Mojang did not redesign Steve in a single move. Three separate things get grouped under the question: a slim body option for players, a set of seven new default characters added in 2022, and a refresh of Steve’s skin texture in the same period. The slim option was added because the classic, broad-shouldered Steve body could read as masculine even when a player picked a feminine-coded skin. The 2022 characters joined Steve and Alex rather than replacing them. Mojang’s official sources explain the first two changes, but they do not give a specific art-direction reason for each detail of Steve’s texture refresh.
Skin, model, and default roster are different things
Most confusion about Steve comes from treating three separate settings as one. A skin is the image wrapped onto the character. A player model is the body shape underneath it, and in Minecraft that shape is what sets arm width. Mojang’s skin guide describes Steve as using the classic shape and Alex as using the slim shape, with Steve’s arms four pixels wide and Alex’s three (Mojang, “What is a Minecraft Skin?”, 5 June 2023).
The table below separates the three changes that readers usually mean when they ask why Steve looks different.
| Change | What it affects | Evidence available |
|---|---|---|
| Slim player model | Body shape and arm width, not the texture | Developer interview with Jens Bergensten, 2014 (PC Gamer) |
| Seven new default characters | Which default characters players can choose, in wide and narrow models | Mojang announcement, 20 October 2022; Minecraft Live 2022 recap |
| Steve texture refresh | Skin image and visible detail, not body shape | Java Edition Snapshot 22w45a (9 November 2022) records new defaults; no official art rationale stated for Steve’s texture |
Why the slim model was added
The clearest official explanation comes from a 2014 interview with Minecraft developer Jens Bergensten, reported by PC Gamer. He said: “The reason why we wanted a ‘slimmer’ Steve was because the broad-shoulder Steve would look masculine even with a feminine skin.”

The fix was a body shape rather than a separate fixed character. The slim model uses narrower arms and slightly lower shoulders, so a player can pick a less masculine-coded silhouette while keeping the same default character identity. Because the change lives in the model setting, a skin can be paired with either shape.
Why more default characters were added
In October 2022 Mojang introduced seven new default skins: Noor, Sunny, Ari, Zuri, Makena, Kai, and Efe. The announcement described the goal as options that better reflect the community and help players see themselves in Minecraft. It also said Steve and Alex “aren’t going anywhere,” so the change is an expansion of the roster rather than a replacement of Steve.

The announcement states that the nine defaults, Steve, Alex, and the seven additions, are available in both wide and narrow models (Mojang, “Introducing new default Minecraft skins”, 20 October 2022). The official Minecraft Live 2022 recap confirms that the seven joined Steve and Alex in the Launcher and Dressing Room (Minecraft Live 2022: The Recap, 15 October 2022).
What changed in Steve’s texture, and what is not established
Steve’s skin texture was updated in the same 2022 period as the new defaults. The official Java Edition Snapshot 22w45a documents the new default skins for offline players (Minecraft Feedback, 9 November 2022). That snapshot does not say why Steve’s texture was redrawn, and it gives no specific art-direction reason for details such as his facial hair. Any explanation that ties the redraw to matching Minecraft’s wider art style is a reasonable guess, not a stated Mojang position.

Why some players see an older Steve
Some players see a Steve that does not match the newest texture. A Mojang bug-tracker report, MCPE-80434, describes player heads displaying the older Steve texture while a newer texture was in use. It was created on 25 May 2020 and last updated on 11 July 2022. The report shows that a version mismatch can occur between in-game representations in a given edition. It does not show that the texture change was a deliberate redesign of the character.

If Steve looks different from what you expect, work through these checks in order. They separate a model change from a texture change and from an edition-specific display issue.

- Each 3.25-inch scale Minecraft figure comes with 1 Accessory and 1 Portal Piece. You can collect them all to build a complete giant Portal.
- Figures have movable joints, so Minecraft fans can pose them for action and storytelling play!
- Design and personality details stay true to the unique, pixelated world of Minecraft. Perfect for collecting!
- Adventurous fun for kids who love exploration, creativity and survival the Minecraft way.
- A great gift for video-game players and fans who love adventure, ages 6 years old and up!
- Check the model first. A slim or wide setting changes arm width. A narrow body is a model choice, not a new Steve.
- Check the skin you have selected. In Java Edition, Mojang’s guide says players can choose one of nine default skins or import a skin PNG through the Launcher. In Bedrock Edition, the guide describes the Character interface for choosing a default character and customizing features.
- Compare across screens. If your character in the Dressing Room looks current but a player head or another in-game representation looks older, you are likely seeing the mismatch described in MCPE-80434 rather than a different Steve.
- Treat menu names as provisional. The skin guide dates from June 2023, and menu labels may change with future interface updates.
Steve is still in the game, with the same classic model available as the default body shape. The changes described above add options and refresh the look of the character; they do not remove him.
