If Minecraft Java Edition won’t launch after you bought it, first check which Microsoft account owns the game. The Launcher, Microsoft Store, or Xbox app may be signed into a different account. Confirm the purchase and account before buying anything again.
Check which Microsoft account bought the game
- Look for the Minecraft purchase confirmation email and note the Microsoft account address it was sent to.
- Sign in to that Microsoft account and check its Order History.
Minecraft Help says a missing Play button is likely to mean the Launcher is signed into an account that does not own Minecraft. Its Play Button Not Appearing guidance identifies the account mismatch as a common cause.

Sign in to the account with the license in each PC app
Check the account shown in the Minecraft Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app. Sign out of any app using another account, then sign back in with the Microsoft account that owns the game. Minecraft lists a Microsoft account with a Java Edition purchase, or the account subscribed to Game Pass for PC, as eligible to sign in to the Launcher. See its Launcher sign-in guidance.
Check whether that account owns Java Edition
Open the Minecraft Launcher or Microsoft Store while signed into the purchasing account and find the PC edition. Minecraft says Play or Install means that account owns the edition; Buy Now means it does not. Java and Bedrock for PC have been sold together as a bundle since June 7, 2022, but the ownership indicator is the practical way to check what the account can access. If you use Game Pass, verify the subscription account
Game Pass access is tied to the account with the active PC subscription. Check that the Launcher and Xbox app are signed in to that subscribed account and that the subscription is active. Minecraft also recommends checking subscription status when Bedrock is stuck in trial mode; its Launcher troubleshooting page explains eligible sign-ins.
If the purchase does not appear in Order History
A payment confirmation screen alone does not establish that the purchase completed. Minecraft transaction guidance says a successful purchase confirmation email should include a transaction ID. Check the payment account and order history; if there is no confirmation email or order, the transaction may not have completed. Follow the guidance in I Can’t See My Purchase before retrying or contacting the seller.

If you still cannot launch the game
- In the Launcher, sign out and sign back in with the account that owns the license.
- If the problem continues, reinstall the Minecraft Launcher. Minecraft recommends this for some Launcher problems; see its Play button troubleshooting.
- If you are on Windows and Bedrock opens only in trial mode, use Windows’ app settings to repair the Launcher. Minecraft’s instructions are in its Launcher troubleshooting guidance.
If you bought Minecraft with a Mojang account
Mojang account migration ended on December 18, 2023, and Minecraft says the migration grace period has concluded. Its current guidance directs players who still need Java access to purchase Java Edition with a Microsoft account; it does not promise recovery or migration help for an un-migrated Mojang account. Java and Bedrock multiplayer are edition-specific. A Java player can join Java-hosted games, but a Bedrock world, server, Realm, or LAN game requires Bedrock. Owning Java alone does not make a player compatible with a Bedrock-hosted game. See Minecraft’s edition differences guidance.
