Most failed villager breeding comes down to two things: the adults are not yet willing, or the baby has no valid bed. Food makes villagers willing, but food alone does not guarantee a birth. The baby also needs a bed with clear space above it, and the rules differ between Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, so check your edition and game version before changing your design.
What a successful birth needs
A villager birth depends on three conditions being met at the same time:
- Willing adults. Both parents must have been fed enough food to become willing.
- A spare valid bed. The baby needs a bed that is not already claimed, with two empty blocks above it.
- Edition-correct conditions. Java and Bedrock apply some of these rules differently, so a guide written for one edition may not match what you see in the other.
Work through these in the order below. Start with the particles, because they tell you which condition is failing.
Step 1: Confirm the adults are willing
Feed each adult villager from its own inventory. The usual baseline is:

- Give each adult 3 bread, or 12 carrots, potatoes, or beetroot.
- Watch the food disappear. Villagers must pick the food up. Food tossed on the ground nearby does not count.
- Wait for hearts. Hearts mean the pair has entered love mode, which is the stage before a baby can appear.
If there are no hearts at all, the problem is willingness, not the bed. Recheck the food in both inventories. In an automatic farm, also confirm that the food route actually delivers food to each villager (see the section on automatic breeders below).
Step 2: Read the particles
The particles tell you where the process stops:
| What you observe | First check | Why |
|---|---|---|
| No hearts | Food in both inventories, and whether the villagers are willing | Villagers must be willing before they can breed. The Minecraft Wiki village mechanics page describes the willingness conditions. |
| Hearts, then angry particles | A spare valid bed and two clear blocks above it | The pair is willing but the birth check fails. This is usually a bed problem. |
| Hearts but no baby in an established village | Beds claimed elsewhere in the village, plus your edition and version | Bed availability and population are counted across the village, and the accounting differs by edition. |
| An automatic breeder stops working | Food pickup, farmer food sharing, and the Java mobGriefing setting |
Villagers that cannot take food from their inventory or the ground cannot stay willing. |
Hearts alone prove only that the pair is in love mode. They do not prove that the birth conditions are satisfied.

Step 3: Verify a spare valid bed
For a simple pair, plan for three beds: one for each adult and one for the baby. Most people only count the beds beside the pair, but the check is broader than that.
Count beds claimed across the village
Beds that are already claimed by other villagers do not count as spare, even if they are nearby. Check the whole village, not just the building you are standing in. If every bed is claimed, a willing pair can still fail to produce a baby.

Clear the headroom
The bed needs two empty blocks above it for the baby. Do not place a ceiling, a slab, or any other block in that clearance. This is the most common cause of hearts followed by angry particles. Check the space above the bed directly, because a lowered ceiling or a hanging block can invalidate a bed that looks correct from the side.
Java only: reachability
In Java Edition, the Minecraft Wiki village mechanics page describes the birth bed as requiring a reachable path for the villager. Do not apply that pathfinding test to Bedrock Edition, where village and bed accounting work differently. If a Java bed looks correct but still fails, check whether the villager can actually walk to it.

Edition and version differences
Many failed breeding attempts come from following instructions written for the other edition. The table below lists the differences the reference material establishes, and marks gaps as not stated.
| Mechanic | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Willingness after trading | Not stated in the Minecraft Wiki village mechanics page reviewed | Villagers may become willing after trading, according to the Minecraft Wiki village mechanics page |
| Bed reachability (pathfinding) for the birth bed | Described on the Minecraft Wiki village mechanics page | Not applicable as described for Java; Bedrock accounting differs |
Food required when mobGriefing is disabled |
Villagers cannot become fully willing without food | Not stated in the reference reviewed |
Version matters too. Mojang’s Java 26.3 release notes describe a minecraft:villager_food component and changes to bed rules and villager bed tags. Mechanics like these can change between releases. If a guide you are following does not match your world, confirm your exact version against the release notes before rebuilding. The release notes do not establish a breeding change for every edition.

Automatic breeders
Automatic villager farms fail for different reasons than hand-built pairs. Check these in order:
- Food route. Confirm that food reaches each villager’s inventory. A hopper or chute that drops food on the floor is not enough if the villager does not pick it up.
- Farmer sharing. Farmers share crops with other villagers in a way that can affect automatic setups. If the food supply depends on farmers, check that the farmer has access to the crops it needs.
- Java
mobGriefing. In Java Edition, villagers cannot become fully willing without food whenmobGriefingis disabled. Check the setting with/gamerule mobGriefingand enable it with/gamerule mobGriefing trueif your farm relies on villagers picking up food. This command requires operator permissions or cheats enabled.
Mojang’s Bedrock farms article gives general context on villager farming, but it does not diagnose breeding failures.
Isolating the failure in a test setup
If the cause is still unclear, build a single pair in an open area with three beds, each with two clear blocks above it. Feed both adults and watch for hearts. If hearts appear and the baby still does not spawn, the problem is in the bed rules, the edition, or the version. If the test works, the problem is in your original village’s bed count, headroom, or food route.
The exact cause cannot be confirmed without knowing your edition, your game version, what the particles look like, and how the setup is built. Those details decide which of the checks above applies.
