Facebook did not remove every game, but its gaming experience changed substantially. Meta discontinued the standalone Facebook Gaming mobile app on October 28, 2022, moving its gaming features into the main Facebook experience. Individual games may also have been shut down, removed by their developers, migrated to another platform, or disconnected from Facebook Login.
What actually changed?
The phrase “Facebook Gaming shut down” describes several different changes that are easy to confuse:
- The standalone Facebook Gaming app ended. Meta directed users to the main Facebook app instead. TechCrunch reported the October 28, 2022 shutdown.
- Facebook’s gaming features did not automatically disappear. Facebook still documents a Play games entry point, Gaming Video, gaming groups and other game-related features.
- Most individual games were third-party products. Their developers controlled the game servers, Facebook version, account system and future availability.
- Facebook Login is separate from the game itself. A game can still exist while its Facebook connection expires, changes or stops working.
Meta’s earlier gaming initiatives also included Instant Games and cloud-streamed games. Those announcements describe historical launches and rollouts, not a guarantee that the same catalog is available today. Instant Games began as lightweight experiences in Facebook and Messenger, while cloud gaming expanded Facebook’s gaming ambitions.
How to find games on Facebook now
Facebook’s documented desktop route is:
- Open Facebook in a desktop browser.
- Look in the left-hand menu for Play games.
- If it is not visible, select See more.
- Search for the title.
- Select Play game if the listing is available.
See Facebook’s instructions for finding and playing games. The exact menu can differ between desktop Facebook, the main mobile app, Facebook Lite, regions, accounts and interface rollouts. A missing shortcut does not by itself prove that Facebook permanently removed gaming.

If the menu is absent, try Facebook on desktop, check See more, search for the game’s official Page, and look for the developer’s official website or mobile app. Use an updated, supported browser. If the game loads inside a browser frame but fails to display, temporarily test with content blockers disabled; restore them afterward if they are not the cause.
Why one particular game may have disappeared
Facebook can work normally while a specific game vanishes. Common explanations include:
- The developer shut down the game or its servers.
- The developer removed the Facebook version.
- The title moved to a standalone website, Android app, iPhone or iPad app, or PC storefront.
- The Facebook version stopped being maintained or became incompatible with platform requirements.
- The game is unavailable in your region, on your device, or for your account.
- The developer’s Facebook Login integration expired, changed or was revoked.
Facebook distinguishes between connected games that are active, removed or expired, and notes that a developer can make an app unavailable to a user. Its guidance on inactive and unavailable apps also explains that third-party developers—not Facebook—usually control the game’s operation and stored progress.
This is why an old Facebook game may be impossible to restore even when its Page, screenshots or old articles still exist. A Page is not proof that the game’s servers remain online.

When Facebook Login stops working
If the game opens but Facebook Login loops, starts a new account, or no longer shows your friends and high scores, the problem may be the account connection rather than the game’s disappearance.
On desktop, Facebook documents this settings path:
- Select your profile picture in the top-right corner.
- Choose Settings & privacy, then Settings.
- Select Apps and websites.
- Under Preferences, find Apps, websites and games.
- Check whether the integration is disabled.
Facebook says that turning this integration off prevents Facebook Login for connected apps, games and websites. It may also remove connected games and cause the loss of information such as favorites or high scores that cannot be recovered. Read Facebook’s warning about disabling Apps, websites and games before changing the setting.
Do not routinely turn the integration off and on as a troubleshooting step. Inspect the setting first. Re-enabling it may restore permission to log in, but it cannot revive a game that the developer shut down or recover data the developer deleted.
Why Facebook no longer recognizes an older game
Facebook’s documentation describes a 90-day activity rule for some third-party connections. A game used recently may remain active, while an older connection can expire and require renewed permission. Facebook also acknowledges that access can sometimes stop even when its activity estimate is imperfect.

Possible symptoms include a Facebook Login button that does nothing, a new blank game account, missing friends or leaderboards, and messages saying that the app was removed or expired. These symptoms indicate an account-permission problem, not necessarily a shutdown.
Try signing in through the game’s official current version and look for instructions mentioning Facebook Login, account recovery, progress transfer or migration. Contact the developer before removing the connection. Facebook’s help pages explain that users control which information they share with connected games, while developers may retain information already stored even after access through Facebook is removed.
Why friends, gifts or leaderboards disappeared
A game can still load while its Facebook-specific social features no longer work. The developer may have stopped requesting Facebook friend permissions, migrated its social graph to its own account system, changed its Facebook integration, or lost access to information that the user did not authorize.
Playing the game and using Facebook features inside the game are therefore separate issues. A standalone version may preserve the title and some purchases while losing Facebook friends, gifts, leaderboards, invitations or social posts. Only the developer can confirm what data, if any, can be transferred.

Instant Games, cloud games and Messenger features
Instant Games were lightweight HTML5-style games playable in places such as Messenger, News Feed and Facebook’s gaming destinations. Cloud-streamed games were more demanding games delivered through streaming. Gaming Video is for watching streams and videos, not necessarily playing games. These are different systems and should not be treated as one catalog.
Messenger also has a Play together feature during some video calls. Meta’s current help documentation says it is still being developed and is not available in every area or on every device. Where supported, it can be accessed through Messenger on iPhone, Android or messenger.com. See Meta’s Play together guidance.
Likewise, you may still encounter Facebook Gaming Video or gaming groups even when a particular playable game has disappeared.

- Identify what disappeared: the standalone app, the Play games shortcut, one title, Facebook Login, or social features.
- Try desktop Facebook: use Play games or See more.
- Search the exact title and developer: check Facebook and the developer’s verified website.
- Check Apps and websites: confirm the game integration has not been disabled, but do not disconnect the game casually.
- Look for migration instructions: search the developer’s support pages for account transfer or progress recovery.
- Try the official standalone version: check the original publisher’s website, Google Play, Apple’s App Store or Steam.
- Contact the developer: Facebook may not be able to restore progress held by an independent game company.
- Report a Facebook problem only after narrowing the scope: if several games and Facebook menus fail, the issue may involve your account, browser, device or platform.
If the old game was discontinued
The safest alternative is the original developer’s verified website or official store listing. Search the exact title with the developer’s name and look for an official successor or migration notice.

Do not use unofficial APK sites, browser extensions claiming to restore old Facebook games, “game recovery” services asking for passwords, or sellers offering old accounts and saved progress. These may be scams or unsafe software. A cloud-gaming subscription also cannot guarantee access to a title whose original servers or Facebook version no longer exist.
Official destinations such as Google Play Games, Apple’s App Store and Steam can help you find legitimate replacements, but availability, pricing, Facebook Login support and progress transfer are title-specific.
The bottom line
Facebook did not eliminate all gaming, but it retired the separate Facebook Gaming app and made gaming less prominent inside the main Facebook experience. If one game is missing, the most likely explanation is not that your entire Facebook account stopped working: the developer may have shut down, removed or migrated the game, or its Facebook Login connection may have expired. Start with desktop Facebook’s Play games path, check the connection without disconnecting it, and use only the game developer’s official recovery or replacement options.
