CD PROJEKT S.A. issued a DMCA complaint against Luke Ross’s unofficial Cyberpunk 2077 VR conversion because access was tied to a paid Patreon subscription. Patreon removed the affected content; CD PROJEKT did not personally erase the mod from the internet. The company said the mod could return if it were free, but Ross did not restore it then. In March 2026, much of his wider R.E.A.L. VR suite became free while Cyberpunk 2077 remained excluded.
What was removed—and by whom?
The affected project was Luke Ross’s R.E.A.L. VR conversion module for Cyberpunk 2077, an unofficial way to play the PC game in VR. It was not an official CD PROJEKT VR mode or a standard Nexus Mods release. Ross created the R.E.A.L. framework, which adapted selected flat-screen games for VR.
In January 2026, CD PROJEKT S.A. sent a DMCA notice concerning the module. Ross described the notice as alleging infringement of the company’s rights and citing its fan-content rules, including the paid-access arrangement and trademark concerns. Patreon then removed the Cyberpunk-related content. Ross—not CD PROJEKT or Patreon—controlled whether to distribute his work elsewhere or offer it for free. His account of the notice and dispute is in his Patreon post.
A DMCA notice is a rights-holder complaint that can prompt a platform to remove material; it is not a court ruling. The available reporting documents the notice and platform action, not a judgment that Ross was liable or that a court found the mod infringing.

Why did CD PROJEKT object to the Patreon arrangement?
CD PROJEKT RED’s Fan Content Guidelines distinguish optional support from paid access. They allow reasonable donations, but prohibit charging users for fan content or putting it behind a paywall, including access restricted to paying subscribers. The guidelines also permit game mods subject to the relevant game EULA and require creators to contact the company in advance for certain uses, such as making a mod a standalone product or using CD PROJEKT content in another game or service.
That is the company’s published policy, not a definitive judicial ruling on the legality of every paid game mod. The issue here was not simply that Ross accepted support: users had to subscribe to obtain the mods. That made access different from a freely available mod accompanied by voluntary donations.

How much did access cost, and what did subscribers get?
Before the dispute, reports commonly described the Patreon subscription as $10 per month. That was a recurring subscription for access to a collection of R.E.A.L. conversions, not a one-time $10 purchase of the Cyberpunk 2077 module alone. Reporting described Ross’s wider catalogue as covering around 40 or more games, including titles such as Elden Ring and Final Fantasy VII Remake. See Road to VR’s account of the original takedown and subscription.
The difference matters: Patreon was the platform for Ross’s creator-run subscription, while the practical result was that payment was required to access the fan-made conversions. CD PROJEKT treated that paywall as commercial use barred by its guidelines.

Could the Cyberpunk VR mod return?
Yes, in principle. CD PROJEKT vice president of business development Jan Rosner said the company supported fan mods and acknowledged Ross’s work, but that the VR mod could be made available again if it were free. Optional donations would be different from requiring payment for access, according to UploadVR’s report on Rosner’s comments.
That was a stated path back, not confirmation that the module was restored. Ross objected to the company’s position, arguing that substantial technical work should be eligible for financial support, particularly when there was no official VR version. He also discussed earlier efforts to explore an official or commercially supported arrangement. Those are Ross’s arguments, not established legal findings; his account is in the Patreon post and a separate post explaining his technical and legal position.

Why did Ross’s wider VR library disappear?
The Cyberpunk dispute was followed by a separate DMCA notice from 505 Games concerning Ross’s Ghostrunner VR conversion. Ross then paused or removed access to his broader Patreon library, a collection reported to contain more than 40 conversions. PC Gamer reported on the wider withdrawal.
The catalogue’s later status changed: in March 2026, much of the R.E.A.L. VR suite became freely available, while the Cyberpunk 2077 module was excluded. Supporters could get earlier access to new features, but the public suite was free, according to Road to VR. So the later outcome was not that every R.E.A.L. mod stayed unavailable; the Cyberpunk module remained the exception.

Can you still play Cyberpunk 2077 in VR?
The original Patreon distribution was removed, and the available sources do not identify a sanctioned replacement or an official CD PROJEKT VR release. Ross’s Patreon account says an earlier inquiry about an official or distributed VR arrangement did not produce a partnership; it reports that CD PROJEKT said in 2022 it was not pursuing VR-porting opportunities at that time. That past response does not establish the company’s future plans.
Community projects and archived builds may be discussed elsewhere, but they are not automatically authorised, safe, current, or compatible. Avoid downloads from unknown sites or repackaged “leaks.” For a legitimate release, check Ross’s official channels and reputable mod platforms. Even an authorised older build can stop working when the game, VR runtime, headset software, or other dependencies change; no current compatibility claim is established here.
What the dispute means for game mods
The case turns on a practical distinction that Patreon subscriptions can blur: a creator may seek support, but a publisher’s rules may treat mandatory payment for the mod itself differently from donations that leave access open to everyone. A subscription can fund development and maintenance while still making the work inaccessible to non-paying users. CD PROJEKT’s policy drew that line explicitly.
It also shows why headlines should distinguish the actors. CD PROJEKT made the complaint and explained its policy; Patreon removed the content after the notice; Ross decided whether to release his module elsewhere or make it free. The dispute concerned this paid-access arrangement, not a documented blanket ban on all Cyberpunk VR projects.
