Dan Houser says he is avoiding GTA 6 to protect his creative focus, not because he dislikes Rockstar or has judged the game. The Rockstar co-founder also says he limits open-world games more broadly: when he plays them, he finds himself analyzing how they were made instead of simply enjoying them.
Why is Dan Houser avoiding GTA 6?
Houser said he had not seen GTA 6’s extended reveal and would try to avoid it because he tries to keep distractions that might disrupt his creative work out of his attention. In comments from a Variety interview reported by Video Games Chronicle and GamesRadar+, he explained that he wants to think about new ways to make games rather than compare another team’s work with what he might have done differently.

That is a statement about how he manages creative influence, not a criticism of GTA 6. Houser did not say he was avoiding the game because he expected it to outshine his projects, nor did he offer a judgment about its quality.
Why does he avoid open-world games generally?
Houser’s habit is broader than GTA 6. He said that playing open-world games can prompt him to break down the work behind them in real time: the strengths and weaknesses of a team, the quality of animation, the design of a feature, or the decisions that may have led to it. He described that analysis as distracting.
#1 Best Overall
For someone who spends much of his working life making open-world games, the distinction is practical: he wants to experience ideas without turning another studio’s choices into a running comparison with his own creative decisions.
How does this relate to his work at Absurd Ventures?
At the time of the interview coverage, Houser was working on projects at Absurd Ventures that also involved open-world games. GamesRadar described one as an open-world comedy focused on comedy and character memory, and another as a dystopian science-fiction game about a game development going wrong and a sentient rogue AI. VGC characterized one of the projects as a comedy action-adventure.

The reporting indicates that Houser’s approach predates the current GTA 6 conversation. VGC reports that while working on Red Dead Redemption, he stopped watching Westerns, and that he did not watch The Sopranos until after leaving Rockstar. The examples fit the same stated principle: limit exposure to work that could shape or distract from his own creative process.
