In Netflix’s television adaptation of The Witcher, Emhyr attacks Cintra to advance Nilfgaard’s wider conquest and to bring Ciri, Cintra’s heir, under his control. The two aims overlap. Ciri’s royal claim gives her political value, and her Elder Blood gives her strategic value beyond her bloodline. Emhyr is also Ciri’s biological father, but the series does not frame the invasion as a simple rescue. It presents the attack as imperial conquest with a personal, concealed relationship running underneath it.
This answer covers the Netflix series. The novels are a separate telling, and the show’s later explanations should not be assumed to match them point for point.
Four motives that overlap
Netflix’s official explainers do not give one reason for the invasion. They describe several motives that work together. The table below separates them, with the source each one comes from.
| Motive | What the adaptation shows | Where it is explained |
|---|---|---|
| Imperial strategy | Cintra is one target in Nilfgaard’s broader territorial campaign, which Netflix ties to an effort to take over the Continent and to the opening of the Second War. | Netflix Tudum Emhyr explainer, “Who Is Emhyr? The Witcher Season 4 Reveals The Emperor’s Dark Ambitions” (October 31, 2025) |
| Dynastic and political control | Ciri is Cintra’s heir, so holding her connects Emhyr’s rule to the kingdom and its legitimacy. | Netflix Tudum faction explainer, “So, Who’s Really in Charge on The Witcher?” |
| Personal pursuit | Emhyr wants to reunite with and control his daughter. The show pursues this through coercive political design rather than a straightforward rescue. | Both Netflix Tudum explainers |
| Magical and prophetic value | Ciri’s Elder Blood, including the potential to open portals to other worlds, makes her a prize for several factions. Netflix’s Season 4 explainer links Emhyr’s plans for her to Ithlinne’s prophecy. | Netflix Tudum Emhyr explainer (Season 4 material, the adaptation’s later explanation) |
Imperial strategy
The most direct reading is military. Netflix’s Emhyr explainer says his growing conquest of territory is tied to an effort to take over the Continent. It names Ciri as the final important piece of that plan and says the Thanedd coup distracted the North while Emhyr officially began the Second War. In that framing, Cintra is part of a campaign, not a single personal destination.

Dynastic and political control
Ciri’s place in Cintra’s succession is what makes her useful as a political asset. An heir who is in Nilfgaard’s hands gives the empire a route into the kingdom’s legitimacy. Netflix’s faction explainer treats her as politically important for this reason, which is why her capture or control matters beyond family reunion.
Personal pursuit
The personal thread is real in the show. Netflix’s explainers say Emhyr has continued his campaign of conquest while trying to reunite with Ciri. The series, however, depicts that reunion through coercive political designs. It does not present the attack as a rescue of a daughter, and treating it that way misreads the show.
Rank #2
- Incredibly detailed 7” scale figure based off The Witcher on Netflix
- Figure features Geralt in his Season 2 armor with his face pale and white from drinking potions creating the iconic ‘toxic’ look known in the series as ‘Witcher Mode’
- Designed with Ultra Articulation with up to 22 moving parts for full range of posing
- Includes Geralt's silver sword and a base
- Showcased in The Witcher themed window box packaging
Magical and prophetic value
Elder Blood is the reason several factions want Ciri, not only Emhyr. Netflix’s faction explainer notes that her power, including the potential to open portals to other worlds, is a major reason multiple groups want to capture or use her. Netflix’s Season 4 explainer goes further and connects Emhyr’s plans to Ithlinne’s prophecy. That is the adaptation’s later explanation, and readers should treat it as a feature of the series rather than a settled account of why the invasion happens.
Why the identity reveal does not settle the question
Netflix’s Season 2 finale reveals that Emhyr is Duny, Pavetta’s presumed-dead husband and Ciri’s father. In the Season 3 premiere, he destroys Cintran royal portraits that could expose his past and his paternal connection. The reveal therefore explains why his interest in Ciri is personal and why he kept it hidden.
Rank #3
- Incredibly detailed 7” scale figures based off The Witcher on Netflix
- Designed with Ultra Articulation with up to 22 moving parts for full range of posing
- Includes two swords and environmental base
- Figures are showcased in The Witcher themed window box packaging
- Included collectible art cards with character art on the front, and character biographies on the back
It does not replace the political reasons. Knowing that Emhyr is her father tells you why he wants Ciri. It does not explain why Cintra is the target, which depends on the imperial and dynastic motives above. Both threads need to be held together.
The line often quoted, and what it does not explain
Netflix’s official explainer attributes this line to Emhyr var Emreis in Season 3, Episode 2, as he recounts reclaiming his throne:
Rank #4
“I realized the only way that I could reclaim my throne was to infiltrate the castle, kill everyone that stood between me and the man that had stolen my life,” he says.
The quote shows how ruthless Emhyr is in pursuing power. It describes how he took back his own throne from the Usurper, not his decision to attack Cintra. It is useful for character, but it should not be cited as his direct explanation for the Cintra invasion.

Show and novels: keeping continuity straight
Netflix’s official title page describes the premise as Nilfgaard setting its sights on Cintra and classifies the series as based on books. That confirms the adaptation context. It does not establish that every motive shown on screen matches the novels. The explanations above concern the Netflix series, and where they go beyond the books, such as the Season 4 prophecy link, they are the show’s own additions.
Readers who want the source material can start with The Witcher novels. The official page does not identify a particular edition, so check which translation or edition you are buying.
