In interviews years later, Houser described the long, demanding production cycles of Rockstar’s games and said he wanted to try other kinds of work. Those remarks explain his personal perspective; they were not the reason supplied in the 2020 announcement.
What Rockstar’s parent company announced in 2020
Take-Two Interactive’s February 4, 2020, SEC filing said Houser would leave Rockstar after an extended break that had begun in spring 2019. It named March 11, 2020, as his last day and thanked him for his contributions, but did not state why he was leaving. Read the filing. What Houser later said about leaving
In a Guardian interview published December 15, 2025, Houser described spending 20 years in full production mode from the start of a project to its finish. Completing a major game and then considering beginning another, he said, was “really intense.” He also said he had stayed because he loved the games, but wanted to try other work. Read the interview.
In remarks to BBC Radio 4, as reported by GamesRadar, Houser also emphasized the time and effort Rockstar’s large productions required. “The projects were really long and tough and take a long time to make,” he said. He added: “I don’t know if I had another one of those games in me.” Read GamesRadar’s account.

In that same interview, Houser described a production involving “450,000 lines of dialogue, and [an] equal number of parts of other things all trying to assemble itself.” That is his reported description of the complexity, not an independently audited count. Taken together, his later comments point to the scale and duration of the work, along with a desire to explore other projects, as his own explanation for moving on.
Did a dispute over GTA 6 make him leave?
The available evidence does not establish that. Houser’s comments about demanding productions are not a claim that a disagreement over GTA 6, a rejected story, or a workplace controversy prompted his departure. The official 2020 filing gave no motive, and the later interviews cited here do not identify a specific conflict as the cause.

Houser was a Rockstar co-founder and senior creative figure, so his departure naturally raises questions about the next Grand Theft Auto. In the Lex Fridman interview transcript, the conversation refers to Houser not having written Grand Theft Auto VI. That supports saying he was not the game’s writer; it does not establish that he authored its story before leaving.

Houser later formed Absurd Ventures, which works across formats. A Better Paradise began as a 12-part story podcast in 2024; a novel version and game adaptation were described as in development or production in the Guardian’s interview. The interview discusses his later work. That career move provides context for his stated interest in trying something new, but it does not reveal any private deliberations behind his departure.
