Yes—Diablo III is still the best Diablo for players who value immediate combat, rewarding loot, repeatable play and low-friction co-op as one complete package. That is a judgment, not a universal fact. A different weighting of atmosphere, story or character-building depth can make another entry the better choice, but on the criteria that matter most to me, Diablo III remains the series’ strongest all-rounder in 2026.
The important distinction is between the game itself and the version you buy. The Eternal Collection bundles the original game, Reaper of Souls and Rise of the Necromancer, giving newcomers the complete package rather than a piecemeal return to a 2012 release.

What “best Diablo” means here
There is no objective scoreboard that can settle a preference between Diablo games. “Best” depends on what a player wants the series to do. My standard is deliberately practical:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Immediate combat: attacks should feel readable, responsive and satisfying before a build becomes mathematically optimized.
- Loot that changes decisions: drops should encourage experimentation instead of becoming background numbers.
- Replay value: the game needs a reason to return after the campaign, not merely a long first run.
- Low-friction co-op: joining friends should be straightforward, with a clear version of the game available on the platforms people actually use.
- A complete package: the edition should include the substantial expansions and class content a new or returning player would otherwise have to research separately.
On those axes, Diablo III is unusually coherent. It is not my pick because it has the darkest tone, the most elaborate story or the most demanding character-planning. It wins because its major parts reinforce one another: fast encounters make loot exciting, loot makes repeatable activities worthwhile, and the broad edition makes cooperative play easy to recommend.

That framing also explains why another reader can reasonably disagree. If atmosphere or slower customization carries more weight than combat flow and accessibility, the conclusion changes.
The strongest case: a complete, replayable package
Five acts and seven classes give the first run real breadth
Blizzard’s Nintendo Switch announcement describes the Eternal Collection as containing a five-act campaign and seven classes. Those are publisher product-description figures from the 2018 announcement, not a promise about any current seasonal configuration. They nevertheless explain why the collection remains a substantial starting point: a new player has a full campaign structure and several distinct class routes before worrying about endgame optimization.
Class variety matters more in Diablo than a simple character-count comparison suggests. The appeal is not just seeing seven names on a selection screen; it is having different ways to approach the same campaign, different loot priorities and different reasons to replay. That variety gives a group of friends room to choose contrasting roles without requiring everyone to repeat the same experience.
Adventure Mode is the feature that keeps the campaign from being the finish line
The same announcement identifies Adventure Mode as a separate, endlessly replayable mode. That separation is central to the argument for Diablo III. The campaign supplies a structured journey, while Adventure Mode supplies the loop that makes continued play make sense. A player can finish the story and still have a clearly defined place to experiment with classes, chase better equipment and play short sessions with friends.
“Endlessly replayable” is promotional language, so it should not be read as a guarantee that every player will enjoy infinite repetition. It does establish the intended design: the game was built to continue after the five-act narrative rather than treating the credits as a hard stop.
The Eternal Collection removes edition uncertainty
The Eternal Collection includes:
- Diablo III, the original game;
- Reaper of Souls;
- Rise of the Necromancer.
That bundle is confirmed in both Activision Blizzard’s Switch announcement and the PlayStation Store listing. For a returning player, this matters because “Is Diablo III worth playing?” is partly an edition question. Buying a package that already contains the major expansion and the necromancer content is simpler than reconstructing which release includes what.
Blizzard CEO and cofounder Mike Morhaime called the Switch package “the definitive version of Diablo III” in the 2018 announcement. That is a publisher executive’s promotional description of the bundle, not proof that Diablo III is objectively the best game in the series. It is useful as a description of completeness, not as a review score.

Why the combat-and-loot loop still works
Speed makes every drop immediately legible
My preference for Diablo III starts with tempo. Encounters move quickly enough that the basic action—enter a fight, use abilities, see enemies fall, inspect the rewards—stays clear. That clarity lowers the cost of trying a different skill or class. You do not need to turn every session into a planning exercise before the game becomes fun.
This is not an argument that deeper systems are bad. It is an argument about sequence. Diablo III lets the tactile part of the game arrive first. Build decisions can become more sophisticated as a character develops, but the moment-to-moment loop does not require a spreadsheet to justify itself.
Loot has a job beyond filling an inventory
The best action-RPG loot system creates a chain of decisions: a new item changes what you can do, that change makes another activity attractive, and the activity produces another reason to adjust the build. Diablo III’s appeal is that this chain is easy to understand even when the underlying optimization becomes complex.
That accessibility is especially valuable in co-op. A friend can join, see a new item or ability interaction and make a meaningful change without first learning an enormous vocabulary of systems. The result is a game that supports both casual sessions and long-term tinkering without requiring the casual player to adopt the expert’s mindset.

Replayability is not just “more hours”
Campaign replay and post-campaign play serve different needs
A campaign is good at providing direction: a sequence of acts, a destination and a reason to keep moving. A repeatable endgame is good at providing flexibility: short sessions, build testing and a reason to keep improving a character. Diablo III’s five-act campaign and Adventure Mode divide those jobs cleanly.
That distinction is why I rank it above a game that offers only a longer story. A longer first run does not automatically create better replay. Diablo III’s structure acknowledges that players may want to finish the narrative, then spend their time in a mode designed for repeated activity.
Echoing Nightmare shows how the endgame evolved
In its 2022 anniversary article, Blizzard said Echoing Nightmare would become a permanent, year-round feature. That statement documents an important historical direction: the developers were adding a repeatable challenge intended to remain available rather than disappear as a temporary event.

It does not establish the exact state of current seasons, rotations or rewards in 2026. Those live-service details can change, and no current season schedule or player-population figure is established here. The narrower, defensible point is that Diablo III’s endgame continued to receive permanent replay-oriented additions after launch.
Co-op is a concrete advantage, especially on console
Switch supports several ways to play together
Activision Blizzard’s Switch announcement describes cooperative play for up to four players locally on one system, wirelessly across systems, or online. That combination gives the game a practical social advantage: a group does not have to share the same room, the same console or the same session length to play together.
The announcement is from 2018, so it should be read as a description of the announced edition rather than a guarantee about current retail availability or network conditions. It still identifies the edition’s intended co-op options clearly.
PlayStation requirements are platform-specific
The PlayStation Store listing for the PS4 Eternal Collection states one-to-four-player support and optional online play. It also says that online play requires PlayStation Plus. Those requirements apply to the PlayStation listing; they should not be generalized to Switch or other platforms.
The same listing says the PS4 game can be played on PS5, while warning that some PS4 features may be absent. Check the current store page for your region before buying, because price, inventory and regional availability can change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy low-friction co-op matters to the “best” argument
Co-op is not a bonus category for this series. It changes how the game is consumed. A title that supports a quick run with friends, a local session or a longer progression night has more opportunities to become part of a routine. Diablo III’s documented four-player options make that social use case explicit.
Another game may offer more elaborate group planning, but complexity is not automatically better when the question is whether friends can get playing quickly. Diablo III wins my comparison because it treats cooperation as a normal mode of play rather than a specialist activity.

The counterargument: why someone may prefer Diablo IV or another entry
GamesRadar+’s 2026 ranking reaches a different conclusion
GamesRadar+’s 2026 ranking places Diablo IV first and Diablo III fourth among the five Diablo games it lists. The article describes Diablo IV as offering more RPG depth and slower, more thoughtful customization, while criticizing Diablo III’s story and grind. That is one outlet’s subjective assessment, not a consensus measurement, but it is a serious counterargument to this hill.
If you value a slower pace, more deliberate customization and a darker presentation above immediate action, Diablo IV may be the better fit. The ranking’s order also reflects a holistic assessment that includes downloadable content, so it is not simply comparing launch versions.

Diablo III’s tone is not the reason I recommend it. Players who want oppressive atmosphere or a particular narrative mood may find another entry more compelling. A campaign can be memorable because of its writing and world-building even when its repeatable activities are less convenient.
This is where the subjective nature of “best” matters. I give combat flow, replay structure and co-op enough weight that a lighter or more accessible presentation does not disqualify Diablo III. Someone who reverses those priorities should not be talked out of a different choice.
Depth can be a feature, not a flaw
Diablo III’s low-friction approach can feel too streamlined to players who enjoy extended planning. If the pleasure is in making slower, more consequential progression decisions, a more demanding entry may deliver more satisfaction per hour. The existence of that preference does not undermine Diablo III; it identifies a different definition of value.

| Axis | Why Diablo III leads for this argument | Why another Diablo may lead for you |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign and tone | Five acts provide a substantial, clearly structured campaign, and the game reaches its action quickly. | A darker tone, different story emphasis or stronger atmosphere may matter more than speed. |
| Combat feel | Immediate, readable action makes a short session satisfying before deep optimization. | A slower, more deliberate pace can make each decision feel weightier. |
| Character progression | Class variety and accessible experimentation make trying a new direction approachable. | Players who want more RPG depth or slower customization may prefer Diablo IV, as GamesRadar+ argues. |
| Repeatable endgame | Adventure Mode is explicitly designed for continued replay, and Blizzard said Echoing Nightmare became year-round in 2022. | Another game’s current systems may better suit a player seeking a different progression model; current season details vary. |

What 14 years of history does—and does not—prove
The audience milestone is real, but it is not a current player count
Blizzard wrote in its 2022 10-year anniversary article that Diablo III had support from more than 65 million Nephalem worldwide over its first 10 years. That is Blizzard’s reported cumulative audience milestone. It is not a concurrent-user figure, an active-player estimate or proof of how many people are playing in 2026.
The number does, however, show that the game reached a very large audience across its first decade. That scale helps explain why its systems and co-op format remain familiar reference points, but it should not be used to claim a present-day population.
Best Value
- For PlayStation owners, Diablo III: Reaper of Souls - Ultimate Evil Edition offers 'The Last of Us' Nephalem Rift, a randomized dungeon swarming with Stalkers, Clickers and Bloaters in hand-picked environments with a unique 'The Last of Us' yellow spore effect. Also included is the 'Guise of the Colossi' Unique Armor; a unique transmogrification plan that unlocks six armors that are inspired by 'Shadow of the Colossus' and work for all classes.
- This Ultimate Evil Edition contains both Diablo III and the Reaper of Souls expansion set, together in one definitive volume.
- Play solo or form a party of up to four other heroes.
Longevity is evidence of design resilience, not automatic superiority
A game surviving for 14 years does not make it universally better than newer releases. It does show that the core loop has remained usable long enough for a large audience to return, replay and recommend it. In my framework, that resilience matters because replayability is one of the criteria being judged.
The anniversary evidence also has a limit: it documents Blizzard’s milestones and feature direction, not a complete technical history of every patch or the current state of every platform. Treating it as proof of present availability would go beyond what the source says.
Is Diablo III still worth playing in 2026?
For most players deciding whether to start or return, the answer is yes if your priorities match this list:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- You want combat that becomes fun immediately rather than after extensive setup.
- You want a campaign followed by a distinct repeatable mode.
- You expect to replay classes or experiment with builds.
- You want console co-op that supports up to four players, subject to platform-specific requirements.
- You prefer buying a complete collection that already includes the major expansion and necromancer content.
Choose another entry first if your priorities are chiefly a darker tone, slower customization or a different kind of RPG depth. GamesRadar+’s 2026 ranking is a useful reminder that a respected outlet can reasonably put Diablo IV ahead of Diablo III when it weights those qualities more heavily.
For a returning player, the practical choice is the Eternal Collection on the platform where your friends play. On PlayStation, verify the current regional listing, the PS Plus requirement for online play and the PS5 compatibility note. On Switch, treat the 2018 announcement as confirmation of the edition’s documented contents and co-op design, not as a guarantee of current stock.
My final position
Diablo III remains my best Diablo because it asks the least of the player before delivering the most of its loop. The five-act campaign gives it shape, seven classes give it replay routes, Adventure Mode gives it a reason to continue, and the Eternal Collection makes the entry point straightforward. Its documented local, wireless and online co-op options make the recommendation stronger for groups.
That verdict is intentionally conditional. Diablo IV can be the better game for someone who values slower customization and greater RPG depth; another entry can win on tone or story. But if “best” means the strongest balance of immediate combat, satisfying loot, repeatable play and uncomplicated co-op across a complete edition, I will keep choosing Diablo III—even 14 years later.
