Attach or extend the mic, turn off physical mute, select the correct input in Windows, allow microphone permissions, then choose the Kraken inside Discord or your game. Razer Synapse is optional for basic microphone use and only exposes advanced controls on supported models.
1. Identify your Razer Kraken connection
Check the headset label, cable, and microphone design before changing settings. Kraken instructions vary by model, including the Kraken X, V3, V4, Ultimate, Tournament Edition, Pro, and other variants.
- USB-A or USB-C cable: follow the USB setup below.
- Combined 3.5 mm headset plug: follow the analog setup.
- USB wireless receiver: follow the wireless setup.
- Microphone design: determine whether it retracts into the earcup, detaches, plugs into a separate socket, or is permanently attached.
A 3.5 mm Kraken may appear in Windows under the computer’s sound hardware rather than under the name “Razer Kraken.” Not every Kraken model is supported by Synapse, and supported models do not necessarily offer the same microphone controls.
2. Prepare the microphone
- Insert a detachable microphone completely into its socket. A partly inserted plug can allow headphone audio while preventing microphone input.
- Extend a retractable microphone fully.
- Check the physical mute button or toggle and place it in the unmuted position. Controls differ by model. On the documented Kraken X layout, the mic is muted when the button is not pressed or when the red portion is visible; do not assume that indicator applies to every Kraken.
- Position the microphone close to your mouth. Razer advises pointing the microphone diaphragm toward your mouth and keeping its air vent facing away from your mouth. See Razer’s microphone guidance.
- Inspect the microphone plug, headset port, and cable for dirt or debris. Do not force a connector.
3. Set up a USB Razer Kraken in Windows 11
Connect it directly
Plug the headset directly into the computer rather than into a USB hub or dock while setting it up. Razer specifically recommends a direct connection for wired USB headsets. Wait for Windows to detect the device.

Select it as the Windows input
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Input, select the Razer Kraken microphone. The precise name depends on the model.
- Speak normally and watch the input meter.
- Open the selected microphone’s test controls, start a test, speak, stop the test, and play the sample back. Microsoft documents this process in its Windows microphone troubleshooting guide.
- Adjust input volume gradually if the recording is too quiet or clips. There is no universally correct percentage.
Set the default recording device if necessary
If Windows keeps choosing a laptop microphone, webcam, or controller, open Settings > System > Sound and select the Kraken under Input. You can also use the classic control panel:
- Open Windows Sound settings.
- Select Sound Control Panel under related settings.
- Open the Recording tab.
- Right-click the Kraken or relevant microphone device.
- Select Set as Default Device.
This changes Windows’ default but does not necessarily override an application’s own microphone choice.
4. Allow microphone access in Windows
A correctly connected microphone can remain silent if Windows privacy access is disabled.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access.
- Turn on Let apps access your microphone.
- Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone when using Discord, a game, a browser, Zoom, or another traditional desktop program.
Desktop applications may not appear as individually controllable entries. The desktop-app access switch is therefore important even when the program is not listed separately.

5. Set up a 3.5 mm Razer Kraken
Plug a combined 3.5 mm headset connector into a compatible headset jack. Push it in firmly, because a partially inserted plug can provide headphone audio without microphone input. Razer’s connection guidance is available in its Kraken support documentation.
Laptop, phone, or controller
A device with a compatible combined headset jack can usually accept both headphone and microphone signals through the single plug. The microphone may appear as a generic input device supplied by the laptop, phone, or controller rather than as a named Kraken device.
Desktop with separate ports
Many desktop computers have separate headphone and microphone jacks. In that case, use the headset splitter supplied with the headset, or a standards-compatible headset splitter, and connect the headphone and microphone plugs to their matching ports.
If the audio works but the mic does not, check the splitter first. Other possibilities include using the wrong desktop jack, an incompatible splitter, a damaged connector, or a sound port that does not support microphone input. Basic analog microphone operation normally does not require Synapse.

6. Set up a wireless Kraken
- Connect the headset’s supplied USB wireless receiver directly to the computer during initial setup.
- Power on and, if necessary, charge the headset.
- Keep the headset within its practical supported range.
- Temporarily move the receiver away from possible sources of wireless interference if the microphone cuts in and out.
- Open Settings > System > Sound and select the wireless Kraken under Input.
- Select the same device inside your voice-chat application.
If the headset is not detected, test another direct USB port and confirm that the receiver is the one supplied for that model. Razer’s general Kraken guidance also recommends checking range and wireless interference.
7. Configure the mic in Razer Synapse
Synapse is not required for basic microphone input in every Kraken setup. It is useful for supported USB and wireless models when you want microphone processing, sidetone, EQ, or other device controls.
Synapse 4
For a compatible device:
- Open Razer Synapse 4.
- Select the Kraken in the device tab.
- Open MIC.
- Adjust microphone volume and use microphone preview if your model provides it.
- Test enhancements one at a time. Supported models may offer vocal clarity, noise cancellation, microphone EQ, volume normalization, or related controls.
- Save or apply the settings, then retest in Windows and your target app.
The exact controls depend on the model and connection. The Kraken V4 master guide, for example, documents microphone volume, preview, enhancements, EQ, noise cancellation, and sidetone controls.
Turn off hearing your own voice
If you hear yourself intentionally through the headset, open Razer Device Tab > MIC > MIC MONITORING (SIDETONE) in Synapse 4 and disable it or lower its level. Razer documents this path in its sidetone support article.

Sidetone is not the same as a microphone fault. Also check Windows’ Listen to this device option, voice-chat echo settings, and speaker feedback if the sound is delayed or echoed.
What about Synapse 3?
Older instructions may show AUDIO > MIC, which is the legacy Synapse 3 path. Razer says Synapse 3 updates and cloud services ended on February 3, 2026. Existing installed devices may remain configurable, but Razer directs users toward Synapse 4 for continued customization after migration or device removal. Do not install Synapse merely to make a basic analog microphone work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Select the microphone inside Discord, games, and other apps
Windows and an application can use different input devices. Always check the app separately:
- Open the program’s audio, voice, or recording settings.
- Find Input Device, Microphone, or Recording Device.
- Select the Kraken explicitly instead of leaving the setting on Default.
- Speak and watch the application’s input meter.
- Run its microphone test if available.
- Check the app’s own mute button, input volume, and sensitivity controls.
Discord
Open User Settings > Voice & Video, choose the Kraken under Input Device, and use Discord’s microphone test. Adjust input sensitivity or input volume only after confirming that the correct device is selected. If the mic works in Windows but not Discord, check Discord’s mute state and Windows desktop-app microphone permission before changing Synapse settings.

9. Use sensible microphone settings
Start with a clean baseline rather than copying a fixed volume percentage:
- Set input volume high enough for normal speech but low enough to avoid clipping.
- Keep the mic close to your mouth without touching it.
- Disable enhancements if your voice sounds metallic, distorted, muffled, choppy, or overly sensitive.
- Add noise suppression only when background noise is actually a problem.
- Use voice gate cautiously. An aggressive threshold can remove quiet speech or cut off word endings.
- Use sidetone only to monitor yourself; it cannot repair an undetected microphone.
- Avoid stacking several aggressive processors, such as Synapse noise cancellation, Discord suppression, and third-party voice software, until the basic signal is working.
Razer recommends disabling audio enhancements while diagnosing distorted, muffled, buzzing, static, or overly sensitive microphone behavior.
10. Test the mic before joining a call or game
- The physical mute control is off.
- The mic is fully attached or extended.
- Windows’ input meter responds to your voice.
- A short Windows test recording plays back clearly.
- There is no clipping, buzzing, static, or unexpected echo.
- The correct input is selected inside Discord, the game, Zoom, or another app.
- Only the intended monitoring feature is enabled.
11. Fix common Razer Kraken microphone problems
| Symptom | Checks to make |
|---|---|
| Mic is completely silent | Check physical mute, microphone attachment, Windows permissions, input selection, app mute, and the correct splitter. |
| Headset audio works but mic does not | Check the desktop splitter, microphone jack, permissions, and whether Windows selected a different input. |
| Mic is too quiet | Move it closer, verify diaphragm orientation, and raise Windows or app input volume gradually. |
| Voice is distorted, buzzing, or static-filled | Disable enhancements, bypass a USB hub, clean and reseat connectors, try another USB port, and inspect the cable or jack. |
| Voice cuts in and out | Lower an aggressive voice gate, review app sensitivity, reseat a loose connector, and check wireless interference. |
| You hear your own voice | Disable Synapse sidetone, Windows device monitoring, or app echo. Distinguish intentional sidetone from delayed feedback. |
| Kraken is absent from Synapse | The model may not support Synapse controls, may be analog, may require a different Synapse version, or may not be detected correctly. |
| Mic works in Windows but not in an app | Select the Kraken explicitly in the app and check its mute, sensitivity, and permission settings. |
| Mic works on one device but not another | Compare jack compatibility, splitter wiring, operating-system selection, and device-specific limitations. |
12. If the mic is not detected at all
Use this escalation order so you can identify whether the fault is physical, Windows-related, app-related, or caused by software processing:
- Check mute and microphone attachment.
- Reconnect the headset directly to the computer.
- Try another direct USB port for a USB model.
- Check Windows microphone permissions.
- Check the Windows input list.
- Check the application’s input selection.
- Disable microphone enhancements.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the headset on another compatible device.
If the mic fails on multiple compatible devices after these checks, suspect a damaged cable, port, receiver, microphone, or headset. Contact Razer support or pursue warranty service rather than immediately changing registry settings or reinstalling several unrelated audio programs.
Windows version note
These menu paths target current Windows 11 wording, which can vary slightly between Windows builds. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so Windows 11 is the current recommended Windows reference for this guide. See Microsoft’s sound troubleshooting documentation for platform-level changes.
