the console. These are troubleshooting steps, not a promise that any one step will fix every loading delay. See Epic’s console troubleshooting guide.
Try the basic fixes on any console
- Check for updates. Install available Fortnite updates and updates for your console’s system software. Nintendo also recommends updating Fortnite as an initial Switch troubleshooting step.
- Restart Fortnite. Close the game completely, then launch it again.
- Restart the console. Use the console’s restart or power-cycle procedure rather than only putting it into rest mode. Epic includes a full console power cycle in its general console troubleshooting guidance.
If Fortnite is stuck loading on Xbox
Epic has a specific guide for Xbox loading-screen problems. Its recommendations include restarting the modem or router, trying console troubleshooting such as clearing the Xbox cache and reinstalling Fortnite, and clearing the Xbox MAC address followed by a console restart. Follow the steps in Epic’s Xbox loading-screen guide in the order given there. These steps may help, but Epic does not say that any one of them is guaranteed to resolve every long load.

If Fortnite will not start on PS5
Check where the game is installed. PlayStation advises moving a game installed on USB extended storage to the PS5’s internal storage when troubleshooting a game that will not start. Its general game-start guidance also covers restarting the console, restoring licenses, reinstalling the game, updating system software, and clearing the cache or rebuilding the database. These are general PlayStation troubleshooting options, not a Fortnite-specific explanation for every slow loading screen. See PlayStation’s game-start troubleshooting guide.
If you play Fortnite on Nintendo Switch
Update Fortnite first. Nintendo’s cache-clearing and restart procedure is specifically associated with the connection error “An error occurred while connecting to Epic servers…” (ESP-DIST-001); it is not established as a fix for every slow load. Use the procedure if you see that error, following Nintendo’s Fortnite troubleshooting instructions.

When to check status or contact support
If the delay persists after the relevant platform steps, check Epic’s known-issues and status resources for a reported problem. For ongoing console technical issues that Epic’s troubleshooting does not resolve, Epic directs players to the relevant platform provider: PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo. Include your platform, the stage where loading stalls, any error text, and whether other online games are affected when you seek help.
