Steam’s public FAQ does not say why any individual account was restricted, so the reason you need is on your own account. Sign in and read the restriction or ban notice, which is where Steam shows the stated reason, the affected feature, and the duration while the restriction is active.
What a Community Ban is
A Community Ban is a moderation restriction. It is not the same thing as a VAC ban, and it is not a ban issued by a game developer. Steam’s official “Restricted Steam Account” FAQ states: “Community Bans are issued to an account when the account is used in ways that violate Steam’s Community Guidelines excessively.” The word that matters is excessively. Steam is describing a pattern of conduct, not a single slip, and the FAQ does not publish a list of specific posts, reports, or words that trigger one.
Most Community Bans expire. Steam also says a ban can be extended or made permanent when prohibited activity continues or when moderators consider the activity egregious. Steam’s public pages do not give a standard length, so the duration printed on your notice is the only reliable figure.
Why the reason isn’t published
Steam’s general guidance tells you what category of rule applies. It cannot tell you what happened on your account. For that reason, the honest answer to “why did I get this” is the reason written on your restriction notice, and nothing broader. Do not assume the ban was caused by a particular comment, review, report, or game chat unless the notice or a reply from Steam Support names it.

Account-level restrictions are also easy to confuse with one another. Steam’s FAQ separately describes account locks, Community Profile Restrictions, Harassment Bans, Trade Bans, VAC bans, and Game Bans. Each has a different cause and a different route for appeal, so identify the exact label first.
Identify which restriction you have
The table below maps the restriction types Steam’s public pages describe to what they mean and where to go next. Where Steam does not state a detail in public guidance, the cell says so.
Rank #2
| Restriction shown | What Steam says it is | Where to take it |
|---|---|---|
| Community Ban | Issued for excessive violations of the Community Guidelines; most expire, some are extended or permanent | Public FAQ does not state a general appeal route; check the notice and the Steam Support Help Site |
| Steam Discussions ban | A restriction on posting in Steam Discussions | Steam’s Discussion-ban Support form, to request information or appeal |
| Suspicious-content account lock | A lock tied to content flagged as suspicious that you did not post or upvote | Secure the account, linked email, and computer, scan for malware, then contact Steam Support |
| Game Ban | A ban decided by the game developer | Contact the game developer, which owns the decision |
| VAC ban | A ban from Valve Anti-Cheat | Follow Steam’s Support article for VAC bans; not stated in the public Community Ban FAQ |
| Counter-Strike 2 communication penalty | Applied to accounts with a Community Ban; expires when the Community Ban expires | Penalties from in-game reports follow a separate removal process |
Steps to take with a Community Ban notice
- Sign in to the affected Steam account and open the restriction or ban notification. Write down the exact reason text, the feature it restricts, and the stated duration, if any.
- Match the label to the table above. If you are unsure whether the restriction is a Community Ban, a Game Ban, or a VAC ban, do not start an appeal until you know, because each is handled by a different party.
- If the restriction is a Steam Discussions ban, open Steam’s Discussion-ban Support form. Read the linked Community and Content Guidelines first. Keep your request specific and factual, and make it consistent with what the notice says.
- If the notice refers to suspicious content you did not post or upvote, secure the account first. Change the password, check the email address linked to the account, and check the computer for malware with a scanner you already trust. Then contact Steam Support.
- Keep all communication on Steam’s official Support Help Site.
Appealing a Discussions ban
Steam’s Discussion-ban form is the one route the public guidance describes in detail for appeals. It also contains a clear warning. Steam’s form states: “If your behavior was in violation of any of these guidelines, your appeal will be denied.” An appeal is therefore only useful when it accepts what the notice describes and explains the context accurately, rather than arguing that the guidelines do not apply.
Game Bans are not Community Bans
A Game Ban is decided by the game developer, and Steam directs users to that developer for appeals. Contacting Steam Support about a Game Ban will not change the developer’s decision. If your restriction is a Game Ban, the developer’s support channel is the correct route.

Suspicious content and account security
A suspicious-content lock differs from a conduct-based ban. Steam’s guidance here is specific: if the content in question was not yours, the account may have been compromised. Securing the account and the email linked to it comes before anything else, because a compromised account can be used to post content that triggers the restriction again.
Scams that pose as Steam staff
Steam warns that Valve employees will not contact users about their accounts through chat systems. Anyone who claims to be from Valve or Steam Support in a chat and asks for inventory items, a password, or account access is attempting to take the account. Do not share any of those things. Steam Support can be reached through its official Help Site.

What is not established
Steam does not publish the share of Community Bans caused by each type of conduct, a standard ban length, or a general appeal success rate. Any figure you see for these things online is not from Steam’s official pages. If you think a Community Ban was applied in error, the only documented route is the notice, the Discussion-ban form where it applies, and Steam Support.
