Xbox digital game purchases are not refunded automatically. Microsoft treats digital goods as non-refundable unless the offer terms or your local consumer law make you eligible, so a refund is something you may be able to request, not something you are entitled to on demand. The exact Xbox eligibility thresholds are not stated in a readable official source as of October 2026, which is why a denial can feel arbitrary. The rest of this guide explains the rules that are documented, the common reasons requests fail, and what to do next.
Why digital game purchases are non-refundable by default
Xbox’s web purchase terms state: “All purchases of Digital Products on the Service are final and non-refundable.” The same terms say this policy applies in addition to statutory withdrawal rights and does not affect those rights. They also describe correcting an incorrect or excessive charge, which is a separate route from a change-of-mind request.
Microsoft’s general support guidance is more hopeful in tone: “If you purchased a game or app from Microsoft, you may be able to request a refund.” The word “may” matters. Eligibility depends on the offer terms and applicable law, and Microsoft routes Xbox game and app refund requests to its digital-game request process rather than granting refunds through a standard checkout.
What the refund rules say, and what they do not
You will often see two specifics repeated online: a 14-day request window and a limit on playtime. Both trace back to a Microsoft Community answer dated January 6, 2023, in which the poster quotes Xbox Support as saying requests are made within 14 days of the purchase date and generally concern games without a significant amount of play time. The same answer notes that submitting a request does not guarantee a refund.

- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.
- SHARE BUTTON: Seamlessly capture and share content such as screenshots, recordings, and more with the new Share button.
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
That is historical, secondhand wording. It is not a current, official Xbox threshold, and it does not establish a safe playtime cap. Do not assume a game qualifies because you have played it for only a short time, and do not assume it is excluded because you are past 14 days; check the request route itself for the terms that apply to your purchase.
The same forum post also quotes a denial message: “Our refund policy doesn’t allow refunds for digital game products that have been played or consumed.” Treat that as one reported example of how a denial can be worded, not as confirmed current universal policy.

Why a request fails or the option is missing
A denial or a missing refund button usually comes down to one of four issues. Work through them in order before assuming the decision is final.
- The offer terms or local law do not cover the purchase. Promotional bundles, subscription-included titles and some third-party sales can carry their own conditions. Statutory rights in your country can also differ from Microsoft’s general wording.
- The Xbox-specific criteria are not met. The most likely reasons are timing and how much the game has been played or used, but the current exact criteria are not published in a readable form.
- Online returns are not available in your market. Microsoft states that online returns are not available in all markets. If the request option is absent, that is the most likely explanation.
- The purchase is on a different account. The request flow requires signing in and selecting the relevant item in your order history, so a purchase made on a family member’s or an older Microsoft account will not appear under the account you are using.
A denial message or order-history note may name a more specific reason. Use that wording as your starting point rather than these general categories.

How to submit a refund request
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that made the purchase. Check the account on the Xbox console, the Xbox website or the Microsoft account page if you are unsure which one was used.
- Open the Xbox digital-game refund request route linked from Microsoft Support’s refund guidance.
- Select the transaction if it is listed. If it is not listed, note that the purchase may be on a different account or in a market without online returns.
- Choose the reason for the request and submit it.
- Save the confirmation or denial message. If you need to escalate, that record shows what you asked and what was decided.
If the request control is missing entirely, Microsoft directs customers in markets without online returns to contact Sales support.

If you see a charge you do not recognize, do not treat it as a refund request. Microsoft points users to Manage your payments to investigate the transaction. This route is for identifying what was billed and why; it is separate from a change-of-mind return, and an unrecognized charge may be corrected under the incorrect-charge provision in the web purchase terms.

Timing and how the money comes back
Microsoft’s general Microsoft Store guidance says an approved refund is generally processed within 3 to 5 business days and applied to the original payment option. That is a general estimate for Microsoft Store purchases, not an Xbox-specific guarantee, so allow for variation depending on your bank or payment provider.
Regional differences that change the answer
- Online returns: not available in all markets. Where they are not, contact Sales support.
- Consumer law: Microsoft’s support text includes an Australia-specific consumer-law caveat. Other countries and states can also give statutory rights that override the general digital-goods rule, so check your local consumer protection guidance.
Because the detailed Xbox thresholds are not stated in a readable official source, a request in one country may be handled differently from the same request in another.
