Discord usually cannot hear you because it is using the wrong microphone, lacks permission to access it, or is not set to transmit in the way you expect. Check Discord’s microphone test first, then work through mute state, input device, input mode, permissions, and the physical connection. Buying a new microphone should be one of the last steps, not the first.
Discord usually cannot be heard because it is not receiving the microphone you think it is, the microphone is blocked by a permission or mute setting, or Discord is waiting for Push to Talk. Start with Discord’s microphone test before buying equipment or reinstalling the app. If the test cannot detect your voice, the problem is between the microphone and Discord; if the test works but other people still cannot hear you, investigate mute states, channel permissions, input mode, and the call or server.

Fix it in this order
- Check that you are not locally muted, server-muted, or deafened.
- Open Discord’s voice settings.
- Select the actual microphone instead of relying on Default.
- Confirm the correct Input Mode: Voice Activity or Push to Talk.
- Run Discord’s microphone test.
- Check operating-system or browser microphone permissions.
- Reconnect the headset or microphone, try another port, and test it in another app.
- Only then try Discord resets, driver checks, or replacement hardware.
1. Check mute, deafen, and server restrictions
Look at the microphone icon in Discord’s voice controls. If it has a slash through it, click it to unmute. Also check the physical mute button or switch on the headset, microphone, inline cable, or controller.

A server moderator may have server-muted you, or the channel may not give you the Connect and Speak permissions required for voice participation. Deafening normally affects what you hear, not whether your microphone signal exists, but it can make a voice problem confusing because the voice controls and channel indicators change together. Check both your own controls and the indicators beside your username.
2. Open Discord’s Voice settings
On Discord for desktop or in a browser, select the gear icon beside your username, then open User Settings > Voice & Video. On mobile, open the avatar menu, choose User Settings, and select Voice. Discord’s labels can change slightly between platforms and app versions, but the relevant controls are the microphone input, input mode, permissions, and microphone test.
3. Select the microphone you are actually using
In Input Device, choose the specific microphone you intend to use:

- the microphone built into a USB or wireless headset;
- a standalone USB microphone;
- a webcam microphone;
- a laptop’s built-in microphone; or
- a microphone connected through an audio interface or controller.
Do not assume that Default points to the right device. Windows, macOS, a browser, and Discord can each have different default-input choices. This is especially common after connecting a webcam, Bluetooth headset, USB microphone, game controller, or monitor with an audio device.
After choosing the device, speak normally and watch Discord’s input indicator. If the indicator never moves, Discord is not receiving a usable signal from that selection. Check the input volume or sensitivity controls as well; an input level set extremely low can make a working microphone appear silent.
4. Check Input Mode: Voice Activity versus Push to Talk
Voice Activity transmits when Discord detects speech. It is the mode most people expect when they want an open microphone. Push to Talk transmits only while its configured key or control is held down.

If Push to Talk is selected accidentally, other people will hear nothing until you press the activation key. Confirm the assigned key and test it while watching Discord’s microphone indicator. For a quick diagnostic, switch temporarily to Voice Activity. If people can hear you then, the microphone itself is probably working and the issue is the Push to Talk binding or activation method.

If the threshold is too high, normal speech may not trigger transmission. Avoid setting it so low that keyboard, fan, or game audio constantly opens the microphone.
5. Run Discord’s Mic Test
Use the microphone test in User Settings > Voice & Video. Discord plays back the signal captured from the selected input through the selected output device.
- No test signal: investigate permissions, the selected device, mute switches, connections, drivers, and hardware.
- A clear test signal, but nobody hears you: check local or server mute status, Push to Talk, channel permissions, and whether the issue occurs in one call or everywhere.
- A faint, clipped, muffled, or intermittent signal: check input level, the physical connection, noise suppression, and the microphone itself.
This test separates a microphone-capture problem from a listener-volume problem. If Discord cannot detect your voice during the test, raising another person’s volume or changing your output device will not fix the microphone.
6. Allow microphone access
A microphone can work in another application while Discord is blocked. Check the privacy settings for the platform you are using.
Windows
Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and allow microphone access for the device and apps. Make sure desktop-app access is enabled if you use the Discord desktop application. Close and reopen Discord after changing the permission.

macOS
Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone, enable access for Discord, and restart Discord. If you use Discord in a browser, enable the browser rather than only the desktop app.
Discord in a browser
When the browser asks to use your microphone, choose Allow. If you previously blocked it, open the permissions for the Discord site from the browser’s address-bar controls and change Microphone to Allow. Reload Discord after changing the setting. Also check that another browser tab or application is not exclusively using the microphone.
iPhone and Android
Open the phone’s app permissions, select Discord, and allow microphone access. Update both Discord and the operating system. On mobile, also check the phone’s mute state, media or call volume, battery-saver restrictions, and whether the problem changes between Wi-Fi and mobile data. Battery-saving behavior can affect voice activity when Discord is in the background.
7. Check the physical microphone and connection
If Discord’s Mic Test is silent, inspect the hardware before changing advanced settings:
- Push the USB plug fully into the computer and try a different USB port.
- For a 3.5mm headset, reseat the plug and confirm it is in the microphone-compatible jack or correct adapter.
- For Bluetooth equipment, confirm that the headset is connected as an active input device rather than only as an output device.
- Check the headset’s physical mute switch and any inline remote.
- Disconnect other microphones temporarily so Discord cannot select the wrong one.
- Test the microphone in the operating system’s sound recorder, a game, or another voice app.
If it fails in every application, the likely causes are the connection, adapter, driver, or hardware. If it works elsewhere but not in Discord, return to Discord’s selected input device and permission settings.
8. Test Krisp noise suppression if your voice is being filtered
Krisp is intended to remove background noise, but it is not a fix for a microphone that Discord cannot detect. In a quiet room, noise suppression can sometimes make speech sound reduced or unnatural. Discord also notes that Krisp may turn itself off when CPU usage is high.

If people hear a faint, clipped, or oddly filtered voice rather than complete silence, test the Krisp setting both on and off. Compare the Mic Test result after each change. If the microphone is missing entirely, solve device selection and permission problems first.
9. Reset Discord’s voice settings and audio subsystem
These are secondary steps, not the best starting point. First record your current input and output selections so you can restore them if necessary.
- In User Settings > Voice & Video, use the option to Reset Voice Settings, if it is available.
- Re-select the intended Input Device and Output Device.
- Restart Discord completely, not just the voice channel. On desktop, quit it from the system tray or menu bar if it remains running there.
- On desktop, try the alternate Audio Subsystem, usually Standard or Legacy, then restart Discord if prompted.
- Restart the computer or phone and test again.
On some Windows systems, Discord’s official troubleshooting path also includes trying the application as administrator. Treat that as a diagnostic step rather than a permanent requirement, and do not give Discord elevated access unless you understand why it is needed.
10. Check drivers on Windows
Keep Windows and the audio or headset drivers current, particularly if the device is missing from Windows or stopped working after an update. Use Windows’ native device and driver tools first: inspect the microphone in Settings > System > Sound and Device Manager, check for disabled devices, and install updates supplied by Windows or the hardware manufacturer.
A third-party driver-maintenance utility is not required by Discord and should not be the first response. If Windows still fails to recognize the microphone after native permission, device, connection, and driver checks, a reputable driver-maintenance tool may be an optional next step for experienced Windows users. Verify its publisher, scan results, restore options, and current terms before installing anything.

Replace or borrow a known-good microphone only after the existing device fails in multiple applications, has a damaged cable or connector, has an unreliable mute switch, or is not recognized after the software checks above. A replacement is useful as a controlled test, but buying one is not a universal Discord fix.

For a simple PC setup, a USB gaming headset with microphone can reduce the number of separate cables and input choices. A standalone USB microphone may provide a better desk setup, while a replacement cable or adapter may be enough for a headset with a detachable connection. Check operating-system compatibility, USB or 3.5mm requirements, and whether the device exposes a distinct microphone input before purchasing.
If people still cannot hear you
After completing the checks, collect this information before contacting Discord Support:
- whether you use Discord desktop, browser, iPhone, or Android;
- your operating-system version;
- the exact headset, microphone, adapter, or audio interface;
- the selected Input Device and Input Mode;
- whether Discord’s Mic Test detects your voice;
- whether the problem affects every server or only one channel;
- whether the microphone works in another application; and
- screenshots of the relevant Voice & Video settings and any available debug information.
That evidence tells support whether the failure is likely to be a device-recognition problem, a permission issue, a Discord client setting, a server restriction, or a connection problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Discord may be using a different input device, or its microphone permission may be blocked even though another app has access. Open User Settings > Voice & Video, select the exact microphone, check the Input Mode, and allow microphone access for Discord or your browser.
Why can people hear me in other apps but not Discord?
