On the September 18, 2026 episode of WWE SmackDown, Trick Williams earned a Money in the Bank Ladder Match spot, Sami Zayn retained the Undisputed WWE Title, and CM Punk returned to disrupt the main event. Those choices made for a strong episode, though “Triple H got right” is a judgment about the booking—not confirmation of who made each decision or why.
1. Damian Priest gave his betrayal of R-Truth an explanation
Sportskeeda’s recap says Priest explained that he was tired of cleaning up after R-Truth and frustrated that Truth was handing out title opportunities. That account gives the turn a personal grievance viewers can follow instead of leaving the betrayal as a shock with no stated cause. It is a useful storytelling choice: an explanation makes the conflict easier to invest in, even if viewers disagree with Priest’s reasoning.
WWE’s official results page does not independently detail this segment, so the account of Priest’s explanation comes from Sportskeeda’s September 18 episode commentary, rather than WWE’s match results.
2. Trick Williams qualified for Money in the Bank
WWE confirms that Williams defeated Randy Orton and Rey Fenix in a triple-threat qualifying match to earn a place in the Money in the Bank Ladder Match. Putting Williams in a high-profile ladder match gives him a prominent opportunity alongside established names. Sportskeeda’s view that the exposure could help elevate him is a booking argument, not a guaranteed career outcome.

Orton’s presence also gave the qualifying match a recognizable opponent whose stature made Williams’s win feel consequential. Whether that opportunity leads to a title path remains to be seen; the confirmed result is Williams’s qualification.
3. Sami Zayn retained the Undisputed WWE Title
Zayn beat Kevin Owens to keep the championship, but CM Punk’s interference shaped the finish: WWE says Punk struck Owens with the title, allowing Zayn to land a Helluva Kick. Sportskeeda argues that having Zayn lose immediately after winning the title the prior week would have stalled his momentum. That is a reasonable case for the retention, while the interference also left the result tied to the wider conflict rather than a clean victory.

After the title match, WWE reports, Punk hit both Owens and Zayn with a GTS. The sequence made his return an active part of the episode’s ending: he affected who won, then attacked both wrestlers after the bell. Sportskeeda considers the retaliation an effective closing moment in light of the previous week’s title-match events. As an ending, it left the show with a clear conflict in motion instead of letting the main event conclude with the title change alone.
