Why Cody Rhodes Failed to Qualify for WWE Money in the Bank 2026

Cody Rhodes failed to qualify because Kevin Owens won the final men’s triple-threat qualifier, with Randy Orton interfering to stop Rhodes from winning, according to WWE’s official match page. The evidence supports one direct explanation—not three independently reported causes—so the other two points below explain the match format and result rather than inventing additional reasons.

1. Kevin Owens won the final qualifier

On the October 2, 2026 episode of SmackDown, Owens defeated Rhodes and Johnny Gargano in the final men’s qualifying match, taking the last spot in the Money in the Bank Ladder Match. Sports Illustrated’s recap also reports Owens qualifying at Rhodes’s expense: Sports Illustrated’s October 2 SmackDown recap.

2. Randy Orton’s interference worked against Rhodes

WWE’s official match page says Owens became the final entrant “after Randy Orton interfered to keep The American Nightmare from winning.” That is the clearest stated circumstance explaining why Rhodes did not win. WWE’s account does not identify a separate backstage motive for Orton’s action, so it would be speculation to assign one. WWE’s 2026 Men’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match page.

3. A triple-threat match left Rhodes with no one-on-one path to the win

The qualifier was contested by three wrestlers, not a singles opponent: Rhodes, Owens, and Gargano. In that format, Rhodes could lose the spot when Owens won, regardless of whether Rhodes had first overcome Gargano. That is a consequence of the match setup, not a separately reported reason or evidence that WWE deliberately disadvantaged Rhodes. WWE described the qualification process as a series of triple-threat matches, with six men qualifying for the ladder match. WWE’s qualifier roundup.

What Rhodes missed

WWE’s official event page listed Money in the Bank for Saturday, October 10, 2026, and described six men qualifying for the ladder match through triple-threat qualifiers. With Owens taking the final place, Rhodes was not among the men set to compete in that match. Event schedules can change; consult WWE’s event page for the latest details.
