No one has publicly explained why Gina Torres stopped voicing Ikora Rey in Destiny 2. Bungie has not announced the change, and neither Torres nor her representatives have given a reason that has been published. What is established is the timing: the new voice first drew attention in May 2021, when the Season of the Splicer reveal showed a different actress speaking as Ikora. Mara Junot has voiced the Warlock Vanguard since then. Everything beyond that is speculation.
Who voiced Ikora Rey, and who voices her now
Ikora Rey is the Warlock Vanguard in Destiny 2. Gina Torres voiced her through the game’s content up to spring 2021. Mara Junot replaced her in May 2021 and has voiced the character since.
Searchers sometimes mix up Ikora Rey with Queen Mara Sov. They are different characters. The shared “Mara” in the new actress’s name adds to the confusion, but the recast concerns Ikora only.
What happened in May 2021
- Before the reveal: Torres voiced Ikora through the game’s content. Shortly before the change was noticed, she recorded a Cameo video encouraging Warlocks to take part in the Guardian Games, as Forbes reported.
- May 4, 2021: The Season of the Splicer reveal trailer gave fans their first clear sign of a new voice for Ikora. Coverage from Sixth Axis, GameSpot and DualShockers dates the first notice to this reveal.
- About May 11, 2021: Season of the Splicer launched, and players could hear the new voice in the game itself.
- About one week after launch: Mara Junot posted on Twitter about voicing the role, which was the first public confirmation of her casting.
- May 20, 2021: Forbes published Paul Tassi’s article “The Mystery Of Destiny 2’s New Ikora Rey”, which is the most detailed early report on the change.
One article from SVG gives 2017 as the year of the change. That conflicts with the Forbes, Inverse, GameSpot and Sixth Axis coverage, which all point to 2021. The 2021 date is the one that the better-sourced reporting supports.

Who announced the change?
Bungie did not announce it. According to Tassi’s Forbes reporting, Bungie never said Ikora had been recast, even though the change was obvious to players. Torres’ PR agency did not respond to his requests for comment. The only reply he received came from Mara Junot, by direct message. Junot’s public tweet about the role came later, as described above.
Because neither party has commented on the change, there is no statement from Bungie, Torres or Junot that explains the departure. Readers who want the original wording should read the Forbes piece directly, since it is the most detailed account of how the recast came to light.

The speculated reasons, and how plausible each is
Scheduling and other projects
This is the explanation with the most support, though it is still not confirmed. Tassi wrote that the obvious implication was that Torres may have been too busy. GameSpot noted that she was then starring in 9-1-1: Lone Star, which gives the idea a concrete basis. A busy schedule would explain a departure without any dispute, but no source connects that schedule to the Ikora decision.
Cost
DualShockers suggested that keeping a well-known actor for seasonal content might not make financial sense for Bungie, and it stressed that this was unconfirmed. Sixth Axis claimed she was fairly expensive to hire, but that is a guess rather than a sourced fact. Inverse reported that fans theorized she was too expensive or too busy. No figure about salaries, contract length or the number of lines she recorded has been published, so the cost theory cannot be tested.

Contract disputes and other causes
No source supports a contract dispute, a falling-out or any other specific cause. Torres has not been reported as fired or as having quit, and no evidence in the coverage indicates either.

If Bungie, Torres or Junot ever explain the change, the statement is most likely to appear on their official channels. Check Bungie’s official Destiny social accounts and website, and the social accounts of Gina Torres and Mara Junot. The reporting described here is current as of October 2026, and nothing newer had been published at that date.

- Collect and display all Destiny pop! Vinyl's!
Until such a statement appears, the honest answer is that the reason is unknown. The change is documented, the timing is clear, and the speculation has not been confirmed.
Anything about Torres’ schedule or the financial side of voice work is also outside what Bungie has published, so treat those claims as commentary, not as the cause.
