Next, compare wireless operation with a wired connection and test another compatible controller or host if available. The cause could be power, pairing, the PC’s Bluetooth or Xbox Wireless Adapter, or a controller or host fault; the checks below help narrow it down without assuming a battery or cable is the fix.
First, identify the connection that failed
Xbox controllers can connect to a console through Xbox Wireless, to a Windows PC through Bluetooth or the Xbox Wireless Adapter, or by USB. These are different connection paths, so a fix for one may not apply to another. Xbox provides separate guidance for Bluetooth troubleshooting and the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows.
- Note whether you’re using a console, Windows PC, or another Bluetooth host.
- Record whether the Xbox button flashes, stays lit, or turns off when the controller loses connection.
- Check whether the problem affects one controller or several, and whether it happens on one host or more than one.
Check the controller’s power
If your controller uses removable AA cells, replace both with fresh matching batteries. If it uses a rechargeable pack, try a known-good, charged pack. Xbox has a battery guidance page; low batteries or a battery-pack problem are possible causes, but replacing the batteries does not guarantee that pairing will return.
Retry pairing on the matching connection path
Xbox console
Use the pairing controls on the console and controller, following the current instructions for your console and controller model. Xbox’s official pages identify the relevant support paths, but button timing and menu labels can vary; consult the current Xbox connection guidance rather than relying on a sequence for a different setup.

Windows PC over Bluetooth
Use the Bluetooth connection path and its current troubleshooting instructions. Don’t treat Bluetooth pairing as interchangeable with Xbox Wireless Adapter setup.
Windows PC with the Xbox Wireless Adapter
Use Xbox’s adapter-specific support guidance. If the controller was originally paired through the adapter, troubleshooting PC Bluetooth alone may not address the problem.

Compare wireless with a wired connection
Connect the controller directly using a known-good, data-capable USB cable that fits its port. A controller that works by USB but not wirelessly points attention toward the wireless pairing or receiver path, but it does not identify a single failed part: the controller, console radio, PC Bluetooth, adapter, interference, or pairing state may still be involved.
If the controller also fails over USB, check the cable and port before concluding the controller is faulty. Confirm the controller’s model and connector before buying a cable: the community-authored iFixit troubleshooting guide notes Micro-USB on older versions and USB-C on Model 1914. It covers specific models and is not a guarantee that every controller uses the same port.

Separate a controller problem from a host problem
If you can, try the affected controller with another compatible host, then try another compatible controller with the original host. These comparisons are diagnostic checks, not official warranty tests.
- If the problem follows one controller across hosts, the controller or its power source becomes a stronger suspect.
- If several controllers fail on the same console or PC, focus on that host’s wireless connection path and its support guidance.
- If wireless fails but USB works, keep investigating the wireless pairing or receiver path rather than treating the wired result as proof of which component failed.
When to escalate
If the controller still won’t reconnect after a power check, the correct pairing path, a wired comparison, and tests with another compatible host or controller, contact Xbox Support or seek repair advice. A Microsoft Community answer dated June 4, 2023 suggests USB connection and a controller software update in its troubleshooting context, but it is user-contributed guidance, not a universal diagnosis. Follow current official instructions for any firmware update; don’t interrupt an update or attempt a recovery procedure unless Xbox confirms it for your controller.
