Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A PS3 that powers on and then drops off within seconds has not told you which part failed. The same symptom can come from a loose power cable, a dead outlet, or a fault inside the console. Start with the cheap external checks, write down exactly what the console does, and then decide whether a repair makes sense for your specific model.
What the symptom can and cannot tell you
An immediate shutdown after pressing the power button is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The iFixit PlayStation 3 troubleshooting guide treats power problems as a sequence of checks that starts outside the console (iFixit, PlayStation 3 Troubleshooting). Only after those checks pass does it make sense to look at internal causes. Do not open the console or buy parts until the external steps are done.
Step 1: Rule out the power connection
- Unplug the console from the wall, wait a minute, and reseat the AC power cable at both ends. Confirm it clicks or sits fully home in the console’s inlet and is not loose.
- Plug a lamp, phone charger, or other known-working device into the same outlet. If that device does not work either, the problem is the outlet or its switch, not the PS3.
- If you have a second outlet or a different known-good cable, swap one at a time and repeat the power-on test after each change.
The iFixit guide specifically recommends verifying that the power cable is properly plugged in and not loose, and that the outlet functions. These are low-risk checks, and they resolve a meaningful share of “turns on then dies” reports, although no source establishes a percentage for this symptom.
Step 2: Record exactly what the console does
Before you change anything else, note the following each time you press the power button. Write it down; a precise record is far more useful to a repair shop or to Sony support than a description like “it turns on and dies.”

- Model number. Find the CECH model number on the label on the console’s underside, and note whether it is a launch-era, slim, or super slim unit.
- Indicator light. Whether you see a brief green light, a yellow flash, a blinking red light, or no light at all.
- Beeps. Whether there are any beeps, and how many.
- Fan. Whether the fan spins up at all, and whether it runs briefly before the shutdown.
- Power after unplugging. Whether the console powers on again after a full unplug and rest, and how long it stays on.
Sony’s Japanese support pages explain how the power indicator lights are meant to behave for the PS3 (Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan, PS3 power indicator light statuses). The page is useful for checking the meaning of each light, but the available text does not provide a complete chart covering every model and every combination. Match what you observed against the page, and treat a clear match as a lead rather than a verdict.
What the fan and light clues suggest
The iFixit general troubleshooting material associates a brief fan start followed by shutdown with a motherboard-side problem, and no fan start with a likely power-supply issue. That is third-party diagnostic guidance, not an official Sony error code, so use it to decide where to look next rather than as a conclusion.

Yellow light of death: a related but separate question
If your console shows a yellow light, it is tempting to assume the Yellow Light of Death (YLOD). The iFixit YLOD fix guide describes YLOD as a generic hardware-error description with several possible thermal and board-level causes, not a single failed part (iFixit, PlayStation 3 Yellow Light of Death (YLOD) Fix Guide). Do not treat a yellow light as proof of overheating or of any particular component failure.
For the same reason, do not reflow the board, replace thermal paste, swap the power supply, or replace capacitors because a forum post or video suggested it. Those steps may be relevant for some consoles, but none of the sources establish that they will fix a PS3 that shuts off right after startup. Diagnose first.

Decide between repair and replacement
If the external checks pass and the console still shuts down, you have two realistic routes: pursue a diagnosis and repair, or compare that cost and risk against buying a replacement. Compare the options on these axes:
- Exact model and fault evidence. A repair quote is only meaningful when it is based on your model number and your recorded light, beep, and fan behavior.
- Saved data. Decide whether you need to recover saves or content from the console, and whether that recovery is possible if the console will not stay on.
- Repair quote and warranty. Ask what the quote covers, what it does not cover, and what warranty applies to the repair.
- Parts availability. Confirm that model-compatible parts are available for your specific revision before paying for a repair.
- Regional support. Sony’s Japanese support pages note that after-service acceptance has ended for some PS3 products. Check the PlayStation support page for your region and model before you commit to any service route (Sony Computer Entertainment, PS3 Support).
The sources reviewed here do not publish current repair prices, replacement-console prices, or a universal cost threshold, so any dollar-based decision point has to come from your own quotes and local prices.

What not to do
Do not run the system restore or default-settings procedures to fix a console that will not stay on. Sony’s restore guidance warns that these system operations can affect data and should not be interrupted, and a console that shuts off during startup is exactly the situation where an interrupted operation becomes a risk (Sony, Restore Default Settings).

A replacement AC power cord is a reasonable purchase only if the existing cord is visibly damaged, has a loose connector, or is physically unsuitable for your console. The iFixit guide recommends checking the cable connection, but it does not establish one cord that works with every PS3 model, so match the cord to your console’s revision and power inlet before buying.
