Michael fakes his death in Grand Theft Auto V to escape his criminal life and start over with his family in Los Santos under the name Michael De Santa. He makes the arrangement with Dave Norton, an FIB agent, and the plan works only by betraying his partners. The North Yankton setup goes differently than Trevor believes: Brad is killed and buried in the grave marked for Michael, while Trevor is left thinking Michael is dead and Brad is in prison. The lie is exposed later, in the Bury the Hatchet mission.
Who Michael Was Before the Fake Death
Michael’s original name is Michael Townley. He is one of three partners in the failed Ludendorff robbery in North Yankton, alongside Trevor Philips and Brad Snider. Understanding the plan requires knowing that Michael’s criminal career is not just a source of money for him. The story presents it as a source of constant danger, and the staged death is an attempt to end that danger for good. The game’s synopsis on Wikipedia’s Grand Theft Auto V page summarizes the characters and the secret arrangement that follows.

The Arrangement With Dave Norton
Michael’s way out is a deal with Dave Norton, an FIB agent who has his own reasons to take part. Norton gets a public resolution to the Michael Townley case, so the arrangement serves the agency as well as Michael. In exchange, Michael disappears from the criminal world and reappears under a new identity in Los Santos.
The arrangement is fiction, not a model of how real witness protection works. Its value to the reader is in what it reveals about the characters: Michael can only leave by making sure his partners carry the cost of his exit.

Why Michael Wanted Out
The clearest motive the story offers is protecting his family. Michael wants a normal life with them and distance from the criminal past that threatens it. That motive is real in the narrative, but it does not make Michael a selfless figure. He also wants to escape the consequences and dangers of the life he has been living, and the plan he chooses to do that requires betraying Trevor and Brad.
The reader should hold both points together. The family is the reason Michael gives for wanting out. Self-preservation is what the plan actually accomplishes, and the people who pay for it are the two partners who are kept in the dark.

What Trevor and Brad Were Left With
The cover story works because of what it does to Trevor. He believes Michael has died and that Brad has been imprisoned. In reality, Brad is killed and buried in the grave marked for Michael. The misinformation around Brad is what keeps Trevor from understanding the arrangement right away, and it is why he carries the belief for years.

How the Truth Comes Out in Bury the Hatchet
The story returns to North Yankton in the Bury the Hatchet mission. Trevor goes back to the town, and the cemetery discovery is what exposes the lie. Michael’s confession then clarifies the arrangement and what it cost. The Short Answer, Stated Plainly
Michael fakes his death to leave his criminal identity behind and build a new life with his family. The motive is sincere within the story, but the method depends on deceiving Trevor and sacrificing Brad, which is why the reveal in Bury the Hatchet matters so much.
