Concorde’s speed advantage came with a route-network constraint
Concorde was built to fly faster than sound, but airlines could not use that speed freely everywhere. Sonic booms and noise objections restricted supersonic flight over land, limiting the routes on which the aircraft could deliver its main advantage. The UK Parliament’s briefing says restrictions in many countries severely constrained Concorde’s route network. A U.S. Government Accountability Office report from 1977 described it as noisier than any subsonic aircraft then in commercial service—a historical comparison, not a claim about aircraft noise today. That mismatch mattered commercially: an airline considering an expensive, specialized fleet needed enough routes and customers to make it pay, while Concorde’s supersonic advantage was constrained by where it could fly at speed.
Only two airlines ordered Concorde
The customer base never broadened beyond BOAC, later part of British Airways, and Air France. The FAA reports that just 20 Concordes were produced. This exceptionally narrow uptake meant the aircraft did not become a widely adopted part of commercial aviation, leaving its future dependent on two operators. Maintenance costs and premium-travel revenue caught up with the aircraft
By 2003, the commercial case had weakened further. The House of Commons Library briefing describes falling numbers of full-fare business passengers, particularly after the Paris crash, alongside sharply rising maintenance costs. British Airways said its retirement decision was commercial: passenger revenue was falling while maintenance costs were rising, and an enhanced maintenance program would require substantial investment in the coming years. The evidence does not support reducing the decision to a single expense or event. Restricted routes and limited airline uptake had constrained the business from the outset; weaker premium-passenger revenue and growing maintenance needs made continuing service harder to justify.

The 2000 crash was serious, but did not end service immediately
On 25 July 2000, Air France Flight 4590 crashed after metal debris left on the runway by a DC-10 damaged a Concorde tire. The FAA’s account describes how tire fragments and resulting fuel-tank damage led to fuel leakage, fire, and loss of the aircraft. The BEA hosts the final investigation report. The crash had major consequences for confidence and passenger demand. However, Concorde returned to service after safety modifications, and the FAA notes that it had not suffered a fatal accident during nearly 25 years of service before Flight 4590. The crash therefore belongs in the explanation of the aircraft’s declining commercial context, not as the sole reason it stopped flying.

When did Concorde stop flying?
Air France ended passenger flights on 31 May 2003. British Airways’ final service followed on 24 October 2003, after the airline announced in April that it would retire its fleet. The dates and announcement are reported in the UK Parliament briefing.

Concorde was an extraordinary engineering achievement, but technical performance alone could not overcome the limits of its usable route network, the tiny number of airline customers, and the economics of maintaining the aircraft as premium-travel revenue fell. The National Air and Space Museum sums up the tension by describing Concorde as “a stunning technological achievement that could not overcome serious economic problems.” National Air and Space Museum.

UK public spending figures provide one further measure of the scale of the project, but they should not be mistaken for an airline operating-cost total. In a 2003 parliamentary answer, the government reported gross expenditure of £1,358 million and net expenditure of £1,062 million after receipts, in prices of the day, based on appropriation accounts covering 1956–57 to 1986–87.
