Why Can’t I Play a Game on PS5 When It Says Installed?

Installed game data does not guarantee access or a successful launch. Check the padlock, game ownership, disc, storage location, and download status to find the right fix.

“Installed” means the game’s data is on the console; it does not guarantee that your account can access it or that the game can start from its current disc or storage state. If you see a padlock, check the game’s license and the account that owns it. If there is no padlock, check whether it is a disc game, still downloading, or installed on USB extended storage. Follow the matching steps below before deleting and reinstalling anything.

Start with the symptom

What you see What to check first
A padlock beside the game Ownership, purchase or subscription access, Console Sharing and Offline Play, and licenses.
A disc game will not start Make sure the console has a disc drive and the game disc is inserted and readable.
A PS5 game is on USB extended storage Move the game data to console storage.
A download is pending or stuck Check Downloads/Uploads and resume or retry the download.
An error appears while launching or installing Use the exact error code to choose the relevant PlayStation troubleshooting steps.

If the game has a padlock, check access

A padlock points to an access or license issue; it does not mean the game data is missing. PlayStation says to check the account that bought the game, whether the transaction completed, and whether a PlayStation Plus title is still available through an active subscription. A game owned by another person on the console may depend on that owner’s sharing settings. See PlayStation’s game-download troubleshooting guide.

Confirm the owner and entitlement

  • Sign in with the account that purchased the game and check its transaction history.
  • For a PlayStation Plus game, verify the subscription is active and the title remains available through the relevant offering.
  • If another account owns the game, ask its owner to check Console Sharing and Offline Play on this PS5.

Check sharing and restore licenses

  1. On the account that owns the game, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. Enable it if appropriate. Sony says the feature is automatically allowed on the first PS5 used to sign in and can be enabled on only one PS5 at a time. If it is active on another console, the owner must change that activation. The feature lets other users of that PS5 play the owner’s downloaded purchases, including when offline. Details: Console Sharing and Offline Play on PS5.
  2. Restore licenses: go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses, select the game if prompted, and try launching it again. PlayStation says restoring licenses does not affect data. Instructions: Restore licenses on PlayStation consoles.

If the padlock remains, check PlayStation service status and install any available system software update. PlayStation also lists Safe Mode cache clearing and database rebuilding among later troubleshooting options; use its official troubleshooting steps rather than deleting unrelated data.

If it is a disc game, the disc is still required

Installing a disc game copies its data to the console, but does not remove the requirement to use the disc. Confirm that your PS5 has a disc drive and that the correct disc is inserted. Sony’s PS5 quick-start guide distinguishes disc games from downloaded games: a disc game requires the disc while its data installs, while a download becomes playable when it has downloaded and is ready.

For error CE-100005-6, PlayStation advises deleting and reinstalling a digital copy, or cleaning and reinserting a disc. For a disc, use a soft, clean, lint-free cloth intended for Blu-ray discs or DVDs, wiping from the center toward the edge. Follow Sony’s CE-100005-6 guidance. Cleaning can help with a dirty disc; it will not fix an account, license, subscription, sharing, or storage-location problem.

If a PS5 game is installed on USB extended storage

Move the game data to the PS5 console’s storage, then try launching it again. PlayStation’s launch troubleshooting recommends this for a PS5 game on USB extended storage. The supported step is to move the data; buying another drive is not the answer to this launch symptom. See PlayStation’s game-launch troubleshooting guide.

If the download is unfinished or stuck

Installed data can coexist with a pending download or update, so check Downloads/Uploads before treating the game as ready. For a stuck item, try Pause and then Resume. If that fails, cancel and delete the download, then start it again from Game Library. Also check PlayStation service status, available console storage, and system software. If the game is missing from the library, check transaction history, hidden games, sharing settings, and licenses using PlayStation’s download troubleshooting guide.

When the game still will not launch

Restart the PS5 and follow the launch steps relevant to your symptom: restore licenses for an access problem, reinstall only when the official instructions call for it, update system software, or use Safe Mode cache/database options. PlayStation’s launch troubleshooting guide lays out these steps.
