The right fix depends on when FIFA 23 crashes: immediately after you click Play, after the EA AntiCheat screen, in a menu, or during a match. Start with the matching checks below and stop when the game is stable. One important point: FIFA 23 on PC requires DirectX 12; EA says it does not support DirectX 11, so forcing DX11 is not a valid fix.
Match the crash to the likely cause

These are sensible troubleshooting priorities, not guaranteed diagnoses. If only online modes fail, consider account, service, network, or anticheat issues separately from local graphics crashes.
Fix 1: Check the PC requirements and DirectX 12
EA’s original FIFA 23 PC FAQ lists Windows 10 64-bit and DirectX 12. It does not list Windows 11 in the original requirements, which is not proof that Windows 11 is unsupported. The same FAQ states that FIFA 23 uses DirectX 12 exclusively and does not support DirectX 11.

Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee stable performance. Leave additional free drive space for Windows, updates, shader caches, and temporary files. On a laptop, make sure the game uses the discrete NVIDIA or AMD GPU rather than integrated graphics. Check Windows graphics settings or your GPU control panel for the per-app GPU preference.

Fix 2: Update Windows and the graphics driver
- Install pending Windows updates, then restart the PC.
- Download the driver for your graphics hardware from its manufacturer: NVIDIA Driver Downloads, AMD Drivers and Support, or Intel Driver & Support Assistant.
- Restart again and test FIFA 23 before reopening overlays or tuning utilities.
A newer driver may resolve compatibility problems, but a newly released or faulty driver can also introduce instability. If the crashes started immediately after a driver update, try the previous stable driver or use the manufacturer’s clean-install option rather than assuming the newest release is always best.
Fix 3: Repair or verify FIFA 23’s files
EA app
- Open the EA app and go to Library.
- Find FIFA 23 and select its Manage icon.
- Choose Repair, wait for the check to finish, then restart the EA app and launch the game.

Steam or Epic Games Store
Use the storefront’s installed-file verification option: in Steam, open the game’s Properties and choose its file verification option; in Epic Games Store, open the game’s Manage menu and choose Verify. Labels can vary by launcher version. A Steam or Epic copy may still use the EA app to launch, so file verification does not rule out an EA app or anticheat issue.
Fix 4: Clear the EA app cache
Try this when the EA app is stuck, fails to update, shows the wrong library state, or acts as though the game is missing. EA says cache clearing does not fix server outages or unavailable online services.

If the EA app opens
- Select the three-line menu in the upper-left corner.
- Choose Help, then App recovery.
- Select Clear cache.
If the EA app will not open
- Open the Windows Start menu and select All Apps.
- Expand the EA folder and select App Recovery.
- Choose Clear Cache.

Fix 5: Reinstall EA AntiCheat if the crash follows its screen
FIFA 23 introduced EA AntiCheat on PC. EA’s current support pages document the system under the name EA Javelin anticheat; the newer support terminology does not mean every instruction was written specifically for FIFA 23. Reinstalling it is most relevant when the game closes after the anticheat splash screen or displays an anticheat error.
- Close FIFA 23 and the EA app.
- In File Explorer, open
C:Program FilesEAAC. - Run
EAAntiCheat.Installer.exe. - Select FIFA 23 and choose Uninstall.
- Run the installer again, select FIFA 23, and choose Install.
- Restart Windows and launch the game through its normal storefront.
EA warns that games requiring anticheat will not be playable while it is uninstalled. Its current anticheat documentation lists Windows 10 version 10.0.19041 or newer for Javelin anticheat; treat that as a requirement in the current anticheat guidance, not as FIFA 23’s original published operating-system specification. Use the Error #701 command only for Error #701
If the installer says anticheat could not start and then shows Error #701, EA documents this targeted step:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run
fsutil resource setautoreset true C:. If Windows is installed on another drive, replaceC:with that drive. - Restart the PC and try the anticheat installer again.
This command is for the documented Error #701 condition, not a routine fix for every crash.
Fix 6: Close overlays or use a clean boot to find conflicts
Temporarily close overlays and utilities that can hook into the game or compete with anticheat. Test one group at a time if practical:
- Discord, Steam, and Xbox Game Bar overlays
- NVIDIA or AMD recording and overlay features, and OBS
- MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner Statistics Server, and other monitoring or tuning tools
- RGB, motherboard-control, and third-party controller-remapping software
- Other anticheat tools, VPNs, or aggressive security software if they appear to interfere
Do not permanently remove security software as a first step. Test with it closed only when safe and allowed by its vendor; use a narrowly scoped game exception only if the vendor’s instructions support one. FIFA 23’s original PC FAQ also warned that software modifications or community mods may not work with its anticheat, which was designed to prevent external file injection.
Clean boot in Windows 10 or 11
- Search Windows for
msconfigand open System Configuration. - On Services, check Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all.
- Open Startup and select Open Task Manager.
- Disable enabled startup applications in Task Manager, then restart the PC.
- Test FIFA 23. If it works, re-enable services and startup items in batches until the conflict returns.
- Restore normal startup when finished by re-enabling the items you disabled.
EA provides these steps in its clean-boot guide; Microsoft also describes the procedure and cautions users to make System Configuration changes carefully in its clean-boot instructions. A clean boot temporarily disables startup software, so some normal PC features may be unavailable during the test.
Fix 7: Cap FPS and test V-Sync
For freezes or crashes during gameplay, EA’s current crash guidance recommends capping the frame rate and trying V-Sync so the frame rate is synchronized with the display’s refresh rate. Treat both as stability tests, not guaranteed cures.
- For a 60 Hz display, start with a 60 FPS cap.
- For a 120 Hz or 144 Hz display, test a cap below the panel’s maximum refresh rate.
- Enable V-Sync in FIFA 23 or in the GPU control panel.
- Use one frame limiter at a time to avoid competing caps. If stable, raise the cap gradually.

Fix 8: Check anticheat security requirements, repair Windows, then consider reinstalling
Check Secure Boot only when anticheat points you there
Do not change BIOS settings just because FIFA 23 crashes. If an anticheat error or current EA guidance indicates a Secure Boot issue, first check the existing configuration:
- Press Windows + R, enter
msinfo32, and press Enter. - In System Summary, inspect BIOS Mode and Secure Boot State.
EA’s Secure Boot guide explains that Secure Boot depends on UEFI, a GPT Windows disk, and TPM 2.0. If BIOS Mode says Legacy, enabling Secure Boot may require converting the system disk from MBR to GPT and changing boot mode. A wrong BIOS change can prevent Windows from booting. Back up important data and follow your PC or motherboard maker’s instructions; if you are unsure, do not change firmware settings. Secure Boot is not established as mandatory for every FIFA 23 installation.
Repair Windows components when other errors appear
If FIFA 23’s anticheat installer fails, Windows reports missing DLLs, or other applications also freeze, use Microsoft’s built-in repair tools. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run these commands in order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth- After DISM completes successfully, run
sfc /scannow. - Restart Windows and test FIFA 23.
Microsoft documents this order in its System File Checker instructions. These tools address Windows component corruption, not damaged game files.
Reinstall only after less disruptive fixes fail
EA’s crash guidance includes reinstalling the EA app or game as escalation steps. Repair the game again first; then reinstall the EA app if launcher problems persist, and reinstall FIFA 23 only after the preceding checks fail. Reinstallation takes time and bandwidth and may not help with driver, hardware, or firmware problems. Back up any relevant local saves or configuration before removing software.
When a crash points beyond FIFA 23
- Only FIFA 23 crashes: Prioritize its files, EA app state, anticheat, and overlays.
- Several games crash: Check GPU drivers, temperatures, overclocks or undervolts, and RAM stability.
- The PC restarts or shuts down: Stop treating it as an ordinary game-file problem; investigate cooling, power delivery, and system stability.
- Nothing resolves an anticheat error: Record the exact error code and when it appears, then contact EA Support.
For a useful support report, include the launcher you use, Windows version, GPU model and driver version, when the crash occurs, the exact error text, and whether a clean boot changed the result.
