Why Casual Collective Became Kixeye: Battle Pirates and the 2011 Pivot to “Hardcore” Social Games

Casual Collective’s 2011 rebrand as Kixeye announced a shift toward involved social strategy games. Battle Pirates brought that vision to Facebook with base building, fleet customization, exploration, and real-time combat.

On April 28, 2011, Casual Collective rebranded as Kixeye and launched Battle Pirates on Facebook. The change signaled a move toward more involved strategy games for social platforms: Kixeye wanted to attract players who valued traditional mechanics and competition, rather than define its work as casual gaming. Battle Pirates made that ambition concrete with island bases, customizable fleets, exploration, and real-time combat.

What changed when Casual Collective became Kixeye?

The company changed its identity and publicly repositioned its games on April 28, 2011. Contemporary reports covered the Kixeye rebrand and the Facebook launch of Battle Pirates on the same day; the name change and game launch were related events, but not the same thing. TechCrunch’s report described the game and the company’s new direction, while GamesBeat’s coverage explained the positioning behind dropping “Casual” from the company name.

Kixeye’s stated bet was that Facebook could support games with more traditional, demanding mechanics and competitive strategy. In GamesBeat’s April 28, 2011 account, CEO Will Harbin said, “We abandoned our original direction,” and added, “But we have always focused on real games with real game mechanics.” The same report quoted him explaining that the company saw its strengths in entertaining “hardcore gamers who spend hours upon hours with a title.” These are historical statements about the 2011 repositioning, not evidence of Kixeye’s current corporate strategy.

What made Battle Pirates a “hardcore” social game?

“Hardcore” was Kixeye’s market framing, not a formal genre label. The distinction was about the kind of play the company wanted to offer on a social platform: persistent strategy and competition rather than a brief, low-commitment diversion. Battle Pirates joined several mechanics that made that aim visible.

Plunder A Pirate's Life - Family Board Game for Adults and Kids
  • STRATEGY GAME: Adventure awaits any swashbuckler brave enough to command a fleet. Conquer islands to gain valuable resources. Build and upgrade your ships with masts and cannons. Wage war against rival captains and rule the seas.
  • EASY TO LEARN: The thematic and intuitive gameplay allows new players to quickly grasp the rules and will have you helming your battleship through the Caribbean in no time. The rulebook also contains an overview guide for easy understanding.
  • HIGH REPLAYABILITY: The game board is created by combining six different double-sided ocean tiles which create a unique map configuration each time you play. You’ll never play the same map twice, encouraging you to explore new strategies.
  • GIFTS: This modern classic appeals to both beginners and veteran gamers. Fun for adults, couples, families, kids, teens, high school and college students. Perfect for birthday gifts and Christmas gifts. A game night crowd pleaser.
  • NUMBER OF PLAYERS AND AVERAGE PLAYTIME: This pirate game is designed for 2 to 6 players, plus a team play option. Average playtime is 20 minutes per player. There is no player elimination, so every captain fights to the very end.
  • Base building and defense: Players developed an island base, building up a position they would need to protect.
  • Fleet construction: Players gathered resources and built and customized ships, tying progression to an evolving naval force.
  • Exploration: The game’s world map gave players a larger setting to investigate beyond their base.
  • Player combat: Real-time player-versus-player battles made competition part of the core loop, alongside encounters with computer-controlled opponents.

In 2014, a KIXEYE employee’s GDC presentation described Battle Pirates as a massively multiplayer real-time strategy game with tower-defense elements, real-time PvP and PvE combat, an extensive world map, and deep base and fleet customization. That presentation documents the game’s design at that time; it should not be read as a guarantee that every feature or system remains unchanged today. The GDC presentation provides that dated design description.

How did Kixeye explain the shift?

The rebrand was a bid to make the company’s intended audience clearer. In the AOL Games report reproduced by Yahoo Finance on April 28, 2011, Harbin put the aim succinctly: “We’re focused on making games with traditional game mechanics and gameplay.” The reproduced report supports the company’s stated rationale, but a company’s positioning is not proof that the broader market adopted the same direction.
