Game sharing usually stops for one of a handful of reasons: the console or account setting that authorizes access has changed, the purchase or subscription behind the game has lapsed or become unavailable, the specific title is not shareable, another person is using the shared copy, or a service outage, system update, or parental control is blocking the launch. Which of these applies depends on the platform, so identify the console and the exact message before changing any settings.
Gather three details before you troubleshoot
- The platform. PlayStation 5, Steam, Xbox, or a Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 console. Each system has its own sharing model, so a fix that works on one rarely carries over to another.
- The exact message or symptom. A padlock icon, a line such as “Another Nintendo Switch console is currently set as the primary console for your Nintendo Account,” or “You cannot play this software” each points to a different check.
- What changed. A new console, a different purchasing account, a lapsed subscription, a recent system update, a new parental-control setting, or another person starting the same game.
Common causes and their first checks
| Cause | What it usually looks like | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Changed console activation or Home console setting | A game that played on one console stops working there after sharing was set up somewhere else | On PS5, whether Console Sharing and Offline Play is active on another PS5. On Xbox, the purchasing account’s Home console designation. On Nintendo, whether another console is set as the account’s primary console. |
| Expired or unavailable entitlement | Content that depends on a subscription stops loading, or a purchased item is missing for the sharing user | Confirm the sharing user bought the content, and that any required subscription (PlayStation Plus, for example) is still active. |
| Service or network outage | Activation fails, or the console cannot confirm access | Check the platform’s service status, then your network connection. |
| Ineligible or restricted title | One game cannot be shared while others still work | Check whether that title is eligible under the platform’s rules. Steam publishes its exclusions in detail. |
| Shared copy in use | The title shows as locked or unavailable | Check whether another family member (Steam) or another console (Nintendo) is using that digital copy. On Steam the game stays locked until that play session ends. |
| System update or parental control | The console asks for an update, or launch is blocked by an age-rating restriction | Install any pending system software, then review the console’s parental-control settings. |
How the platforms differ
There is no single switch that governs game sharing across platforms. The table below shows what each system ties access to and what limits it states.
| Platform | Sharing model | Access tied to | Stated limits | Where to check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Console Sharing and Offline Play | The purchasing user, plus PlayStation Plus where the content depends on it | Can be enabled on one PS5 at a time | The sharing setting on each PS5 |
| Steam | Steam Families | Family member accounts within one family | Up to six members; per-title exclusions | Family settings, and the title’s share eligibility |
| Xbox | Home console designation | The purchasing account’s Home console, and content owned or supplied by an active subscription | Device and install-pool limits exist, but specific numbers are not stated in the cited documentation | The purchasing account’s Home console designation |
| Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 | Nintendo Account, multi-console play, virtual game cards, and GameShare | The Nintendo Account and its primary console | Number of sharing consoles not stated in the cited guidance | Account and console settings, and parental controls |
Platform-specific checks
PlayStation 5
Sony describes Console Sharing and Offline Play as letting anyone using the enabled PS5 play the purchaser’s downloaded games and media, including while offline, and use some PlayStation Plus benefits. Because the setting can be enabled on only one PS5 at a time, turning it on for a different console is one way an older console can stop getting access. The steps below follow Sony’s guidance on its Canadian English support page for Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Identify the PS5 that currently has Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled.
- If the setting is already active on another PS5, disable it there before changing activation on the console you want.
- For a missing game or media item, confirm that the sharing user purchased the content.
- If the game or benefit comes from PlayStation Plus, confirm the subscription is active and that the game is still available through the service.
- For activation errors, check PlayStation service status and current system software, confirm the network connection, restart the router and the console, and then follow Sony’s connection troubleshooting.
- If a padlock icon appears, follow Sony’s padlock guidance, since it can signal a license or network issue.
Steam
Steam Families replaces Steam Family Sharing and Steam Family View, according to Steam Support’s Steam Families User Guide and FAQ. Steam Support says a family can have up to six members.

Sharing is also decided title by title. Steam lists these exclusions: games that require third-party keys, accounts, or subscriptions; free-to-play games and their purchased DLC; games with regional or operating-system restrictions; games whose publisher has opted out; and games the owner has marked private. Eligibility can change when a publisher opts out, so a title that shared before can stop being shareable without any change on your side.
If family membership fails, Steam points to household eligibility or cooldowns for an account or family slot. The guide does not state how long a cooldown lasts. If only one game fails, check that title’s eligibility before changing family settings, because family settings cannot override an excluded title.

Xbox
Microsoft’s Xbox Game Development Kit documentation describes the Home console setting as the way a purchaser shares eligible digital games, durable add-ons, and certain subscription content with other accounts signed in on that console. That documentation is written for developers, so read it as an explanation of the model rather than a consumer troubleshooting guide. The page is Microsoft Learn’s Product sharing model for games.
In practice, check two things: the purchasing account’s Home console designation, and whether the content is owned outright or supplied by an active subscription. The same documentation mentions device and install-pool constraints without giving specific limits, so do not assume a number. If the problem is tied to a specific account, use current Xbox Support for account recovery or entitlement escalation.

You cannot play this software
Parental controls can block software based on its age rating, including joining a GameShare session. Check the console’s parental-control restriction first. If you know the PIN, enter it; if you do not, use Nintendo’s recovery guidance. The relevant UK support article explains the message.

If none of the checks matches
- Note the platform, the exact wording of the message, the date the problem started, and whether the content came from a subscription.
- Confirm which account bought the content and which console or family it is authorized on.
- Contact the platform’s official support with those details, since the cause often sits in the account or entitlement record rather than on the console.
