In the latter case, its tears make nearby creatures cry uncontrollably, giving it a chance to escape. The official Pokémon descriptions also connect nervousness and embarrassment with a different response: secreting water to help it blend in.
Why does Sobble cry?
Sobble is described in the official Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield profile as “a somewhat timid Water Lizard Pokémon.” The same profile says it bawls when it feels threatened. Its crying is therefore tied to fear and its timid nature—not to a stated medical or psychological condition.
The profile also explains what the tears do: they make nearby creatures cry uncontrollably, distracting them while Sobble escapes. That gives the behavior a defensive function in the specific situation where Sobble feels threatened; the description does not say every time it cries is a deliberate escape plan. The official Sobble profile provides the game-lore explanation.
How are Sobble’s tears different from its camouflage?
The profile describes two responses to different feelings. Nervousness or embarrassment can cause Sobble to secrete water from its body like sweat, changing its appearance so it can blend into its surroundings. Feeling threatened, by contrast, is associated with bawling and spreading tears to distract others.

What does “100 onions” mean?
An official Pokémon TCG coloring-card activity says: “When scared, this Pokémon cries. Its tears pack the chemical punch of 100 onions, and attackers won’t be able to resist weeping.” The phrase is fictional flavor text, not a measured scientific statistic or a real-world explanation of Sobble’s tears. It reinforces the idea that the tears make others weep. The official Sobble card activity includes that wording.

Official descriptions call Sobble timid and refer to it being nervous, embarrassed, scared, or threatened. They do not diagnose it with an anxiety disorder or offer a clinical explanation. It is safest to describe the character using the terms the Pokémon material actually gives.
